I hope you can help. My 04 explorer shifts nicely, no clunking etc. Has 160xxx miles. My car either doesn't shift out of park, or go into park. It is completely random. Some days it works just fine. Other times I cant leave the house because it wont go into drive. Then let's say if I get to my destination and go to put into park, it won't. It takes several times (a few minutes) to either get into park or go into drive. We had a $3000 repair 6 months ago because timing chain guide broke. So we don't want to take to mechanic and spend hundreds more. Thanks for your time

I agree I've been working on mine for about 45 mins can't get the two tab lock undone pulled the other cover off and the top you should have shown how you done it from start to finish

Problem with my 05 is when in reverse it’s still on park and when on neutral it’s reverse and when on drive it’s neutral and so on any ideas?

I already removed everything. My problem is I can’t return shifting to natural or reverse , parking unless I get under and do it from gearbox so I can turn it off and remove the key. Know am still trying to figure out what’s wrong , is it the cable or shifting stick ?

Any idea,, I have 2007 ford explore same shifter,,, the shifter moves but it seems like it only goes into park & neutral,,, it starts, & when I think it is in neutral (I can push the vehicle & it does roll) but it will not “actually shift into drive” the shifter moves thru all gears but it’s not shifting into drive.???????? Any help??

First thing I would check is the fluid level and condition. May be a base transmission problem and have nothing to do with the shifter cable. These transmissions do not have a stellar reputation.

Ok so i replaced my shifter cable on my 07 explorer today since it broke yesterday. Now its not lining up properly with the indicator. It goes into park fine but when going into reverse i have to go to the netural spot on the indicator before it ever engages reverse then have to go to d for neutral and 3 for D. Any help would be would be amazing.

It's been awhile since I've done one now, but I thought the adjustment was down where it hooks to the transmission. If I recall correctly it is a white piece of plastic that snaps out and in to the correct tooth area. Sorry if that doesn't make sense or isn't clear enough. Like I said been awhile since I've done one now.

This guy is a time-waster. I doubt he knows the correct way to do the replacement; he's feeling out the whole process right before our very eyes and still never showed anything of substance; all talk and no action.
