Sure someone might've commented on this before, but I think I can explain why CPS2 boards suicide: The battery powers a little chip that holds a set of keys on the A board, and these are needed by the B board to check and give the okay to run. Think of it from Ghostbusters: board A is the Keyholder, board B is the Gatekeeper. After an hour past battery death, those keys are lost forever and renders the A board worthless.
@benjib2691
@benjib2691 9 ай бұрын
It's almost the correct explanation. If I remember correctly the ROM chips inside the B boards are encrypted. The decryption keys (also in the B board) are stored inside a special memory chip powered by the battery. When the battery dies, after a certain amount of time (usually between half an hour and an hour), the keys are erased from memory, and the system can't decrypt the ROMs anymore, hence the game doesn't boot. The A board is fine but the B board is dead. To revive the B board you can either : - Replace all the encrypted ROMs by their already decrypted variant. The system can then boot fine without the keys (as the content is already decrypted). - Program a specific PIC with a universal decryption key and solder it to the B board at a specific location. This enable the B board to work again and keep the original ROMs intact. - Install a Darksoft in place of the original ROM chips. The Darksoft is a FPGA-powered device similar to an everdrive (flash cartridge) for consoles, but for the CPS-2 hardware. It enables ROM files loading from an SD Card, thus you can play any CPS-2 game from a single B board.

Thanks for a nice video. I just replaced 8 batteries from my cps b-boards today. Just one tiny detail: phoenixing IS reprogramming the eproms. So you have only two options, not three: either replace the battery every 5 years or remove the battery and reprogram the eproms (="phoenixing"). If your battery dies, you have no way of "preserving the authenticity" and can't bring the "capcom original" pcb back to life. If your battery dies, you have to reprogram the board with hacked roms.

Nice video! It worths mention nowadays you don`t need to phoenix a B board as, just in 2017, a method was developed to truly revive B boards, without the need to change the EPROMs. Of course, this method was developed after the release of this video, so there is no one to blame. Also this shows how CAPCOM nailed hardware engeneeringwise while developing the masterpeace CPS-2 is. If where not for that Street Fighter Alpha release for CPS Charger, we would manage to emulate those CPS-2 games only after 2017

Thanks for this video! I happen to have an A board with a broken pin and was wondering if you knew anywhere that has a pinout for the connectors at the top of the board? I've heard people say you can try using B boards with no risk of damage but I just want to be careful. Thanks!

CPS2* meant to type. The only type of board I don't own is that all in one black board, which like you said, go for some silly prices at times. I could be wrong, but from what I know it's quite a bit more difficult to have those phoenixed. I don't think Raz does those, but there is a guy on the neo forums who had done a few of them in the past.

Great tip about the A and B boards having to be firmly pressed together, I had this issue with an Asia region motherboard not too long ago, since I didn't have an extra set of clips to hold them more tightly together, but like you mentioned in your comment, it ended up just being an issue where I didn't have the two boards pushed down firmly enough on all 4 corners.

When the suicide battery dies back in the day before anyone was able to have the encryption ram data cracked, you send the b board to Capcom to replace the battery and restore the encryption ram data for a fee.

Do you know if there is any gameplay difference between a phoenixed board and an original? I'm much more into Neo Geo, so I have heard about gameplay speed differing between the two, but trying to find out more about this battery/phoenix bit because my wife wants a dedicated Puzzle Fighter cabinet that isn't just using a PC with MAME on it. Has anyone changed the battery setup on these so that it can use a button cell battery so that every battery change won't require de-soldering and soldering every time?
@moomert1
@moomert1 5 жыл бұрын
As far as gameplay speed, not that I know of. There have been many advances in resurrecting cps2 boards since the hey day of phoenixing a board. If you really want the best option, I suggest the darksoft cps2 kit. I have some videos on it. No battery required. It's not emulation. It's the real deal using the real hardware. It is pricey but it's well worth it.

Don't have any cps1 harness for a video. Since you plan to go back and forth between cps1 and cps2, I suggest just connecting both harnesses to the buttons. Then just connect the correct harness to which ever board you intend to play.

Hi dude, very old video, but still, I hope you can see this message and give me some clue. :) A friend of mine just started collecting arcade boards, and he begun with a couple of CPS2 kits. He got nice looking sets, with the B boards of course, and also all kinds of paper material, stickers and whatnot. That said, he realized that only one game game with the A board as well, so his question - which I ask here on his behalf - is: are arcade CPS2 kits supposed to come with both A and B boards, or the actual games only provide the latter? It's mainly for collecting purposes, since he can actually run both games with his current setup. Thanks alot M, take care!

Great, thanks man. Yeah, that was clear. He only wanted to know whether or not a CPS 2 set come with the B board only, because he's also a collector, so - in case - he would've bought a loose A board for the game he got and that didn't come with it, just to complete it. Thanks again! ^_-

The hyperspin community is basically pay only, the registration at KLOV is like passing a DOD background check, mame has devolved into a terabyte database of useless information. You know the fat Billy-Mitchell-Suck-Up Kid in King of Kong? That's how I picture the entire arcade community. Maybe I'm just too pissed off at hyperspin right now to be objective though
