What do you think of Charlie Kaufman's latest film? Do you think that it lives up to the films that he wrote but didn't direct? What do you think of his other two films, Synecdoche New York and Anomalisa? Let me know down in the comments!
I'll be joining ‪@MarkAfterDark‬ live later tonight (Sept 13 2020) to discuss the film further!
Also, isn't it funny that the two leads have the same first name? Jessie and Jesse. Really makes you think...

Very simply one of the worst movies ever made. Anyone who pretends to have enjoyed watching this movie, and believe me we both know you're pretending, has what is referred to as bad taste. There is a big difference between having no taste and having bad taste, the latter being a far worse crime. Someone with no taste might really love a band like Nickelback; this person doesn't know their ass from a hole in the ground, but they couldn't care less, they're a moron, they know it, they don't know why or how, they know nothing about music, Nickelback is their band and they go with it... Now someone with bad taste is for arguments sake equally clueless, however they've garnered from some type of social cues what it is someone with actual taste, a genuinely perceptive individual who has been exposed to and recognized beauty throughout their lifespan, first naturally and then artistically, appreciates. A person with truly bad taste then tries to play the role of someone with actual taste. They mimic a person with taste. And they end up listening to bands like The Arcade Fire and The Black Keys, and post youtube comments about how Im Thinking Of Ending Things was "my favorite movie of 2020."

WTF did you just say??? I'm Thinking Of Ending Things is a great movie. The symbolism is very rich in that film. I know you like to a contrarian but just stop embarrassing yourself. I've seen over 100 films so I think I know more than you. Just get a life okay. People like me and Ralph Sepe know what its like to be a filmmaker. Did I mention I'm making a film? It's about the struggles of gay people. Its based off my personal life. Trust me its gonna be kino. Not like you smooth brains would understand my art. When I'm rich in Hollywood you're gonna regret calling me a beta. I'll be out there meeting all my favorite directors while you all will be lying in bed at home. I'm gonna be famous. Can you all say you will be? I think not. Epalpz will be a world wide name. No I'm not got going to get molested by Hollywood producers. Why would you think that? If anything I'll be the one doing the molesting. Call me Weinstein 2.0 I'm ahead of the film curb. No one can compare to my top notch body. My mom says I'm 10/10. Your bullying isn't getting to me I'm to thick skinned. See you all in Hollywood.

the most depressing part of this film, for me, is the young woman’s recant of the time she briefly saw jake at the bar, where she says she is celebrating her anniversary with her girlfriend. all of jake’s existential sorrow and regret is rooted in a hopeless endeavor, for she never would have been attracted to him anyway. this is also a kaufman tweak to the story of the novel, where this is never said, probably serving to add to the messaging of regret and looking back on ones life, for jake is wasting away as a janitor unable to detach himself from this mystery woman. it’s really heartbreaking stuff
@LongdogBookReviews
@LongdogBookReviews 10 ай бұрын
This part was a little ambiguous to me. She talked about celebrating her anniversary with her girlfriend; and then said "I remember thinking, 'I wish my boyfriend was here'." Did she mean a hypothetical boyfriend (because of the gender dynamic, or whatever)- or was this yet another example of Jake showing that he had no idea who she really was? I wanted to explore this in my own review, but wanted to keep the runtime relatively short. Kinda wish I had included it!

In the beginning, when the female lead's voice is saying "I'm thinking of ending things", that's the janitor's real emotions bleeding into the fantasy. She isn't thinking about ending the relationship, he's thinking about ending his life. That was my read.

NOOOOOOOOO!! You completely misread the film references: Kael's review is a jab at critics (read Antkind), and A Brilliant Mind a jab at Hollywood's representation of a person's inner mind. The character isn't mentally disabled, he just never fullfiled his potential because he never chose a true calling despite many interests. You don't need to have multiple personalities to have a voice telling you how uncapable you are, or how you're never going to get the girl. The entire story is a suicide fantasy, no matter how many "good" things happen, there's always a vision of reality to get you back a depressing state to really "end things"...

This makes so much more sense now. I figured the janitor was Jake but didn't know if it was supposed to be time travel or what the hell was going on. This explanation makes it work so much better and totally makes sense now. I feel kinda dumb that it needed to be explained to me because now the pieces all for together in a way that seems like it should have been obvious.

I’m Thinking of Ending Things is an absolute masterpiece. Kauffman is the only one who could adapt Reid’s novel. It must be the most compassionate exploration into the inner world of solitary despair. A compassion that the subject couldn’t grant himself, yet through the journey we become his companion- from her perspective we are the closeness he so craved yet was deprived. The audience participates in the story, and our own preconceptions and prejudice is revealed to us. Great video essay, as always, Kino.

Great reaction - grateful for the analysis, KC. Coupla points, though. (You've never watched 'Oklahoma' have you?). The dancing doppelgangers is straight outta Okie, where 'Laurey' has an idealised dream of herself and her beau. The skinny, graceful dancers substitute and dance to represent an idealised romance. Later in her dream, her unwanted suitor interrupts the bliss, fighting with and killing her idealised beau - just like the janitor in THIS movie. It's Laurey's unwanted suitor (Jud) who sings 'Lonely Room' in Oklahoma. It's a pathetic song, eliciting sympathy for his loneliness, but ending with menace as he proclaims that he's gonna go out, and get (me) a bride. That song presages his actual confrontation of Laurey and her beau, in which Jud is killed - UNLIKE in this movie. After the credits you DO hear an engine, but it's not the janitor's truck - it's the county snowplow turning up. You can just detect a faint clang as the blade is lowered to start plowing the school car park. The janitor is dead as a dodo, naked as a jaybird, inside his truck, having died of hypothermia after hallucinating (as his brain dies with the cold) the Tulsey Town girl, the pig, the Nobel investiture and his (swan) song in front of everyone in the school hall.

Agree with all of this except for how he, the Janitor, is experiencing the memories. I believe its more akin to a DMT trip one has upon dying. The shot of the car at the end symbolising his coffin, the way the scenes jump and play, the flash of all the memories we see through his mind for the first time. I dont believe its a conscious long fantasy of hiis but rarer a death rattle... one ive experienced on DMT and as far as we know it is as close as you can get to what the brain releases upon death to sate us into acceptance. I believe he's dead in the car and never gets out

I love this movie, this book and this was a beautiful video explaining it! I wish Kaufman would have taken the answer to the question into the movie as well, in the book we learn that the question is "what are you waiting for", but not knowing leads to a scarier movie and better interpretations Thanks for an awesome video!

Great review but I don't think it is the sound of the engine after the credits. Didn't he take the keys when he went into the school? Might be a snowblower or snow plow. Not that narrative progression, logic, or continuity would matter in a film like this one. The mood kind of reminds me of Barton Fink for some reason. Or perhaps trying to be David Lynch a little bit also, without the creepiness. (Although it was slightly creepy at times.) This director is definitely expressing some complex ideas through his film making. He is known for his postmodern slants on genres, poking fun at stereotypes, and cliches. I like his thoughtful, provocative, and sometimes upsetting views of the world. He definitely paints esoteric pictures with film, a true artist. In some ways, this film is a masterpiece. But I also appreciate how it seems unfinished, raw, unpolished, unresolved. If I tried to identify a central theme, in my opinion the film is about tangible profundity of death. Like a dark incantation, it brought demons into my living room. I didn't like the way I felt after I watched this film, I didn't like myself, and I think that's the point. I'd say, take it for what it is, and how it makes you feel. Everything has a reason in life, except for this film.
