I know I'm a bit late chiming in on this one. I just discovered this channel yesterday, and I've been going back and watching your other videos. I just wanted to mention that the grindhouses of 42nd Street in NYC provide a direct connection even to actual hardcore and the exploitation elements of 70s and 80s horror. There's a great documentary called 42nd Street Memories(available at the moment on Tubi and my favorite streaming service, Night Flight Plus) where you can hear some of our great horror filmmakers like Joe Dante, Lloyd Kaufman, Frank Henenlotter, and Larry Cohen recount stories of going to those notorious grindhouses in their youth to watch horror movies all day. That environment clearly inspired some of the work of these guys. That's evident in movies like Basket Case, for example.

It's a nice theory but I think Hitchcock's Psycho and Blood Feast where the catalyst for the horror and slasher movies to come. It wasn't until Halloween 1978 was released that put horror movies on the map, now every studio wanted their own slasher films with Friday the 13th sequels adding more gore, sex and kills. Good video for discussing things like this.

I think we are kinda talking about different things...I am not saying that sexploitation was the only thing that created horror, or specifically the slasher genre BUT it has arguably way more to do with the horror movies of the late 70s and 80s than Psycho...Psycho could barely show anything - exploitation films showed everything and drew audiences and were subversive and horror filmmakers capatialized on that...exploitation movies influenced horror movies and helped give rise to having that in the iconic horror movies from the 70s and 80s, Carpenter is great but he didn't invent horror or the idea of having lots of sex in it - he saw the success, the appeal, and viceral nature of exploitatiilon and sexploitatuon films and added those elements into his horror and others began doing it more and more, something Hitchcock couldn't overtly do...

I think you're right it was Red Dawn with the first PG-13. Of course it's well know that Gremlins and The Temple Of Doom spawned the PG-13 rating. There was a lot of pressure for Steven Spielberg to make more kiddy friendly movies and he's was never the same after that. Good PG-13 movies..... One I always think of is The Gate (1987). But in general for me anyway PG-13 is tough to nail. It's either playing it safe or it's just mediocre altogether. Interesting video, thanks.

hey thanks so much! I know there are influences to horror everywhere but I think it is pretty easy to see the exploitation movies' influence on 70s and 80s horror - and it is part of the reason we all love it lol
