Common misconception: Sunstone doesn't make sense. Most people were confused bc Sunstone didn't seem to "include Sapphire," but Steven, Sapphire, and Ruby didn't fuse; Steven and Garnet fused. Since Garnet is such a stable fusion, you don't see a distinct Ruby and Sapphire. You see Garnet. The fusion Sunstone is _Garnet_ and Steven, and together they usually encourage the team, hence Sunstone's mascot-esque persona.

I really want Rebecca Sugar to say that this is canon. I always wanted to se Ruby and Sapphire fuse with another gem. Not like Garnet but like themselves. I mean look at Suggilite. She's a fusion of Garnet and Amethyst. You might say that where is Sapphire??? Thats cause Suggilite isnt a fusion of Ruby, Sapphire and Amethyst. She has 2 main personality factors. 1 from Amethyst and 1 from Garnet. The rest is well..... HER. Fusions arent just combined personalities. Yeah, they do play a major roll in deciding the "Main" personality but they arent 50% Garnet and 50% Amethyst personalities. Suggilite just kind of goes after 20% Garnet and 20% Amethyst. The other 60% is Suggilite herself. (This may depend on the stability of the relationship in fusions). So I kinda want to see Sapphire, Ruby and Amethyst fuse together. I think we would get a completly diffrent Suggilite both in personality and in her looks. And what about Opal and Garnet fusing??? I want to see another version of Alexandrite! And imagine what Obsidian would be if Sardonix and Smokey fused!

Fusion is brilliant. It allows us to see not only the relationship of two characters, but allows them to act in a manner that not only shows the deep connection between the two, but also tells us about the separate Gems. Take Opal for example; She's cool, calm and confident. This tells us that not only are Amethyst and Pearl able to contribute to the fusion's traits, but also that they both have the ability to be more like each other, creating an interesting (albeit somewhat unexplored) consequence of Fusion. One more note about fusion, is that it allows the artists to get creative. They can create crazy, monstrous beings, or serene and calm warriors purely based on a few traits. Needless to say, Steven Universe would not be anywhere near as great as it is without it.

The general misconception of that is due to the imagery and subtext. The Sardonyx arc was near a parallel to sexual assault and manipulation regarding consent. Sub in a few words with sex or r//pe and you have yourself the exact same connotation without it. Also a lot of the dancing can be quite... suggestive. I’m aware that fusion doesn’t inherently represent this, but you cannot blame people who may not watch everything or delve into the cesspool fan base to figure out these things and only pick up on subtext. Also Mr Multiverse/Steg is a monstrosity and I know it’s not incest but it leaves the same bitter taste in my mouth for many reasons.

THIS. I've heard way too many people say that fusions with Pearl look too much like Pearl and indicate that she is mostly in charge and "taming" the other gems..
@matti.84655 жыл бұрын
I always liked that concept but it's false, it just depends on what design the crew likes more. Though i personally like to think that the more people are in a fusion the more "messy" it gets on apearance as there are many personalities that may conflict a little. Though thanks to the off colors we know a big fusion can work just as well as Garnet.
@celestialVocalist5 жыл бұрын
I think this might come from the fact with how Malachite looked so monstrous due to her being a toxic relationship and people maybe assumed that when Fluorite was introduced. Fluorite is a fusion of six Gems and thus looks like a giant caterpillar with extra eyes and arms. But Fluorite is different, she's a stable polyamorous relationship and even though she has many Gem components, she has a form that's pleasing to the eye and friendly to approach.
@rover13595 жыл бұрын
I think the biggest misconception ever is that fusions are just a combination of the two gem's designs, as in like they take some elements from each character's designs. While this is common in more unstable fusions like malachite and human fusions like Smoky or Stevonnie, I believe that fusions also acquire their own personal looks, while still having a little flair from each component, if any of that makes sense.

@Teifling5 жыл бұрын
Now that you mention it, I've been curious about that too. Like, Opals are naturally occurring stones, could there be an Opal Gem who is not a fusion of a Pearl and Amethyst Quartz? What about Malachites? Garnets? Alexandrites?

@PlumBum She then goes on to question where Garnet would go during the ball, though, implying that there aren't any other Garnets because if there were, our Garnet would presumably go with the others.
@oelesp70835 жыл бұрын
Actually, the crewniverse confirmed every fusion gem have a single gem counterpart on Homeworld. There is even a garnet that appeared in canon (specifically in the game Save the Light) : Hessonite, which irl is a type of garnet. And Garnet named herself that way because she saw garnets on Homeworld, and decided thats what she is. Canonically, fusions choose their name themself. On Rebecca Sugar's part, she choose fusion gems based on the relationship between the gems, choosing a gemstone that would fit said relationship's "traits". For example, real-life opals are known to have a pretty high amount of water in them, however, if the opal dry too much, it can break. And fun fact, just holding the stone against your skin is just enough to keep the gem holding together. If we compare that to SU Opal, we can draw quite a few paralels : - Opal is very prone to fall apart (from Amethyst and Pearl arguing) just like real-life opals - Opal often form and manage to hold together when Amethyst and Pearl wants to protect Steven, just like real-life opals can benefit from a human keeping it close to them Random fun fact : real-life malachite becomes toxic in water, but apparently, Rebecca Sugar didn't knew that when designing Malachite

