Just as you asked, I used to be a tyre fitter. We would use the rim sealant on the rim only, and usually a tire lube on the tyre. Only to help it get on, or runflats (which are a bastartd) or tight cheaper tyres etc. That said we did also use the sealant on the valve seals. I did help in the long run as most people think they should get a million miles from a tyre.and this usually helped a bit when ally corrosion started to occur.

@peterjordan7324 Жыл бұрын
Matt you are 100 per cent correct about the valve stem ,a motorcycle has a short valve stem because of the forces put on it when the wheel is in motion. That is why you should never fit a car valve stem to a motorcycle because they are longer and the g force can bend the valve over causing it to leak air or worst case scenario break of like that one did.

The amount of cheap copies of Pacific valves is too damn high over here, rubber tears easily during installation or simply deteriorates way too quickly rather than lasting years. And yeah, the H2 valves are a popular replacement over here, "If it's good enough for 300km/h, it's good enough for my commuter" :D EDIT: The H2 valve has a blue compound, not on the valve thread, but pre-applied on the nut. Kawasaki probably knows someone will not follow the proper procedures 😅
@TheMotospot26 Жыл бұрын
I used to fit truck tyres, never used bead sealer, ever! If I remember correctly we were told not to use it because it can degrade the rubber, but never needed to either, if the tyre wouldn’t inflate or struggled to seal then the rim is usually ducked! He also is being way to greedy with his tyre levers which is why he’s struggling so much.

Love how he has totally ignored the real diagnostic part of a leaky tyre. The oldest trick in the book - soapy water in a spray bottle. Wherever air is escaping it will bubble up. Usual culprits - dodgy rope plug repairs instead of of an internal mushroom plug. Split valve stems are a good one. And there's always the bead leaking from years of rubber buildup on the rim from tyre changes - that's why he was (poorly) using the wire wheel on the rim. And then there's plain old corrosion buildup on the bead causing it to leak.

Those repairs on those roads are dangerous. Was in Florida on holiday a few years back and the roads had those repairs on them, one of the repairs was in the same direction as I was traveling, it had bubbled up so much that the car fell off the edge of the repair and jumped to the side, nearly shit myself. The roads are concreate sections and for some reason they use tarmac to fill in damaged parts, the heat makes the tarmac expand but the concreate does not expand so the tarmac turns into bumps.

BTW, you can change your valve stem with the tire and wheel still on the bike. Use wood 2x4's and clamps. (I used large high quality slip-clamps). Squeeze the tire enough to get your fingers inside, (it’ll pop off the bead). Don’t drop any bits into the tire. I’ve used this method twice. It’s surprisingly easy to do. NOTE: I used a 90 degree brass stem of the type where you push it in from the back and the nut is outside the wheel. I also used a standard rubber stem for another wheel. Both go in from the back, or inside, or whatever you call it. 🍻

We call those repairs on roads “tar snakes” here in the US, and since no state here seems to care about real, actual road maintenance these days, that’s what passes for road repair. They can be smooth, but it really depends on how badly they were laid down by whatever underpaid, overworked road crew was working that day. Those things can also be really slick when it gets wet.

Basic plastic caps weigh 1 gram, the Michelin ones weigh 4 grams. You've get centripetal forces at high speed as well as air turbulence and drag. Is a 3 gram increase too much?

one of the top fails on bike mots is damaged tyre valves, due to sudden air loss in tyre it can cause accidents and has killed riders in the past. If I find heavy valve caps I remove them during mots put a standard one on check valve and tell customer not to use them. Why would you use bead seal on a bridgeport type valve(angle valve) come with own seal O-ring that just needs a little oil or soap on, if you have cleaned up the wheel why would you use bead seal again this product is only for bad wheels rough wheels when they leak between tyre and rim. Race bike tyre fitters use hairspray to prevent tyre loosing grip on track from using tyre soap. Any good bike fitter knows to always replace the tyre valve when fitting a new tyre. On the guy in USA he should have checked the valve when he checked the tyre pressures he might have noticed it was on its way out, good job it wasn't the front.

We have had tyres going down at high speed simply due to shitty valve alloy caps which have no rubber O ring inside them. One of the magazine readers fitted some freebie valve caps (free with another magazine) to their bike and after a couple of 2 mile top speed runs the tyre had gone down too much to be ridden safely. Luckily we had a small compressor and stole valve caps off the photographers car to carry on the photo shoot. But even a cheap shitty valve cap can be a problem. I like the 90 degree valves but like you, I would rather fit quality ones and not just the cheap ones from evilBay or Busters etc.. Get good ones and DON'T put that sealant shit on them.. I have gone through a LOT of tyres over the years and never ever seen sealant crap used. Yes I have seen tyre soap used even with race bikes but never that shitty sealant stuff.
