Vancouver East Hastings street Homeless and Drug Crisis - Vancouver DTES Tent City on Oct 3 2022

Vancouver is Canada's dumping ground for the homeless, and some of them come from Alberta's neighbour and other provinces of the country. Perhaps free room and board is the reason for. Vancouver tent city is a good indication of homeless numbers residing in the city and keep increasing.

I worked in DT Vcr for 20 + years and I have to call bullshit on the "you leave them alone, they leave you alone". I was regularly harrased by aggessive beggars including verbal and physical assaults (all incidents were in daytime working hours). Sure, many are people just down on their luck and deserve our empathy and support, but some are violent, criminal d-bags.

yeah, definitely not all of them just poor fallen angels. Some are more evil then others. "another man suffered knife attack in DTE" popping up in local news pretty regularly. Well, comparing to some areas in US, DTE may be considered as "completely safe" (not that I have experience in any US walk around :) But... one better be aware of surroundings and have good reaction when walking like that in DTE. :) Just in case. Some people are so sick and may do aggressive things without any reason. PS: I used to drive through that epicenter of disaster at midnight. My daytime walking usually limited to Chinatown.

@@josephkay7785not sure if you knew it but they implemented a new law to try to put an end to aggressive panhandling. It’s made a very noticeable difference. At least that’s my experience.

I have been homeless twice in my life. I started out busking and later resorted to panhandling. I lived on the streets of Vancouver for a few months back in 92 but I have never seen anything like this with the tents and the opioids. I live in a group home in Ontario. I have been to AA and I have been NA. Sometimes I get really depressed. But most days I am happy and life is good. I have schizophrenia and I am on disability. I don’t busk or panhandle anymore. It was hard to change my lifestyle but it was worth it.

As bad as it gets here it is never as bad as being homeless and having a bad addiction. But even hear there is always the risk of getting evicted. The constant pressure to behave and stay out of trouble can be maddening. And the boredom can drive a person to drinking or drugs. I take my meds, collect disability and don’t ever expect myself to ever be employable. The mental health workers come by once a week and that just continues that narrative.

I know it seems like a broken situation there. But I would like to provide some hope. Many people get clean and recover with the help of Treatment and NA. But I also know that a lot of people don’t. I don’t know what it is that makes the difference. Here there are people who don’t want to quit smoking pot or don’t want to quit drinking. But I think hard drugs is a totally different situation. I have no drug connections in my life anymore other than the local pot shop occasionally, but I try not to go there. I was hooked on meth years ago but that isn’t even a temptation anymore. I don’t hang out with people who do that stuff anymore and I left those connections back in a different town. I have been watching invisible people. It’s a show that focuses on helping homeless people. But many of those people are homeless for reasons other than drugs. Many people simply don’t have enough income to house themselves.

Thank you for showing this video. I lost my brother in East Hasting in 2016 to drug overdose. He wanted to die his body was broken down from years of drug taking. We try everything to help him but he loved the lifestyle. He started at 13 and gave up at 47! We miss brother💞💕💔

I have a friend who lives in this area, and has for many years. He will not leave his home after 9. He has constant horror stories of what is actually happening. Trying to get him out of there, but finances and lack of affordable housing makes it hard!

I am from Central BC but live in Idaho and honestly, I find it embarrassing and horrifying that we allow the Canadian and US governments to send money overseas while our countries crumble. If that isn't enough to March on both capitals I don't know what is. Shame on all of us US and Canada both.

Thank you for filming this so that people can be aware of the devastating circumstances of our Canadian people living on the streets of Vancouver. I'm an artist and I lived near this area managing an artist building until 2000. To see how the homeless situation has grown in 22 years really breaks my heart. No one plans to grow up and be homeless. And yes, there is an odd sort of camaraderie and sense of honor amongst street people. I got to know many of them personally and grew to love them very much. We need to even out our society and get the priorities straight. Rich people, you cannot get richer. That's it. You are just too greedy. And to the rest of us. We need to stay strong and help wherever we can and I don't mean Sunday visits giving out sandwiches. There needs to be a concerted effort by the citizens of Vancouver to bring attention to the Mayor and council members that this is not good enough. Monies are there. There is enough money. Stop building so many roads and build a valley of tiny houses with education and medical facilities for these people. I don't see integrating them. That chance is gone. They need to be supported in a setting away from the madness of the city. Until they get food, clothing, medical assistance and and education or trade they won't function in our so called society. They are there because the rich people are too greedy. And others just can't see. We all need to love one another more.