I think it's clear that with the exception of Opal that Pearl's fusions do enjoy talking. Opal doesn't because it takes a lot of effort to balance the strong personalities between Pearl & Amethyst... and that is the case for more complex fusions also. ie alexandrite & obsidian. Fluorite works as a complex fusion because of their long history together, where as other complex fusions have been more short lived.

First thing, this was posted on my Birthday! Neat coincidence, just saying. Second, I am just now getting into Steven Universe. I'm in the third season but it was pretty early that I caught on to fusion representing a relationship without having to be intimate. The first one we saw was between a pair of friends/ battle companions. The Rubies combine to become a better soldier. Jasper and Lapis Lazuli was a special case. I didn't perceive it as a sour relationship but rather a soldier looking for a tactical advantage and a PoW using that option to bring the soldier down and save the people she's recently learned to trust. The end result built into a problematic relationship because it wasn't a gun or chains that Lapis used, it was Jasper's body and mind. That last bit is what makes it so interesting. The fusion is both literal and, depending on the intent, figurative giving it so much meaning and such a powerful mechanical purpose.

In my opinion, the reason why the misconception that fusion is the gem equivalent of sex exists is because (in many but not all cases) sex is a significant aspect of a relationship. It is two people physically coming together, just like fusion. However, fusion is more symbolic than that. It represents the relationship as a whole, something that people tend to overlook.

Dude I lovveee rainbow quartz 2.0- they’re so coollll, and my second favorite is easily sunstone. I also came up with a theory a while ago that Steven himself is technically a fusion. Like, physically. Throughout the series up until the homeworld arc and future despite all the danger he’s in he’s always been a fun loving kid with a lot of compassion. But, when white diamond split him into two halves, they make contact and dance around before becoming one again. Now this is alright evidence until you think of future, where he starts to basically fall apart and his gem powers go haywire. This is because of what we’ve already discussed with fusions fighting against each other. While he is one person and not a fusion mentally, that’s why when he’s split up he feels so awful, physically during future I imagine his emotional turmoil and self loathing granted him the same effect as when a normal fusion would begin to hate itself. His powers go crazy. This makes even more sense when you think about pink diamond. He’s lived the last few years of his life being compared to her, a person he saw as being horrible due to the words and actions of those around him. He hates pink diamond. So he hates his gem half. Anyways at the end of future, when he finally finds peace with himself, his problems go away. I thought of this the Tuesday before last while sitting on the couch watching the homeworld arc lol

On the subject of fusion though, I’m curious as to whether or not you think a fusion using Stevonnie would be possible, as Stevonnie still has the gem component to them, but would the Human portions get in the way of fusing with another Gem/Human as Stevonnie is essentially 75% human. Do you think it’d be possible we get one? (I.e. a Stevonnie/Amethyst fusion, a Stevonnie/Peral fusion, ect)
@animo3585 жыл бұрын
Smokey is actually the main thing that makes me think this is in fact possible. Twice now we've seen Smokey dissapate , but as opposed to almost every other fusion, Steven kinda just...falls out, and Amythst just reforms. I would think Stevonnie can fuse, just not as quickly as say, Obsidean. Yes Steven can fuse with the Gems, but Connie can't, she'd have to fuse with Stevn first in order to even attempt that.
@eaglefan25695 жыл бұрын
Hello, I can help clarify this! In the latest official Steven Universe podcast episode, "The Fantasy of Steven Universe", Rebecca was asked a question regarding if other half-gem hybrids like Steven could exist. Misinterpreting it (at first) as Steven fusions, she went on to explain that, "Steven could pull gems into his human fusions", and went on to say that, as long as Steven was the bridge, gems and organic creatures could fuse. So as long as Steven was fused with the organic being first, a gem could then join in the fusion. So you couldn't get just Connie and Pearl fused, but you *_could_* get Stevonnie and Pearl fused. Same goes with any other gem (and any other potential organic fusion Steven has).

fusions are like metaphors for relationships. i think most ppl saying its a metaphor for sex forget that there are gems that fuse for work and such to be stronger and sex there just doesnt make sense or at least in the ways it used. its just a work relationship instead, a representation of them being acquaintances and their shared goals
@kaijenson79495 жыл бұрын
I was literally just thinking about this! The idea behind fusion is a synchronization of body and mind, the brain wavelengths being the most important. That is why a strong relationship and a dance are recommended for the most effective fusions. But as shown multiple times by Garnet, you don't have to have a dance, and Tiger Jasper shows that you don't even need to like them to fuse. Thank you for doing this video for me! (by the way, love your gemsona. I'm a Blue Quartz myself)

