I can't follow his explanations very well, but what he said somewhere around 12:20 sounds like he's doing the switching of directions twice when thinking about it and that leads to him thinking stars should rotate the same way.
@fjoell
@fjoell Жыл бұрын
Indeed, a little later I think he says it clearer, he's thinking about the way the rotation for people changes on earth in the northern vs. the southern hemisphere, so he changes the rotation, but then he ALSO wants to change the way the camera points, which leads to switching rotation twice and the same rotation direction. He's not thinking about him being the earth in that example, which keeps rotation the same direction and just the direction in which the camera is pointing being the change for humans why they see different rotations of the stars in northen vs. southern hemisphere. So far he seems like a rather nice guy for a flat earther, I hope somebody explains this to him maybe irl because I think part of the problem here is the online meeting environment. (Maybe this assessment of the person will be disproven later in the video)

I honestly think the root of the problem is he's the type of person who finds it difficult to imagine things from another's perspective. He can't comprehend that when I, as someone in the Southern Hemisphere, looks towards the Equator, the universe as we see it will be moving in opposite directions to him, as he looks towards the equator. To him, we're all on the globe together, so we should all be seeing the same thing... but rather than try and understand stuff like 'frames of reference', he's convinced that it would actually mean the hemispheres are moving in opposite directions - which they aren't - so the Earth is flat and there's a conspiracy to cover it up! ...also some weird stuff Time Cube kinda stuff in there, too 😕

When you look at the center of spin in the Northern versus Southern hemispheres, you are not lookinb the same point. The centers of spin (one above the northern pole and one above the southern pole of the axis) are two different points that you need to look in two opposite directions to see. And because each of the two distincy centers of rotation are opposite each other, the spin appears different.

@Bunny99s
@Bunny99s Жыл бұрын
It's true that an observer on the opposite hemisphere would essentially flip their phone on the head, but at the same time you travelling to the other side which relative to you rotate the other way round. What he should do is but the phone on a larger globe at the north pole and just looking tangentially out. Now move the phone slowly along the surface to the bottom and rotate the phone as you do accordingly so the phone is "standing" on the surface of the globe. When you reach the other side your "relative" rotation axis has switched as well. When you're standing on the equator, the rotation axis is 90 to your local up axis.

4:45 So I think I get what he means here, maybe. And he'd be right too. Unfortunately what he describes is the rotation of the stars in the sky, if you look up while standing on the south pole the stars will "spin" a different direction than if you did the same on the north pole. Which is exactly what we're seeing happening, so I'm not sure why he thinks this is a problem. I haven't continued watching so perhaps I am misunderstanding it completely. Edit: Oh so he's claiming the opposite, that they should both rotate the same way(?) The whole confusion seems to be rooted in that he's forgotten that "left" and "right" change direction. Because our frame of reference is the earth and we're on the south pole, west and east are still the same, but we're looking in the completely opposite way from the north pole, so the rotation of the sky is reversed.

Does he think that east and west are flipped in the southern hemisphere, like how "summer" and "winter" are opposite..?? The easiest way to think of this is: Take *any* spinning object and see what direction each axis is spinning *without changing anything* . Don't bother with what things would look like from the surface etc. Just look at the surface itself. You'll find one axis rotates one way and the other axis rotates the other. (ie: clockwise v anti-clockwise) Or another way: Set a disco ball spinning and follow the path of the lights as though they're stars. At the ceiling they'll be rotating one way, at the floor the other. In any case, it might be easier to envision if you put the disco-ball on its side, so the star rotation is happening "upward" on one side of the room and "downward" on the other. Facing the "north" wall of your room, you'll see an anticlockwise spin (east to west) with stars going *up* on the wall to your right and *down* on the wall to your left. Now turn left. You're facing the "stars going down" wall, with north to your right and south to your left. Turn left again to face the south wall. The "stars going *down* " wall is now on your right, and the "stars going *up* " wall is on your left, thus the rotation is front of you is clockwise.

No I can't see those in the latitude I live in in the Northern Hemisphere. Also I can't for the (slightly oblate spherical) world imagine why a Flat Earther can imagine it to be other wise if the whole of the Southern Hemisphere actually surrounds the Northern Hemisphere then there would be such a thing as Southern Circumpolar stars which are as such because the Earth has an axis which can be likened to a pole. Likewise: anyone circumnavigating Antarctica should take much more time than to do so if Antarctica actually surrounds the Earth: basic geometry dictates this.

He is getting confused with the idea of facing north and south with being in the north or the south in relation to someone else given the spin. He is looking at being at the bottom of the globe and facing towards that pole as north for those people instead of understanding it is still just facing south. And as far as looking up and the rotation being different, yeah, that is due to being on the top or bottom of a sphere. I think this might be more clear if you talk about what someone on the equator sees.