Lived most of my adult life in Vancouver, raised my daughter there. Glad I moved away before the rot really surfaced, it was always there but at a fraction of the filthy decrepit Blade Runner like city it's becoming. Never going back, except the overflow makes it here to Vancouver Island turning our little cities into Walking Dead episodes. The answer is to be more tolerant, allow more drugs and very little intervention or rehabilitation. It's like killing them gently, with kindness and empathy. I see these lost souls when driving home at night from work, bent over at the waist, knees buckled, swaying back and forth, a garbage can their only anchor to this life. Its only getting worse as planned for Agenda 21, now Agenda 2030 or the Great Reset where "You will own nothing and be happy".

Lived here over 20 years also ..... Not all of the tents are "homed" by the unhoused. Some park there for 11+ hours selling drugs & then go home. Then come back again the next night and they are super imposing and are getting way more aggressive.

Nowadays street homeless and are fentanyl addicts, and not capable of doing anything no matter how simple it is. Street encampments are open air drugs markets brewing all sorts of crime. Majority of them will die from fentanyl overdose, or drugs related violence. Second hand fentanyl smoke can easily kill you in no time. Street homeless gradually destroy everything around themselves. We will never reduce street homelessness without reducing the amount of fentanyl drug available on our streets. If they can afford, they smoke fentanyl up to 100 times a day. That's how all these fires are started. Homeless advocates are mentally stuck in Pathological Altruism, and all they do is enabling fentanyl addicts remain as close as possible to their fentanyl dealer.

LAW-ABIDING....when the top cops are responsible for the sexual explotation of the very citizens they are to protect. When police turn a blind eye to organized crime and fellow officers indiscretions, we begin to see moral decay and helplessness in our communities. The clearance rates, coverage and crime severity rate in this province appalling. Sadly you are mistaken about Vancouver and the men and women who took an oth to serve and protect. They serve and protect themselves. My challenge to every citizen in this country, audit the police in your community one day a week for 6hrs, make it an adventure. I'm so sorry for Canada. Most things about a good Canada are not true, Including clean cities - beaches, and forests. It's a big lie. The first time I arrived in Vancouver in 2018, I was shocked. As soon as I left the airport door, I saw tissue, disposable glasses, and other garbage left in the city. The further I went, the more I saw them. Before I moved to Canada, I lived in Georgia, Armenia, Turkey, Serbia, The United States, and for a short time in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Netherlands, Germany, and England, but I have never seen the amount of garbage that people leave in different Canadian cities. Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, and Quebec are no less than Vancouver. Canadian and Canada Governments don't care about this tragedy. I think everything that says about Canada as a clean and powerful culture is not true. You don't need to travel to Canada to see this. Just watch some videos about walking in downtown Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, and Quebec. You will find the truth. Impossible for you to walk in a Canadian city and you don't see the dark side of that. Everywhere you will see garbage. You will never see this in Europe, Australia, the United States, Japan, and Korea. This amount of waste is not even seen in Malaysian, Indonesian, or Thailand cities. It is impossible for you to use public transport and not see a lot of garbage at stations or on the route. You will be surprised to find a lot of garbage even in the woods - by the rivers and on the beaches in Canada. I wish the Canadians woke up and had no enmity with their country. I randomly looked at videos from downtown Manchester and Concord in New Hampshire - Philadelphia - Detroit - Chicago - New York - Baltimore - Denver - Atlanta - Nashville, and Knoxville in the United States, Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham, and London in the UK, Paris, Marseille, Lyon, and Toulouse in France, Frankfurt, and Hamburg in Germany, Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane in Australia, Tokyo, Yokohama, and Osaka in Japan, Busan, Seoul, and Incheon in South Korea, Toronto - Quebec - Montreal - Winnipeg - Calgary - Vancouver - Victoria - Ottawa and Thunder Bay in Canada. we should be fair. The bitter truth must be accepted. Without any exaggeration. Completely impartial. I have to say that I didn't see a single piece of garbage in any of the other country's videos to convince myself. Without exaggeration, in all Canadian cities, you will find a piece of trash or garbage on the ground less than every hundred meters. It must have an important reason. I do not know. But this is a bitter truth. You can try. This country should be brought closer to its exaggerated claim. Certainly, some Asian countries such as Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and even Malaysia are much cleaner compared to Canada. Of course, we should not forget that Canada claims to be one of the 10 cleanest countries in the world. And cities like Vancouver and Toronto claim to be one of the 5 cleanest cities in the world.

@I I I find the biggest garbage problems in Canada are; not enough public garbage cans; they don't empty them often enough (they are almost always full and overflowing); and not near enough staff out there looking after it all. I live in Nova Scotia and our household garbage is only picked up every 2 weeks.

