So to clear some things up. Dillards closed itself off from the mall because the Dillard family actually owns their department store which is why it is still open and a full discount Dillards. It was actually one of the first Dillards opened in Arkansas so it has sentimental value to the family. Now on to the owner Judy Vu…she has actually been arrested multiple times for various different things but the two biggest were lawsuits where she refused to pay. She had rent so high that no one could afford to keep a store running in there long enough to bring in more business. This mall used to actually be a great mall back when I was growing up. It first started going downhill when Walmart left then the bigger department stores followed like sears and JCPenney. When Judy took over though it ruined the mall ever being returned to anything worth actually going to. There is speculation that she set the fire herself to get the insurance money since she is in debt over her head. The only way this place could really thrive and return to any kind of former glory is if the mall was sold and either redone or torn down and turned into an outlet.

At 5:24 was a view that I remember so distinctly. The movie theatre entrance behind you, to what would be your left from this POV, was where I left after watching The Dark Knight. I snuck in after a movie I was watching ended (don't even remember what it was), because The Dark Knight started way later and I didn't know what else to do. I came in right at the scene with the Joker and his pencil trick, a moment that probably changed my life. After the movie was over, 5:24 was exactly was I saw, but it was warm and bright and excited. I remember talking to my dad about how cool the movie had been, that I never thought I'd like Batman, but the villain was awesome! And looking at the state its in- I'm choked up. I can remember the day this mall opened! It was an attraction for all of Southeast Arkansas. It started declining after Wal-Mart moved its storefront to the "new" supercenter in the early 2000's. After that, it went through several ownerships, other name brands stores pulled out because of declining foot traffic and mis-management. At one time it was a gorgeous place full of nice places. The boarded up place next to grandma's kitchen, originally Garfield's, was the original movie theater. As you walk into the main intersection it was Dillard's (still in operation) down the left corridor, Sears down the center corridor, and right was the main body of the mall. The Subway restaurant was the first Subway in PineBluff. So many memories in this mall.....

A friend of mine had a salon in the mall, and she kept noticing that things had been moved around between closing and opening. I recommended getting a trail camera. After getting the camera, she found out that the mall owner had been going into her shop before opening each day and doing her hair and makeup in the salon. The mall owner also harassed tenants and inquired about each business’s monthly income. Her reason? She wanted to see if she needed to raise the rent on the business owners based on their income. She also faced legal action from Garfield’s restaurants due to her attempt to reopen the restaurant as “Garfield.” There were so many unhealthy and unethical practices under that ownership. The mall was already on its way out, but the last owner dealt the lethal blows.

So I worked in the theater at the pines mall right before the mall closed. I built that will smith movie set up that you see about 23 mins into this video. The theater was closed for a while do to the owner of the mall showing pirated movies. Then reopened when a man from California came and invested a lot of money into the theater. So later on the theater sued the owner of the mall due to her not keeping the mall maintained. There was no heat or air in the mall, the ceiling was falling in, there was just a lot of things that she just wouldn’t get fixed. Long story short she lost her case, the investor took what money he could from his investment and moved back to California. There is alot more to all this. That is just the summary ig of it. But I really enjoyed the video. It definitely took me back to be a mall rat. And yes I worked at the theater at the end of 2019. And I worked at night and yes I have always had a very creepy feeling about the theater especially the film room upstairs. Anyways if RangerRick is ever interested on going back to the pines mall. I wouldn’t mind going and giving a different perspective of the place or if you have any questions I wouldn’t mind answering them. I grew up in that mall and remember so many stores coming and going. I met and spoke with the last owner (Judy) a few times. I always got the impression she was just short of having a nervous break. The real reason she was arrested was that she finally lost it after someone from the state served her about her taxes and such. She went outside into the parking lot in front of the food court where people were coming in and out, pulled out an Arkansas state flag, and took a dump on it in broad view of everyone. This mall has many great things about it, but it was always a hotbed for crime as well. From the 80's where people would hide under cars in the movie theatre parking are and slit the back of people's ankles as they walked by, to the gang shootings that always happened in the early 2000's in the food court area.

