Yeah this is what gets people, it's also based on the general sentiment about characters as well. Even if there are as many reps of falco at top levels as kazuya or whoever, Falco is less relevant and generally feels less common to see in bracket or at locals. People forget Vars does this for 3 games from a very analytical perspective compared to direct experience. The series started with League of Legends, where the difference in pick rate can be 10% vs 0.1% in games. Vars obviously won't have the in-depth knowledge of every character, but the fact that he can make a video like this for many characters in 3 games is impressive.
@LarryLurr Жыл бұрын
I agree, it's really impressive that he is able to grind out quality content the way he does on 3 different channels consistently. That being said, don't really see it as an excuse to just get some things flat out wrong like a character usage rate when there are usage rate charts you can search for or even just talk to players about things considering he mentioned talking to Tilde in the video.

@@LarryLurr That's completely fair. I know he occasionally brings in some people with better understanding to help on his videos which would have been good here. Either that or cite his sources. I know the generalization in the title is just to keep the title succinct and uniform, but since characters like Falco and Joker are more common and he has done things like "What happened to..." for Pichu and Ike I think, so there is flexibility there. I'm curious if he's working on these alone or has a team. @legrandliseurtri7495 Жыл бұрын
He's wrong to say no one plays him, but you're wrong to say he's the second most played character in the game. Don't know about online, but for offline tournaments, ROB and Steve are the most played characters in the game by a wide margin. Joker is in the top 15 if I remember right. Edit: I managed to find those stats again. So Joker is actually 8th, a little higher than I remembered. Still far from second. Admittedly, I've realized this list isn't about who is the most played in general, it's about which character makes it to and wins at least one game in either top 64 of a super major, top 32 of a major, top 16 of a b tier or top 8 of a c tier. Still pretty interesting.
@SeriousStriker Жыл бұрын
Going by Eazy Freezie's character percentage placements, Joker is #10. Steve, ROB, Snake and Cloud are notably #1-4.

I agree, this character is outrageously underrated. The recovery is good, the vertical movement is the best, the spike, the side B, the combo game, the moving reflector… actually one of the sets where I’ve seen STEVE get his ass whooped the hardest was against a Falco in japan. It might be a hot take but I firmly believe that Falco is much better than Wolf, who is grossly overrated by everyone while virtually showing no consistency and no results, save two players (Jakal and Ouch).

I do think the titles of Vars’ “Why Everyone/No One Plays” videos sounds pretty click-baity, though he does often (if not every video) clarify that he’s simply referring to the overall popularity (usage-wise) of the character he’s talking about for the general public, not just at top level or even high level, and pointing out why that might be in the context of all characters. Really cool to see that Larry liked and supports Vars’ content even though he disagrees on a lot of his points on Falco - love it when two people can have opposing opinions and still respect each other

Honestly i feel the same way about vars link video where he said links biggest weakness is his mobility mainly his ground and air speed (witch i do agree with) and while he did bring up the fact that link has one of the best fast falls in the game because it increases his fast fall speed by 60% instead on the usual 40% increase that is the only thing he brings up in regards to links movement, not the fact the he can b reverse and wave bouce both arrow or boomerang to mix up his movement while being safe on shield and mix up he approach option, or how he can use his fast fall at different points during his jump or his doible jump to change when he lands, add on to the fact that link at least in my opinion has some of the best shield pressure in the game, I can go on and on about the stuff he missed with link but i wont, all i will say is he focuses way to much on the weakness a fighter has and not enough on the straights that the character has

I agree with a lot of what you said about his video, but I think I agree with him when it comes to midrange. As a Marth player, when I think midrange I'm basically thinking the range of Marth's sword and his burst options, for example, which is too close to either do phantasm safely, or get a good punish with it, phantasm seems best at getting good conversions when it hits at the end of the move. At that midrange I think Falco really does not have many tools to deal with.

His combos don't last as long, so while his combo game can be easy, it's not nearly as good. Falco's combo game is actually very easy, and he literally has like 10 different ways to start his combos.

