You definitely could do with a fixed solar setup. I've had a 160W Kings fixed solar panel on top of my RTT connected to a 100Ah lithium battery via a 20A MPPT solar controller. I've had this setup for approx 4 yrs now on my 4WD (only replacing the 115Ah AGM with Lithium last year). This setup is powering my 75L Dual Zone Fridge/Freezer, various LED camp lights, and phones, tablet & laptop charging etc. The longest I've had the car sitting at the one spot without having to start the engine was 3 days (all sunny days), and never once did it go flat. On a good sunny day, with this setup, by around 12pm-1pm, the battery is fully charged again. Mt Meharry peak is on the bucket list when I get to WA. Gorgeous scenery. Definitely worth the bumpy ride up.👍👍

Beautiful guys, lov to watch a sunrise/sunset from maharry peak, maybe get a fixed solar panel or yes leave one of your fridges at home or 2nd battery one day 👍👍👍
@explorebound2 жыл бұрын
Fixed solar would definitely be a great addition down the track! We're thinking we'd probably leave the dedicated freezer home next time, it was nice to have but not necessary. 🙂

hey mate, great video. I have a new xterrain and had issues with cranking battery draining over time. I DIY'd my system and long story short the bcdc blue wire that tells smart alternators the car is running I connected to a always on feed by mistake. I used the add a circuit fuse splicer from under the dash called (ACC) but that turned out that's always on so you drain crank even when the car is off. Swapping that to the radio circuit solved my problem. Maybe something to check. Also the cranking battery is a tiny joke, I plan to upgrade to itech lith cranking with victron isolator at 12.7v. This will add 45ah or so to your setup and reduce weight
@explorebound2 жыл бұрын
Hey mate, thanks for the advice! The ignition feed for my DCDC is definitely connected through an ignition power circuit but definitely a good thing to check - cheers. Yeah I've heard about a few issues with the cranking battery - might have to swap it out in future if it gives me any trouble.

Was tryna figure out if you were there before or after me. I took my family up in my ‘22 Dmax (with factory tyres 😜) to scatter my Father’s ashes on Monday 26 September. Left a bush chook and a lemonade near the box. Safe travels mate!

ooft that would have been a nightmare to restart that battery if you didnt have spare keys inside the cab, im sure you'll learn for next time.If you foresee yourself draining the battery that much i suggest perhaps a momentary pushbutton switch to re activate the battery. Alternatively, the redarc bcdc units are capable of automatically functioning as a powersupply intially to jump start the bms. How is the borrowed solar panels holding up? perhaps a fixed solar panel ontop on the cabin would be a great addition. The series is coming along great mate, keep it up.
@explorebound2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, we were pretty concerned until we saw the spare keys safe in the car haha! Definitely a good idea to pop in a switch to jumpstart the DCDC, however we don't think we'll bring the freezer again so fingers crossed wont encounter this scenario again. 🤞

Loved the video as I plan on doing Mt Meharry in Oct. I would love to go up in the afternoon to see the sunset but as a relative novice to 4w4ing would that be foolhardy of me to attempt such a descent in the dark?
@explorebound5 ай бұрын
Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed the video! If you take your time and are careful with wheel placement you should be fine to come back down at night, especially if you have someone who can help to guide you through the tricky bits from outside the vehicle. Alternatively, a lot of people camp at the top and come down the following day.

Those kings blankets are crap, invest in the 300w kt cables blanket get it from anaconda when on special, ull save 400 bucks. Having said kings is crap, they do do a semi decent 160w panel for just over a hundred bucks. They put out a good amperage to help ur battery out. If u keep leaving ur solar blanket out while off exploring its gonna go missing one day. A smaller freezer would be better. Ive used a brass monkey 22 litre. U can fit 2 weeks of meat in it. Doesnt use too much power. Looks like ur diy set up is working well. The car looks great, everything is a good proportion. Car tray canopy 👌
@explorebound2 жыл бұрын
We're thinking we probably wouldn't even bother with a freezer next time - the Bushman has a tiny freezer we could keep some basic meat in at a pinch, but even without that we reckon we'd be ok.

Good test for the Kitchen build, and only one screw fell out. Testament to your build quality, which is pretty damn good. How will you improve the battery storage, bigger battery maybe or dual secondary batteries?
@explorebound2 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate!! We don't think we'll bother taking the freezer along next time we do a trip like this, it was nice having an abundance of food but not necessary really, and without it the battery would have been fine. Next on the list is a decent solar panal kit I reckon. 🙂

As mentioned in the comments, a fixed panel will help and you can bring along the blanket as well for days when you are parked up. Also you could get a cryovac for meats in the bushmans freezer and meat in the fridge which will last longer.

Got up Mt MeHarry in a old 2007 stock standard Hilux with 27 inch cheese graters and no lift, with heavy canopy full of tools and crap.. courtesy of my company. If you know what your doing it's not too bad. I wouldn't get in the car with someone who's a novice however

Mt Meharry is on my "must visit" list for WA and it's part of my bucket list goal of reaching all the highest peaks on every state & territory on the Australian mainland (plus Tassie). So far I've done Mt Kosciuszko (NSW), Mt Bimberi (ACT), Mt Bogong (VIC), Mt Bartle Frere (QLD), and Mt Ossa (TAS). I better complete my list soon. I'm not getting any younger. I enjoyed the episode legends. Awe-inspiring views.👍

Thanks mate and that's quite an impressive list you've ticked off already! Mt Meharry is a great climb, I'm sure you'll love it when you get to make the climb yourself. 🙂

Looks incredible guys, how long did it take to reach the summit?

It depends where you start the official "climb" from, but from where we aired down the tyres it was probably a 30 min climb to the top, but about an hour from where we left the bitumen.

I wasn’t too surprised considering we were running the 85L upright which uses a fair bit (and we were opening a fair bit), the 47L freezer, and charging a mountain of camera gear and laptops for editing on the road. My bank account tells me I’m done with investing in upgrades for now - think we just won’t bring the freezer along next time. 😅