I lived in Pine Bluff from 2009 to 2011 and i worked at the JCPenny in the Home dept. Even then the mall was very empty, more empty spaces than stores. As a New England native born and raised my short time in pine bluff broke my heart for the people there but mostly the kids. My son was a student at Jack Robey middle school who got As and Bs. When we moved back to Massachusetts found out that an 8th grade A/B student in pine bluff is the equivalent education to a 2nd/3rd grade level by Massachusetts standards. It was an extremely heartbreaking eye opening experience for me. Yes there is crime violence and things that come with it. But that is what happens when you dont invest in the youth and provide them with things to do. Why they did not donate those books to the Pine Bluff Library is beyond me. I have a lot of love for Pine Bluff and its people who despite it all showed this yankee true southern hospitality.❤

Hate to see this mall in such a sad state. It had been declining for the past 15 years. Little did we know that malls all across America would be struggling soon after. Unfortunately, Pine Bluff was hit especially hard by crime and severe population decline. It was named one of America's fastest shrinking cities several years in a row. It's a stark contrast to the bustling boom town it was in the 50-60's. Many years of declining foot traffic, theft, and mismanagement led to tenants leaving the mall. Sears, a main anchor store, went out of business. Others like JCPenny hung on, but ultimately decided not to renew their contracts. Dillard's remains open as the state (maybe national) clearance store for the company. Walmart pulled out in 2004 or so and most locals mark that as when the mall's offical decline began. I remembera full food court, tons of people and an awesome arcade called Alladin's Castle back in the 90's. Every single available store had a tenant. It was a safe place to shop and we all had fun. Fun fact(s): there is a second theater near the food court that had closed 20 years ago. It had 8 screens just like the theater you started the video off in. It would have been interesting to see in there since it has long been sealed. Then Governor Bill Clinton cut the ribbon at the mall opening in 1986. As to the owner, she had run afoul with the rents and basic building maintenance. She owed more than one person for repairs and she had several judgments against here. Ultimately, this resulted in liens being placed on the building. Oh, and it smelled bad before it was abandoned. Now, there is a casino across the road from the mall. Make of that what you will, but the tax revenue will undoubtedly help this community if used properly.

I used to work in a movie theater in a mall in the very early 2000s that was supposedly haunted. Many a nights I closed it alone and heard creepy stuff and experienced creepy things. This video takes me back to those times. Abandoned theaters creep me out and intrigue me. Sounds like noises could be rats, raccoons, possums or all three. Could also be vandals raiding the place and hiding. This was such a cool video though!

I live about twenty minutes away from this, grew up here. Used to go here all the time, still eat at the Wendy's in the parking lot occasionally. Used to buy books and comics at the Waldenbooks, video games, CDs, and movies at the FYE, etc. I'd love to see the mall return to its former glory, but man, it's not just Pine Bluff that's dying, it's pretty much all of Southeast Arkansas. If we can't find a way to get some people to start moving in, there's just not gong to be anyone left here at all. 😪 Breaks my heart...

PSA to any urban explorers, don’t interact with locals, if someone else is in the mall leave and wait until you can go without visitors. I grew up in pine bluff and there were many shootings that happened here. It’s not even gang violence, just guns and bad people. Stay safe and be smart about your surroundings.

Grew up going to this mall every weekend when I was a teenager. It was going down hill way back then so I'm actually surprized it lasted as long as it did. I did move away for Army duty for close to a decade but never realized there was even a laser tag place in this mall.

This is truly heartbreaking.. I spent most of my early years at this mall .. I would meet my friends every weekend for the movies.. the last owner legit ran it to the ground yea it was on its way before her ownership.. but I believe if they would’ve sold it to the investors from Texas instead of her it would’ve been a completely different outcome .. welcome to the bluff tho ig🙄

Grew up there saw that mall built and went to first movie there in front at movie theater - sears , JCPenney all there and regal hair salon with my first engagement ring brought there at Kay’s - worked my first job there in a sun glass shop in the middle - many came walked the mall and ate at food court on dates had modeling shows there - when then the owners kept money ran it into ground as a tax write off - one by one shops closed and today is what we see - sad could of been like opryland mall or the big dyseeburg mall or even hot springs which is also dying slowly -

Dillard's Clearance store is the only store still in there, but it's been closed off from the main mall for a long time. The mall has been on fire and for sure hasn't been taken care of for years by Judy Vu. I don't care if it's day or night, I'm not going to be in that mall! You were a brave man to go in there!! Who knows how many homeless people live in there! The fire was on February 12, 2022. The fire marshals said that the fire traveled up rather than spread out, though it still did a lot of damage inside. It was thought to have started from the area of the mall manager, sort of strange considering she had already been in trouble for multiple things. I never read what they said the cause was. The fire was far enough away from Dillard's, that it didn't get any damage. The mall closed in June of 2020 It was supposed to have been bought out in Dec. 2023, but it must have not happened because according to tax records, it's still owned by James Vu and two others. Looks like the movie theater is a wonderful home for rats, mice and other vermin! How lovely! Lots of popcorn and candy for them to eat. The theater closed in January of 2016, then it was bought out in 2019 and called the Saracen Cinema 8, but then closed in 2021. I fell out laughing when you saw that big bear! Sad that those books couldn't have been donated, such a waste!! Always enjoy your video, this one included. I'm betting it gave you some goosebumps! Not the greatest area, but ok in the daytime. Hope this helps answer some of your questions.