Falco in my opinion still is threatening at midrange because of the fact that the opponent has to expect side B, meaning that they're prone to shielding, which allows you to run up and get close. Conversely, you can also back off and spam lasers at them to prompt them to approach. He has few answers at midrange, but one of those answers is very strong, especially when coupled with the fact that you can utilize the threat of it to bring the fight back outside of the midrange.
@sauce8277 Жыл бұрын
Yeah buts he’s also light which means the reward of the risk of that Side B when you are fighting good players who can kill you off a single hit makes it not as threatening.
@bluyu Жыл бұрын
@@sauce8277 Then don't side B at the wrong time. Your opponent still has to watch out for it even if you don't use it. That alone creates a little bit of pressure that could help you open up your opponent later on. And the fact that he's light makes it more rewarding for the opponent to shield it, and therefore more obvious an option. That's the point I was originally making. Also, there are certain scenarios where it's safe to use the move. For one, against characters that don't have low-hitting backward OOS options, side B is fairly safe, as the opponent has to drop shield, turn around, and grab, which is not fast enough. Additionally, doing it from the air makes the move safer on shield, and at the lowest altitude, Falco doesn't have hitlag when doing it.
@sauce8277 Жыл бұрын
@@bluyu You are misunderstanding. Being light does exactly the opposite. It lessens the pressure your side B has because it does not matter how good you play, you are always limited by your character. If you have one of the lightest characters in the game, every advancing move has less pressure then any other character because you don’t have percent to play around with. You are literally limited by math. The opponent known they can get hit by TWO side B’strings. They don’t care because because it only takes them blocking ONE from you. That’s the gist of it. This escalates and becomes worse and worse with pro players. You just think this pressure is legitimate because you play WiFi where it’s harder for people to actually delete your stocks from a wiff punish let alone a professional.
@bluyu Жыл бұрын
@@sauce8277 Ok first, I never said being light increases the pressure of the move. Literally when did I say that? I said it makes counterplay against it more obvious. Also (here's some math for you too), there are some scenarios where you simply cannot punish the move in certain positions due to the nature and frame data of the move (varies from character to character), which changes depending on whether you do it on the ground or in the air. And another thing: who in their right mind uses that move when they're at kill % anyways? It seems as if you're treating it like Falco will die if he uses the move at any time. If he's at a low %, it's well worth the risk as an approaching option, since if the opponent punishes you, it either has to be a true combo or the character has to have disjoints for it to mean much, since Falco can frame 3 nair out of strings and reversal you. And guess what? Most characters with strong disjoints have weak combo games that are even weaker when it comes to OOS. Phantasm is mainly good for calling out landings or whiffed moves. If your idea of using it in neutral involves doing it cross-stage at an actionable opponent on the ground, then you're thinking outside of the practical scope of the move. You're not supposed to use it as a kill confirm unless the opponent has a very slow airdodge/jump or you're doing it from offstage as a reversal (such as a ledge slip Phantasm). This means you're mainly going to be using it earlier during the stock/game, which is all that matters, since Falco doesn't really need to approach anymore once he has a lead. The risk/reward of the move at lower %s is: deal 80% or kill/take some damage. The only characters that can reliably kill you at low %s OOS are like Steve and Kazuya, and Falco already does well in those MUs without Phantasm. And no, I do not play WiFi, because WiFi is a sham. The only time I play WiFi is when I am playing with friends in arenas with good connection. Otherwise, I strictly play offline.
@sauce8277 Жыл бұрын
@@bluyu Point simply, I disagree with you and you have to accept that. You being carried by a top tier air dodge and people who cant punish you enough to swing the risk/reward and most importantly swing it to the CORRECT level, doesn’t prove your point. Falco doesn’t have some undiscovered rock solid neutral. He is a disgustingly light character with a terrible recovery. And if you played against actual good players, they would enlighten you about the risk reward very quickly. Later bro. Last message here
