I did Flatbed for 3 years with Systems, Melton and Miller Truck lines, I loved the active aspect but hated the sitting and all the crazy places you have to deliver. Now I deliver trailers that have CT scanners and MRI scanners to hospitals. Make great pay and I’m home daily, for me personally it helps me get home for my national guard drill and I’m making as much for 30-40 hours as I was OTR for 70 hours. Remember the only persons opinion about your life and career is yours! Trucking is not a standard box of options, try some things try different companies until you find the one and you will know when you found the one that works for you! Love the content, amazing personality and work ethic and hope you keep posting but above all find what you enjoy!

Hi Becca. I enjoy your channel very much. I'll share my thoughts for what they're worth. I drove a deck van for Halvor Lines for just over a year. I left because I didn't like living life on the road. The company is top notch from my perspective. Good benefits and the dispatchers I dealt with were great! They do everything through a tablet installed in your truck. They have a flat bed division and I'm sure they would love having you represent them. Halvor Lines is based in Superior WI but they have terminals in other states as well. I think there's one in Indiana that's probably closest to you. They take really good care of their equipment and rotate tractors out every couple of years. I started off with a 2020 when I began in 2022. In January of 2023 I was assigned a brand new Freightliner! It came with a Smart TV already installed and ready to go. The company really cares about their drivers but they also support O/Os if you decide to go that route one day. Maybe check it out. There is one negative that some people dislike but I didn't mind much when I got used to it and that is ALL their trucks have governors that limit them to a maximum of 65mph. 😬. Possible deal breaker? Anyway, good luck and keep trucking.

Hi Becca, take a break and think about things. If you're need money, pull a box van but make it a need to choose. I'm from the UK, so things are set up differently here. I do watch a couple of other truckers' channels. One is now an owner operator and won't get in his truck for less than $2 per mile, which he just makes money on. Another channel he runs about 10 trucks and he is doing anything he can to make a living. Way before you were born, I would leave on a Monday morning with 130 drops on a box van and get home on the Friday and get paid per drop. I would have to work in the garage every weekend to make a living, so it was rough. I did start my own company, but due to difficult times, I went into liquidation and lost my family and home, so I know you're not stupid and think carefully about your next move. Big hugs, I know you'll do what's best. xx❤😅

Remember while at ART you were booking loads and there was a load of a particular company that you were interested in or very interested in hauling, but it looks like they denied you from hauling their load due to ‘not experience enough’ that is the company you need to apply for. (Look no further). All you seek, all you want to haul ( oversized/heavy hauling) they got them. All companies of same caliber work with the same system - if you never hauled their freight or if you don’t have experience hauling the bigger stuff (and they know if you did or not) they will not allow you to haul it. When you get in the industry of specialized freight, you are required to have experience. So, you want to work with companies that have that type of freight (contract) and that you slowly start getting experienced. Plus they will train you. That company you tried to haul for is super solid.

I spent the last 15 years with the same opinion as you do right now, that a child and a family wasn't the right fit for me until recently (after some major life events) that I've come to the realization that I was dead wrong and for all intents and purposes is too late. I got my CDL in 1998 and went straight to covered wagons hauling steel coils. I have pulled some van freight, a little dump trailer coal hauling and a good bit of refer trailer produce and frozen freight. Bought my own truck in 2005 and went back to pulling a covered wagon. Mostly coils and palletized steel with a little machinery. Flatbed / covered wagon freight got scarce during the recession of 2009, so I had a choice to either get a different trailer and move different freight or park the truck (it was paid for) and do something else. At that time my dad had bought a small garage door company and needed help, so I parked the truck in the yard and went to garage doors. The closest thing I have driven to a semi in the last 15 years are the fire engines and tanker at the volunteer Fire Department I've been with starting in 2010. All this to say, Trucking has ups and downs like everything else. As long as the bills get paid, do what you like doing. Maybe you will meet someone that is a driver and have a life running a team truck. Don't stress it.