The one thing I'm questioning is why Pearl acted the way she did when covering Steven's eyes as Garnet and Amethyst start to fusion dance, blushing and looking away in embarrassment.
@thelastwindwaker79485 жыл бұрын
And also why she referred to Steven and Connie's fusion as "inappropriate".
@ToonRuinsOfficial5 жыл бұрын
You need to look at the rest of the context for that episode. She wanted Steven to see her as strong. The creation of Sugilite meant that there was a gem on the field stronger than her. Or if you want an easier answer, the dance could be seen as risque. Pearl called Stevonnie inappropriate, because of Homeworld's views on organic lifeforms. At this point in time, she didn't think highly of humans either. She meant it was inappropriate in a sense that a human shouldn't be allowed to partake in fusion with a gem. She'd likely have this thought with any human Steven decided to fuse with, romantic or not.

One of the biggest questions I had was if fusion in this show was kinda like Dragon Ball where the fusion creates its own free thinking individual whilst also being made up multiple individuals, or if the fusion has more than one continuous and has to focus and have the minds think similarly sorta like Combiners from the Transformers series

5:22 I do agree but there two things i want to tell 1. Your right about fusion is intimate but not sexual, but I think there a case where it is. In the episode with the algamate creatures (I forgot the name of those terrifying gems and the name the of the episode), where garnet is being abbsorde into that fusion monster, i think it was supposed to be represented of rape. It hard to explain... But the one who whached that probably knows what I'm talking about. If it something else please tell me because I feel dumb. 2. If gems don't have sexes (witsh they do because they are rocks) how the frick rose did made a baby

Right ok, so idk where to put this, except I want to ask you a question and point something out to you Toon Ruins. Padparadsha (idk how to spell it) is orange or yellow meaning she came from yellow diamond and Garnets sapphire came from Blue diamond. So what if Pad can’t see the future because she is an era two gem, and Garnets Sapphire is also a era two gem. Hear me out here, what if sapphires only get their future vision based on what time period their diamonds focus on the most but almost in reverse. Blue diamond focussed more on the past and how she wished things would go back to normal whereas Yellow diamond doesn’t, and focuses more on the present time and what has just happened meaning yellow or orange sapphires don’t have future vision because yellow diamond doesn’t dwell in the past. Just a thought, and again I didn’t know where to post or put this.

I think it's worth noting that being an allegory doesn't mean to be literally the same. And while fusion clearly isn't always a metaphor for sex, it's not hard to understand why some see it as such in some cases assuming they view sex as the most intimate relation one can have.

I came here because of dissociative identity disorder integration (Anthony Padilla’s video). Many people kept referring to the “fusion” in Steven Universe as something similar to DID integration, so I got curious to how the “fusion” works in Steven Universe. They pretty sure are similar, but there are some distinct differences. This explanation actually made sense.

Just my personal opinion, but I think fusion represents sex the same way sex represents intimacy. In other words, fusion and sex are both expressions of intimacy and love. That being said, fusion does NOT equal sex, although on the surface it might appear that way because of the dancing and whole concept of two becoming one. Dancing has long been used as a metaphor for sex in media and one can't deny the provocativeness of some of the fusion dances. Even so, I think one of the biggest reasons people confuse fusion for sex is because of a misconception that we as a society have of sex equaling love. Even now, although Western society has become much more open about the topic of sex and accepting of casual sex/sex outside of marriage, there is this pervasive belief that sex is the ultimate expression of love and if a partner doesn't wanna have sex then they don't really love you. But that just isn't true. There are plenty of ways to express love outside of sex and there is no "right" way to show love. There are plenty of asexuals and people on the asexual spectrum that still enjoy being in relationships (asexual does not equal aromantic, contrary to popular belief) and maybe even occasional sex but for them it's not the most important thing in a relationship. Asexual people and Gray-A people may never enjoy sex, some may occasionally enjoy sex, some may enjoy sex only by themselves (i.e. masturbation), and some may not enjoy the act itself but take pleasure in "pleasuring" their partner (pun intended). And of course, just like sexuals, they may vary depending on their mood and other circumstances. Even sexual people aren't always in the mood to have sex, and sometimes there are circumstances preventing sex or lowering their libido (such as age, illness, medication, self-esteem, etc.) That doesn't mean they don't still love their partner, or can't be in loving intimate relationships. TL;DR Thanks for explaining that fusion does NOT equal sex, it is an expression of intimacy both platonic and romantic. Just like how sex CAN be an expression of intimacy in romantic relationship, but it doesn't have to be and it certainly isn't the be all end all that society tries to trick us into believing. There are plenty of equally valid ways of expressing intimacy outside of sex, and besides that romantic relationships shouldn't be placed on a pedestal above all other relationships. If you are in a romantic relationship, that's great, but you can also have friendships and familial bonds just as deep, if not deeper, than romantic relationships. If sex is a way for you to express intimacy to your partner, if it helps you to bond and feel closer to them that's fine, but not everybody needs sex to feel intimate with another and there are also other ways to show love and feel close to someone.
@ohcie6285 жыл бұрын
Yeah I know fusion has absolutely nothing to do with sex, but I would liken Garnet and her stability as to being the child of Ruby and Sapphire, like Garnet being her own being and taking traits from Ruby and Sapphire as a child would be their own being but take traits from their parents. I would liken Malachite and her instability to two people who don't get a long very well trying to control one video game character and fighting over it. Great video by the way!
@jayjayjonny50438 ай бұрын
That's cool and all, but if a fusion fuses with non-fusion(s) does the previous fusion affect the new fusion? For example, Garnet and Pearl form Sardonyx. Sardonyx's weapon is a hammer with Garnets "boxing gloves" on each end. If Sapphire and Ruby weren't fused as Garnet, would that change the fusion? As Ruby only has one glove, but forming Garnet gives two.