I will NEVER trust a street person. We have so many programs in my area and they reject them. They walk into my neighborhood early morning stealing anything from brooms, garden rakes, to even children's toys like scooters and bikes. I'm done. They yell and get aggressive and scare my little one sometimes. My compassion is gone. Step on my property and you're gonna leave with severe limp.

i lived in east van when i went to elementary school(east hastings elementary) in the late 90s, moved to the burbs for a year or two and then moved to alberta. i came through vancouver on drives during covid lockdowns but usually at night so i just got a glimps and smell from the tent cities. when i came back in july this summer i was blown away how bad two areas in perticular are. ive never seen so many people openly shooting and smoking on the side of a major street and the sidewalks in this area were unwalkable there were so many drug addicts. this city went downhill bad since it held the games. bc needs mental health facilities and to put addicts in controlled rehab/detainment facilities. they litterally cant help themselves. i do like that i can camp damn near anywhere tho makes it easy to rest after an mtb ride lol

I visited Vancouver many years ago. There were a few rougher areas but nothing like this. I know rents are insane there, but who would want to pay $3000 to $4000 rent to live in these areas? 6 roommates sharing 2 bedrooms? How do the homeless support themselves? Panhandling? Illegal activities? Are some working but can't afford rent? I'm on the east coast and homelessness is increasingly here as well. It seems almost hopeless now. Will things ever improve?

Driving through Mexico City there were tons of homeless. It was 2002 and my disposable cameras didn't pick up the rows of people sleeping on their blankets that they carried rolled up during the day. Every grassy section was packed with people. Empty pop bottles everywhere because they didn't have to pay deposit for them so no one picked them up to earn money. I don't know if that changed. But there was definitely homeless in Mexico City in 2002 that I passed on the cheapest bus ever. But no tents that I could see. Had to be stuff that could be carried with them

Here you need to pay $200/week for a room in my city, some students pay $160/week for a room with no window, and can not have 3 meals per day. To live in the cheapest share houses, you still need to pay $160/week/person. This is so called rich countires, sure there are many people have $10,000,000 or more. 😀

There is a reason why long time resident taxpayers are giving up and leaving Vancouver and it is well portrayed here. Like a recovered addict told me, most actually like that lifestyle and don't want to change. Those that do and stay sober are rare but very precious. Those that don't want to change should not be taking over the streets as if it belongs to them and be made to clean the streets to keep them occupied. Vancouver is filthy enough. As for real homeless people who do not do drugs but have ended up in the bowels of Vancouver, the city should be helping them first before they get flushed with the ones refusing to change. It should be pretty easy to triage the repeat offenders and bring back the city to what it once was.

Vancouver is SAFE SAFE. There is nothing comparing to some cities south of the borders (I visited: Seattle, Portland, San Fran, Oakland, LA). You're welcome to Vancouver as a normal traveler and has nothing to worry about safety. Nobody will bother at all (except Canada Border Services Agency, my only guess). E Hastings strip (5 mins walk to downtown and waterfront) is about 4 to 6 blocks occupied by these guys. They are struggling and some are in rough shapes but they are friendly and cool as a cucumber. you don't bother them they never bother you. If sometimes you run into a panhandler asking for spare change, pull out your pocket if you can or else simply ignore and walk away. No one will follow or run after at all. I live in Vancouver almost 4 decades so I understand this locale well enough.

This condition, by our definition, is depressing. We don't have this kind of situation at all in our country. We'll never think of being robbed or pickpocketed when we go out into the street even after midnight. That applies to girls as well. Drug-addiction is an ubiquitous problem in the States, but on the West Coast it's more of a 'homeless' problem because the drug-culture there can't come to terms that drugs are a problem.

One thing I want to share with you that the drug overdosed killed average 6 to 7 daily in BC, if this situation is a drug-crisis they should be gone died within 6 to 12 months, but the numbers are still here and keep increasing. this is not pretty. i tend to think we'd be better off if we legalized pills anyhow. fentanyl and needles not so good but less harmful is better.. to bad no perfect answer. we can't arrest and rehab our way out of this. not so far so we need to learn to live with drugs. like we live with cannabis, alcohol creates problems. but in general legal is above board and illegal is a much worse scene.

I was homeless for a while, lived in a pup tent. Got sick and tired of being sick and tired. Picked myself up got cleaned up. Got a job. 20 years later , I own my home, no mortgage. Worked my ass off to get here. If I can do it, they can do it. They just don't want to work. They think the world owes them something. The world doesn't give a shit about you.
