The Basilica of San Clemente is one of my favorite sites in Rome. The catacombs are also fascinating. Thanks for posting! Your videos are quickly moving from fame into legend. Any plans to sell a boxed DVD set or compilation of your videos?

Yes, that's the eerie part of Italy, since this stuff is pretty much present all along the country, from North to South, even if they're not famous touristic places at all, for a reason.

I've been in search of the attributed Caravaggio for several years. I was told that it was in the convent. Thanks for this new information, Elyssa.
@Romewise2 ай бұрын
It's not 100% sure that this one is by him but at the museum, they say it is, which is why I say it's attributed to him. There is another similar painting also attributed to him in the Palazzo Barberini art museum.

The Let’s Go I used in the ‘90’s was all over the Capuchin Crypt as a macabre must-see. 😊 San Clemente is a fascinating place. I’ve visited it multiple times and always recommend it. You need reservations these days but their web site is easy to navigate.
@Romewise2 ай бұрын
Yes the Capuchin Crypt can seem creepy to some but as I mentioned, I found it fascinating and moving. San Clemente is really special and I highly recommend it - for this video, we had a tour and so our tickets were already bought for us, but it was not crowded and I think you can purchase tickets on the spot.

Thanks Peter! Yes this tour will be available. It's a private tour so you just have to request it. But they also do other types of catacombs tours so you can check their various offerings. Enjoy!

We visited the Capuchin Crypt (and museum) the same week as you. Although I describe it as one of the most disturbing sights I've seen, it is unique, fascinating, and not frightening. I recommend it, though it won't compete with the Colosseum/Pantheon/Sistine Chapel for "must see", and it might not appeal to everyone. Thanks for this and all your videos.
@Romewise2 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching. Yes, it's all of those things. I have seen it numerous times and I always find it both disturbing and fascinating. But you're also right, it's not going to be at the top of anyone's "must-see" list. I do think it's an interesting thing to do if you're in the area, if you have kids interested in this type of thing, or if you've been to Rome before and have time to see new things.

Great video! Are any of these wheelchair accessible?
@Romewise2 ай бұрын
Unfortunately it's very difficult if not impossible to visit many sites like these in Rome. Often you have to descend a narrow and steep staircase to reach them. Luckily, the Capuchin Crypt is wheelchair accessible. The Basilica of San Clemente is only accessible on the main level but not the 2 underground levels we visited. The Catacombs of Domitilla are mostly not accessible to those in a wheelchair. This page on the Appia Antica website talks about the different levels of accessibility of their sites. It's only available in Italian but you can use Google translate. Accessibile means it's accessible and Inaccessibile means it's not accessible. www.parcoappiaantica.it/visitare-il-parco/accessibilita/ Thank you for watching and for your kind comments!

I made it to the Capuchin Crypt at 6:25 PM - 5 minutes before they closed. When I asked if I could go in, the guy at the door said, "You can go, but you'll have to run. You should come back tomorrow." Of course, we had other things planned, so I didn't get to go back. Next time, it'll be at the top of my list.

Awww too bad you missed it but I am sure you will be back! You don't need more than an hour but I agree, 5 minutes would have been a bit too short!

@@MacBjorn Hmmm, sorry, but I can't find the name you mean. In this video, I mostly talked about the museum and the crypts as opposed to the convent itself but they are all part of the same complex. I'm curious to know which name of which building is on Google maps as being outside Rome.

This is a good presentation. (6 out of 10) I expected a few mor details. For examples a talk related to the marvelous fresco at the start of the video. Mithreum.....? Please explain......Capuchin crypt visit......Faaaaaar tooooo sharp and short!!!!!! Thirty years ago we took the children 4, 5, 6, to the catacomb. They were fascinated not a toll scared. Kevin the five year old decided to take one of the mummy back home to NZ since will make an excellent scarecrows!!!!!!
@Romewise2 ай бұрын
Thank you for your constructive comments. I'm not sure which fresco you refer to unless you mean the one at the start of the catacombs chapter. I'm glad to know you'd like more details about these things, and will work to do so in future videos. It's always a fine balance between trying to make a video that people don't click away from but that also is entertaining and informative. I appreciate your taking the time to give me such helpful suggestions.
