British Muslim Adil Ray visits Turkey, where the role of Islam in everyday life and politics is the most pressing issue.
From a pro-alcohol protest in Istanbul to an Islamic wild boar hunt in the forests, Adil encounters an unfamiliar strand of secular Islam that has a long tradition in Turkey. Yet a more conservative Islam, centred in the country's Asian heartland, is now coming to the fore through the current AKP government, and the country is in a state of flux. Public protests, allegations of coup plots and court cases around the right to wear headscarves lead to fears for Turkey's future.

I'm a secularist, but not allowing women to wear headscarves inside the universities is ridiculous and intolerant. Freedom for all. There should be no rule that tells women to either wear or not wear headscarves. It's about personal choice.

When pious muslims prove capable (again) to value human reason things will definitely change. But till then a benign form of authoritarianism (keeping as much as possible from liberal democracies) is definitely the best solution for the muslim world. It seems to me that the army in Turkey is such a benign factor; the recent changes are by no means reassuring, it may seem paradoxically but reducing the powers of the army may lead to a return to the (re)islamization of the country.

@Skrufmeister02 I completely agree with you. The very reason the world admires Turkey is because despite having almost 98% of the population as Muslim, it is secular and welcoming of people across religions and ethnicity.

The women with headscarfs dont say that they get other people to take their exams for them in university because the headscarf renders them less recognisable...

Why did Adil Ray not visit an Alevi lodge and interview these people on the attacks they survived by the conservatives? It is a democracy that is desired, well, we need dissimilarity in the public to really see a democracy is setting. You cannot be both democratic and not recognize different beliefs under Islam, not fund other sects' religious institutions and practices. A very limited view presented here, indeed.

Those religious people in Turkey are not ethnic Turks, they are minorities from other part from Turkey, ex. eastern Turkey and central Turkey.

i find it hard to believe that turkey is too secular compared to its past, its a shame how an old islamic nation forbids the use of hijab in a public building, even america allows such stuff!!!

Id rather not submit to the authority of an Imam. That's really what's happening under Islamic governance. Not only must the rules of the Quran be observed, but one is also at the mercy of his local imam and sharia dictatorial court. Its basically the opposite of a democracy. So however the ruling imam or Islamic dictator views the Quran, that's really going to be the rule of law. And they can spin the Quran however they wish. You can believe the Quran says one thing, but that's not going to fly
