The Taxi Driver's Guide The Taxi Driver's Prayer O Great and Powerful Dispatcher May Your Spirit be the compass and headlights Which guide me through the labyrinth of city streets On which I drive day or night And teach me how to treat each fare with dignity And help me to remain still that I may listen with care For each passenger has baggage as I do also Guide me in every call That I may see that the true measure of success Is not the tip at the end But the journey in between Amen Forward At first glance it may appear that taxi driving is a half-hearted attempt at cruising through life; a vocation of last resort. Perhaps. True, many cabbies are hacks, but with your commitment taxi driving can satisfy the intellect and provide insight into the human condition. A taxi driver may appear to be nothing more than a common chauffeur, but he holds the key to a limousine. The best taxi drivers offer discretion, service and a friendly face as they cruise the city maze day after day. Many drive taxi, but few are chosen. To Prepare Probably the easiest step of all is getting hired. Taxi companies always need drivers. Even in times of high unemployment taxi drivers are needed. Again, many are called. You’ll need a “Taxi Driver’s License”. A map of the city. A clipboard. Pens. A float of $30.00 if possible. Know where the liquour and beer stores are. Know where the cheapest cigarettes are. Know where the nightclubs are. Know where the hospitals are. Know where the hairdressers are. Most importantly, know where you are. Before long you will know where everything is and enter into a feeling of oneness with the city you serve. The Taxi You will be assigned a cab. In the beginning you will most likely be assigned a taxi that is less than ideal. You must learn that it is you who earns the fare, not the car. A positive attitude is the ticket. A taxi driver with a negative attitude is never more welcome than the taxi driver with a “junker” and positive demeanor. Believe it to be true. Keeping the interior of your vehicle as clean as possible can go a long way, but assistance with luggage, a hand with groceries and a door opened for your fare can speak volumes. These are the points to ponder as you pull off the taxi lot and onto the streets of your city. The Meter The meter is simply a mechanism that determines the dollar value of the fare. It does not discriminate. At times a given fare will differ from the usual dollar amount of that very same trip on a previous occasion. This is due to variables such as traffic volume and traffic lights. This is acceptable as long as your sincere intention is to transport your fare from A to B by the most direct and expedient route. Taking a scenic route, when not requested, for gain of an extra dollar on the meter, will not only do a disservice to your passenger, but will also prove detrimental to your cause. Always. Driving wildly to save a quarter is equally foolish. Do not live for the meter. Do not die for the meter. Drive with conviction and sincerity and you will always be able to justify the meter reading when you arrive at your destination. The Radio Use the radio as a means of communicating with the dispatcher and other taxis. The proper usage of the microphone is key; do not scream. You will be heard using a normal speaking volume, six inches from the microphone. Address the dispatcher with respect. Avoid winded transmissions. Be succinct. Be pleasant. Respond positively, no matter what call is assigned to you by the dispatcher, be it less than desirable or otherwise. The dispatcher will deliver the calls to the appropriate driver. With his wisdom, he will assign to you no more than you are capable of dealing with. It is your responsibility to be ready for any call given to you. The radio serves as a network, a means to access and offer information, advice for dispatcher and taxi drivers alike. The Fare A fare is a person(s) or thing being transported in the taxi for a fee. Because the fare has requested to be transported and/or delivered, it has been put in your charge to fulfill this need with kindness, dignity and respect. Remember this and you will never go wrong. Though sometimes difficult, do not judge. You are a servant. You are a taxi driver. Driving In time you will come to feel the pulse of the flow in the city streets of the traffic as it circulates through the tributaries which make up the city system. Come into harmony with the flow and the negative-ness of any obstacles will be less likely to cause distress. Free Time Idle time can prove to be fruitful. Read, write a letter or phone a friend. Ponder. Be ready for whatever comes your way. Tips Tips can vary from very gracious to non-existent. If received, accept humbly. If none is offered, accept it as so. You will be looked after as needed. Do not live by the tip. Do not die by the tip. A gesture of kindness should have no price. Donut Shops They are a taxi driver’s oasis and refuge. His harbour, his food, his coffee. In Summation Wise men listen. You will find that peace is found within. Inside you streets are paved with gold. Drive those streets with sincerity, faith and hope. It is then that you will have the power to move mountains, one fare at a time. Peace be with you.

Super late to this, but I recently read the book and re-watched the movie, and I agree with your take. The movie is well crafted, but it's tone is so drastically different. When you watch Fern working at Amazon you think it's a nice job. Same with other jobs Fern had in the movie. They didn't show at all how hard, even damaging, it was, how older people get exploited and underpaid. It's like the film didn't want to upset us. It is beautiful (and it's important to show that there's place for beauty and wonder in nomadic life, of course), but absolutely toothless.

Generally in Polish movies there are many hidden titbits and references to literature or other classic stuff. I haven't got much of a chance to get into movie posters and reading books, thanks to school by forcing us to accept only one correct interpretation, destroying all creativity. And of course, never analyse a poster on lessons, but good luck doing the analysis on exams! This may as well turn into a rant about Polish schools, so I better stop. Great video btw!

If you can get through it. Baudrillard's 'Simulacra and Simulation' is a good way to understand Gilliams' vision. Luckily there is a good summary in Wikipedia. just as well, it's a tough post modernist read.

Thank you for reminding me of Mr Gilliam. What a career. We noticed him first in Monty Python, then a series of very funny movies, then the off the wall masterpieces. I recall watching Time Bandits (1981), Brazil (1985), The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1988), and 12 Monkeys (1995). Now I need to rewatch them, as well as: The Fisher King (1991), Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998), The Brothers Grimm (2005), Tideland (2005), The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009), The Zero Theorem (2013), and The Man Who Killed Don Quixote (2018). I'm going to be busy for awhile.
