Yes, admittedly Cyclops did not leave an impression of outstanding resourcefulness and competence in the original films: His visor snatched by Toad in X1, rendering him immediately uncombattive, and being knocked out cold in less than 30 seconds by Lady Deathstrike in X2. His main purpose in those films seemed to be as a drama-foil in the Wolverine/Phoenix relationship.

World Breaker Hulk acknowledged his cosmic level power, after Scott continually and literally, put him on his emerald posterior. Scott has an unacknowledged secondary/latent mutation, to Intuit trigonometry. Essentially, he can kick your ass in pool, and bounce his blast of two corners and hit you in the back of the head at a glance. He has repeatedly beaten Wolverine in a No Powers battle. Barring Logan's claws and Scott's ocular devastation, the latter has continually beaten an adamantium laced, regenerative body nearly to death, multiple times, through shear martial ability.

Maybe the MCU will bring him back as a displaced variant for a Young Avengers film. There is comic precedence for a younger Cyclops existing in comics in a time travel plot, and he was a part of the Champions for a time, so maybe that can give Tye a way for a proper return.

Marsdens Cyclops suffered from 1 thing , bad writing, he was generally just a brooding sulky character in all the movies , the script writers should have brushed up on their comics and gave him a better part, not taking anything away from Marsden as an actor I think he's fairly decent (disturbing behaviour, anchorman) he was playing the hand he was dealt in the X men series which was a pretty poor hand.

If you notice….the “boss” villain didn’t necessarily stop the beam. She tried to stop Scott from using it AT ALL at first n when it came at her, she knocked SCOTT away to disrupt the beam. Point being….even she did NOT want to get hit by the optic “punch” beams. Those things truly pack a punch 😅

Comics have millions of retcons, but the most commonly cited reason is a physical injury he got from falling out of a plane as a child. It is hypothesized that the trauma of losing his family in that same incident may also have been part of the reason. Any version of Cyclops where his beams generate heat thus causing burning or melting because of it are fundamentally inaccurate. Concussive energy doesn't generate heat. But it can be strong enough to completely pulverize metal so quickly it looks like the beam is slicing through.

they are concussive, actually his eyes are portal to a dimension which is filled with these concussive energy , so he basically just channels those concussive energy to use as a weapon. Some times it's also said that he absorbs ambient Radiation like sun light , radiation and other forms of energy from his surroundings .
