THE only issue is lack of maintenance and terrible management regarding due diligence pertaining to critical infrastructure! The rest of the conversation is BS. The city has put far more money into ridiculous virtue signalling projects. Let’s just be honest.

You should find someone actually knowledgeable to interview, and someone without an agenda. A city official admitted today that this section of pipe hadn't been inspected in over a decade.

The city asking us to reduce water use for 3-5 weeks when they will use 100x the amount we save in 10 days of stampede is crazy work. Someone needs to revaluate the balance sheet on the city's capital and starting funding areas that desperately need it. Potholes in Calgary are a joke, Major highway's haven't been updated in 50 years and housing is a whole other conversation. The money generated from events like the CALGARY stampede should be reinvested into BASIC essentials for the city.

So the five billion dollar southwest quarter of the ring road was not a major road investment during the past fifty years? This particular pipe technology once common was abandoned in the 80's and Calgary is a leading city for updating this technology before the end of life expectancy and indeed Calgary is a leading city for investing in their water pipeline infrastructure so our of what ignorance is your ranting from. Yes, we need to invest more in our infrastructure including roads but Calgary and the Mayor you want to dish constantly are leaders in doing so if you would just do some basic research (I've just been watching a podcast with an interview with civil engineers on this, so my comments have accredited evidence whereas your barstool comments only have your rear as evidence).

@@johnwang9914 Ok so you watch a podcast and now you’re all knowing, wonderful. Calgary may be a leading city for investment into infrastructure, but at what rate compared to population growth? Canada is welcoming immigrants in at a record pace not seen in previous history, and record development within the cities infrastructure is not following along with it. If you think one ring road 5 billion dollar investment in the past 50 years is enough development you’re apart of the problem. Alberts oil and gas industry funds more of the rest of Canada than it does into our own very underdeveloped province. Given the oil and gas industry generates north of 70 billion dollars annually, how much of that do you really believe is being reinvested into Alberta’s economy? And with that a “quick google search” will show you it’s decreasing year over year.

Except...it does? Limited water supplies would obviously be a crisis for the whole city. I fully agree with you to hold them accountable politically. Hopefully we have enough press left in the city to do the full investigation that is necessary.

Geez, I get that we have to be careful and conservative with a resource when a crisis occurs or when it is adversely affecting more important activities (dry land farming, etc), but did she have to start moralizing? Everything she said was sensical and reasonable before she started pushing this obvious radical conservationist agenda, calling us all ridiculous and irresponsible. Get over yourself professor! I now have serious doubts about the veracity and quality of all of your claims. Maybe the way Calgary's infrastructure has been managed is worse than I thought!

There is no way that a main Transmission line fails without one of two things happening either the City brought on new Pumps and didn't do proper modeling or someone in the Transmission system Slammed (Quickly shut an Isolation valve) or both . The Transmission line has been over Pressurized, if in fact it is broken in 5 more sites. The other question that needs to be asked is why didn't the various PRV's (Pressure Relief Valves) not work? Does a critical transmission main not have a Surge Suppression system? This is a Well constructed, well Bedded line, something is definitely wrong with this picture. How can you ensure that this can never happen again if you don't know why it happened in the first place? This doesn't even touch on the current maintenance program or existing Transmission Modeling not red flagging possible problems prior to this event?

Good to have an informed person's opinion here. It will also have a huge financial impact on a city already, most likely struggling to keep up with expenses.

The city of Cape Coral, FL has a greywater recycling line coming out of every home. Washers and dishwashers are required to be hooked up to them maybe even bathtubs (I can't remember), and sprinkler systems can only use that water. Obviously you have to do that for new neighbourhoods, and Cape Coral is basically only a few decades old. The numerous communities going up around the perimeter of the Calgary could absolutely utilize a system like that. It would need to be winterized somehow which would complicate it. Where there's a will, there's a way.

Agreed. If it can't be done, it shouldn't be. To have it continue, will cause more suffering to the city. THis sounds like a cruel psyop to me.

Worth noting after this event, never fully rely on your government for anything. Water, food availability, electric grid, cash money at ATMs, pharmaceuticals being available, cell phone service, gasoline or diesel. Be as self sufficient as possible cause more issues are likely coming!

It's ironic that Calgary is a noted leader in funding it's water main infrasteucture including the early replacement of this specific pipe technology which was abandoned in the 80's due to higher than expected rupture rates, yet countless accusations of not investing enough in the infrastructure has been made on social media. Yes, we in general need to invest more in our aging infrastructure as well as updating the technology but Calgary was the leader in doing so, what these social media whiners shpuld be considering is that their communities probably isn't even on Calgary's level in maintaining their water pipeline infrastructure.