I enjoy your videos because they are honest but generally upbeat and optimistic. I tease my wife that you and my wife say nearly the exact things in nearly the exact voice when talking to your dogs. You will have a better instinct for your work situation than I can ever have from afar. Your brother seems well intentioned and I am sure that he loves you. I would never say never get involved with family in business because it CAN be beneficial but I would urge strong caution when it comes to being involved in business with family. I come from a good family but even with that, there are so many things that can happen in the business that can spill over and damage family relationships. Before I got into trucking, I was an owner of a barbershop that did very well in an upscale community. I hired some family members early on and the dynamics became very difficult. Some family members that I have done business with, I am still close to, some relationships aren't as good as they could be, and there are a some where we haven't spoken to in 25 years in spite of living in the same metro area. Did I make mistakes? Yeah. Did they make mistakes? Yes, but those relationships will likely never be the same. In regards to potential fits for your trucking. I entered trucking three years ago. I was beginning to have my left hip hurt constantly from all of my years standing behind the barber chair and then the government shut down barbershops. I will miss barbering and my regular friends at the shop but I have been lucky enough to get into trucking and enjoy it very much. I know what you are saying about your love for open-deck. I went straight into open-deck right out of school and I don't have any desire for dry van or reefer. I am not Billy Big Rig, I have only worked with two companies, but their different approaches to trucking has been very interesting, especially as a former business owner. The first company was a smaller company, which in many ways was nice but because of their lack of formality, I am shocked that they haven't had a driver with a road incident that has left them to pay a nuclear verdict. I hope they never do. They were really a plumbing/pipe company posing as a trucking company. I now work with System Transport. I don't travel with a pet so I don't know what their pet policy is. I wouldn't call them a mega-carrier but rather a right-size carrier. Since starting with them, I have been very impressed, especially as a business owner, with their operation on many fronts. They will let drivers go that operate negligently, but you don't want to work with a company that gets slapped with fines, higher insurance rates, or nuclear judgements anyway. Those companies won't be financially sound anyway. They are a tightly run business, but fair. There are roles that different managerial types have which are clearly defined. They communicate well. Most of the people in management seem to know how to communicate boundaries yet, are affable and generally seem to understand how to deal with drivers and people in general. I have driven International, Freightliner and Paccar. All of their company owned trucks are Kenworth/Cummins combos which I believe are the best. All of their equipment is new or newer. They have their own shops with qualified mechanics that are awesome about doing repairs and getting drivers back on the road quickly. I thought that I knew securement well but anyone of any level of experience I think would derive benefit to going through their securement training. They KNOW securement laws and best practices and will help you avoid a legal or a moral crisis should you ever have an incident. They have great 24 hour driver support to help with any trucking problem you may encounter. You never know how the working chemistry between any two people will work but if you ever decide to speak with one of the company recruiters, I recommend to try to get assigned to a driver manager by the name of Cody Walling, he's awesome and as you know, that driver-manager relationship needs to be a good one. Even if you can't get assigned to him, I am sure they have many of the managers that are good. System has awesome IT through a driver portal to track your pay, documents, trips, instructional documents and videos, etc., etc.. Because of their professionalism and resources, they have the freight with steady contracts. I have hauled lumber, steel beams, pipe, coils, panels, machines, and many other things. If you like variety, they have it. If you want to do over-dimensional freight, they have it. This is the kind of company that will keep you moving in spite of a freight downturn. Since you would like to eventually get into your own truck, with System Transport as a company driver you will make decent money but the bigger benefit, in my opinion would be the variety of freight, the financial and contractual soundness, and your ability to transition over to independent owner operator moving contracted freight to be the biggest benefit. Last year I moved my family to the midwest with the idea being I could more easily find my way home with regularity, have lower living expenses, and navigate any direction to the hotter freight markets. My truck finally arrived after all of the supply chain disruptions and I am excited to get on the road as soon as my truck has the headache rack installed and my beacon and grill lights are wired, I should be hitting the road Tuesday. Anyway, I spec'd out the truck before I went to work as a company driver for System Transport with the idea that I would try open-deck with Mercer or Landstar. Although those companies are probably solid, while working at System Transport as a company driver, I heard many good things about them from the independent owners that were leasing their trucks on under their authority for many years. They could easily sign on with other companies under their authority but have chosen to stay with System. I didn't know how System would react when I approached them about going independent but they have been very encouraging and have made the transition painless. In all honesty, I have only hauled one load with them thus far as an independent with equipment that I bought outside of their normal channels but I know that the dispatcher is anxious to see me on the road so that they can service their customers that they have contracts with. Just to be clear, the person that I primarily deal with is not pushing to force dispatch me, I haven't been pressured from him. He clearly seems to understand the difference of how to deal with independent contractors. The only pressure I need are my bills. Being a lone wolf and dealing with brokers in this economy seems to be more risk than I am willing to take on at this time, so I needed a good partner, especially since I am new to the independent side and I would give System Transport my full endorsement, for whatever that is worth...,. Sorry about the long novel but maybe something in there can help you make a decision when you are evaluating your various opportunities. With your experience, I doubt you will have any problem finding work even as bad as the freight market is. It's just a matter of finding the right opportunity for you.I Good luck Becca travel safe and keep making those videos.

Good luck with whatever you decide. Any company will benefit from having you as well as you from them. We always have freight to get out Nebraska, sometimes its getting the loads to get back that suck. I can think of at least 5 to 6 major companies that the boss has contracts with and thats just counting manufacturers. There are some construction companies that have gone to using only us or mainly us for a lot of their inbound loads for some major construction sites. Definitely makes it easier when you have contract freight vs just running load boards. The load borads were originally only ment to give us back hauls, not live off of.