Also, the less compatible/more unstable a fusion is, the more "monstrous" it will look. In other words, it will have more eyes and limbs. A stable fusion like Garnet is more humanoid, with only one extra eye. Meanwhile Malachite has four eyes, four legs, and two arms. Noting how many extra limbs a fusion has gives a good idea of how stable the relationship is and how well the personalities work with each other. Also, this one is kind of obvious, but typically the more powerful a fusion is the bigger it is.

Awesome video! Also something I would like to put in is how mutated and screwy Malachite looks, because that’s lead me to believe that the healthier and better adjusted the relationship is, the more normal and adjusted the fusion looks.

i would like too ask, how does thinking and talking work, is it like alien x in his first scene where time is irrelevant and they can make decisions in a instant even though they have been talking for 50 years in the mind or is it like the more unified the faster you can think because the crystal gems when they fuse, they have a great understanding of each other so their reaction time is fast but that one scene when garnet nearly split into ruby and sapphire made me think if their instincts couldn't agree if too run or fight so they nearly split and that would explain the pause

The only fusion I was very curious about was Stevonnie because it combines two beings that (at least appear) to have genders, unlike smokey quartz for example which doesn't confuse me as amethyst is not a male or female and that might be transferred, Stevonnie is a combination of two organic beings meaning that while they classify as non binary a technicality would be really what gender they would be biologically, maybe it's just me or it has been explained and I haven't found where it was but that specifically always confused me since two organic organisms that have and conform to gender binarys combining is an odd thought in my head while watching the shows, since I am autistic and my special interest consist of cartoons and anthropology, anatomy and physiology, and related sciences I took great interest in that part of the show.

The dances in fusions are not meant to show the relationship between two gems, the dancing makes fusion easier by synchronizing two or more gems that are trying to fuse, that’s why it’s so important for gems to dance in a similar way, so they can synchronize Gems without close relationships can fuse, they dance in Synchronisation to synchronize their gems, but a close relationship makes it easier for two or more gems to fuse

I think the reason Steven was able to fuse with connie was because his magic spit healed her eye in the juice box episode. Which meant that a part of Steven's magic was with Connie's eye.So that's how they fused and Greg and Rose didn't physically fuse.
@deffdefying48035 жыл бұрын
I mean, Steven is half human half Gem, and as such is the literal bridge between the two species. As Garnet explained to Greg, to fuse with a *full* Gem you need: 1. A gemstone (which neither Greg nor Connie have) 2. A body made purely out of light (again, which the humans don't have) 3. A partner you are willing to trust with that light (they trust Steven deeply, even though they don't have gemstones or light-based bodies). Fusions with Steven can skip 1 and 2 entirely since he is already half human himself. However, since Rose was a full Gem, all 3 steps are needed to fuse with her.

First of all, a lot of what you said was kinda redundant. Garnet IS ruby and sapphire so unless you mean another ruby and sapphire fusing with garnet that’s redundant. Same with every other fusion in that list. Second: I’m pretty sure the limit for a functioning fusion is approximately 5, obsidian is a fusion of 5 gems and she functions normally, fluorite is a fusion of 6 gems and she moves very slowly because of all the gems she is. You can’t get useful information from 2 data points so it’s safe to assume the particular gems involved change the outcome. If the same gem combination that makes fluorite happened to be gems with almost identical personalities it might be possible that they move more quickly because there’s less conflict between the gems, or if a different ruby or pearl caused obsidian to slow down. We can see a fusion of 4 like alexandrite can have difficulty doing anything so the range of “limits” on fusion can be large
