Canada - What they don't want to show you: Homeless on East Hastings Vancouver in September 2023

How to explain Vancouver's Downtown Eastside, E Hastings street. It's tough as rubber and complicated. Living on streets is harsh and sometimes the street people have to stay awake all night because so many things are going on in the dark.
As part of the City’s commitment to public safety, City's crew have removed an average of 2 tons of garbage from these sections on a daily basis in an effort to keep the area as clean and accessible as feasible for residents, businesses and those living on the street.
BUT, is there any improvement yet to see? Leave your reasonable comments, please.

So many mentally ill and physically disabled. It’s heartbreaking. I was born and raised here, went shopping there with my mom as a girls day out in the 60’s. We need to do better by these folks. Unfortunately it’s in almost every community now. And with the housing crisis it’s going to get worse. I think Edmonton does a better job of housing the homeless. Thank you for sharing this.

My mentally ill brother spent 20 years on those streets. Every year I would go from Edmonton and make the trip to see how he was doing. What I saw down there is what you are seeing. These fellow Canadians are in dire need . Drugs, mental illness, alcoholism, poverty. They are someone's brother, sister, mom, dad, uncle, grand parents. With all of this comes a stench that takes days to get out of your nose. The only time I saw those streets power washed to help stop the stench and disease was when Adriane Clarkston walk on the streets and when the Olympics were on. My brother was not drug addicted , he was mentally ill. He died a year ago .

Hi there, this is why so many people don't want them to close to their homes. I live an hour and a half away from Vancouver. But we still have problems with the homeless. They have started living by the Vedder River and have been given the boot 1 time so far. They just moved about a block away from the spot. The amount of garbage and needles was just horrible. I have no problems with the homeless, but I don't want them rifling around my garage at 4 in the morning again.

You are so delusional, if you gave each homeless person down there that sit on their ass and does drugs all day 1 million dollars they are still going to end up dead or with the same issues. The main people who deserve a chance are the ones who actually clean up after themselves and hold themselves accountable for their problems which 90% of them don’t. Not only are the streets like this in Vancouver, it is all over Canada. Homelessness and the drug crisis exist in every community. Makes me so sad and we need policies and facilities put in place. Affordable houses. Rehabilitation facilities. All of it needs to put into place for these people.

It's funny how the title says "homeless" but doesn't mention ANYTHING about drugs when it's obvious for many, that's what probably caused the homelessness. I don't see any difference in comparison to Kensington Pa, just in a smaller scale

Riverview (Essondale) shouod have remained open as an emergency blanket to help the mentally these people don’t know how to live a normal life because they have never been taught the right way

Vancouverites still have the BLUE days. 2 or 3 days ago when a mentally-disorder man randomly and brutally attacked people on the streets, causing one fatal and the other, hand was detached. The incidence should not happened and avoidable if Riverview remained open. Vancouver is not safe anymore? Riverview Hospital used to be a place for them to stay and keep the public safe. Politicians are you there? Don't turn a blind eye. Nowadays, how dare you walk in downtown Vancouver?

That is a very ecologically friendly idea. Everyone wins! Why didn't David Suzuki, our foremost thinker and scientist come up with such a clever strategy? They are living all around him. Trudeau and Freeland have lunch on a regular basis with him and consult him before implementing any government program.
