In 1798, Thomas Vennum married his wife, Elizabeth Kirkpatrick in Pennsylvania. After having seven children, Thomas went off to fight in the War of 1812 where he became a Colonel. Once he returned, they had their eighth child. Colonel Thomas, his wife, Elizabeth, and their seven children, Thomas junior died in 1820, came to Iroquois county, Illinois in the fall of 1834. In 1843, their grandson, Thomas, died at the age of 11. Colonel Vennum set aside an acre of his land for a family cemetery where young Thomas was buried. Time and weather have not been friendly to this cemetery as it has fallen into disrepair. Many of the tombstones are broken and some are just stacked in piles.
