A German perspective for all those saying what improper people their children must be: Land property taxes are considerable here in Germany, and also the cost to merely keep the essentials running to prevent it from rotting are quite steep if you don't actually use the space. For the latter, you would probably have to invest way North of 50k, more like 150k minimum to make it livable in modern times. (Or rather even legal to live in.) It looks like the last owners didn't do ANYTHING after the 50s or 60s. You would have to replace all electrical wiring down to the street level entry point, including outlets and breakers and all that, possibly also all water piping, replace all windows with double- or triple-pane, the COMPLETE heating system (incl. the radiators), redo and insulate all the roofs, possibly also the outer walls, and also convert all the medical rooms back to appartment style. This house is nothing but a thousand miles deep money pit, as sad as it is. All this is assuming that all the legal questions about the inheritance have been worked out, which can be really complicated, especially if the heirs are at odds with each other. There is also a tax for inheriting things, and especially in such cases, it can easily result in financial nonsense to even accept the inheritance. It might actually be that keeping it in a "legal limbo" is the most sensible thing to do, from the POV of the children. As far as I can tell, the mistake was already made by the previous owners, in that they didn't even attempt to keep the house updated, even in the most basic aspects. It probably was technically a ruin, financially speaking, when the old lady still lived there. Saving it even back then would have taken someone with a deep affection for it, and even deeper pockets. It would have been a project of love, not one of fiscal sanity.

I believe it has been bought by the state at some point because of it's historical value ("Denkmalschutz"). As far as I know they have been trying to renovate it for years now but there is not enough funding/too much bureaucracy involved. Easyest way would be to find a new private owner who is willing to pay the money himself (this has worked for all the mansions next to it). Sadly this place is too much of a trainwreck, as @Fonk Badonk already stated. The town this house rots in is full of lost places BTW, so that is another reason for the current state. I already visited their abandoned hotel, their "Wandelhalle" and this mansion of course. I havent been there for a while now but I'm sure things have not changed much. You will find countless news-articles about their lost places too if you are willing to do a bit of research. Really interesting stuff if you only know the shining "fassade" of this town. Damn, my english is rusty...

Here in Germany, this place seems to be very popular among some urbexers, especially the history behind it. When I did my research a few months ago, I came across hundreds of pages of internet forums discussing the family history of the owners, which appears to be quite unusual and eventful. Of course, that brought up many crazy theories and some attention to the place. It’s not exactly well hidden also. So the place was trashed pretty soon and apparently it got even worse lately. Telling from the latest pictures I saw, it’s not even worth a visit anymore. Really a shame. However, wonderful video as always. Glad you could document it soon enough. Greetings from Germany, Oliver.

Sad that these knuckle dragging vandals can simply wreck two lifetimes of work in a matter of hours. Left unheated, it won’t take long before the rot sets in and it becomes a candidate to be ‘abgerissen’. In Europe, if the building is listed as historical and it would cost beyond your means to repair the house (or you just don't want too) a lot of people, especially within Germany, France & Switzerland will often leave the house to fall into disrepair knowing as soon as that happens you're free to tear it down and either sell the land for building, or build on it yourself. This happens a lot in the Alpine regions.
@lajya012 жыл бұрын
That happens in N. America too . Listed buildings must be restored with custom made materials and/or required highly specialized labour. They become too expensive to repair and unattractive for buyers (beside those who plans to let the building rot to get a demolition permit).

Happy New Year! Seems this doctor had a good taste: music, vine & books makes a awesome combination. 2:15 Didn't expact to see a ~50-80 year old Grotrian-Steinweg. Probably the most expansive piano I've ever seen in an abandoned place and hopefully someone will rescue it from complete destruction. It would be a real shame. 3:28 😂 Didn't expact that as well. It's basically my kitchen lamp. But mine is white in the middle and has two additional metal clamps to hold the flurencent tube in place.
@soursopmcgee86822 жыл бұрын
Yeah but what's the cost of restoration for that piano ?
@Troppa172 жыл бұрын
@@soursopmcgee8682 I'm not an expert but for what I saw it would be worth it in this condition. I think mainly the keyboard needs a overhaul, maybe some wooden parts had to changed and it obviously has to be adjusted and tuned. This will surely cost at least a couple of grands but if that will restore its sound you definitivly wouldn't make a loss on it. And btw sitting 30ish years in an abandoned place will make for a great story and restoring it maybe an unique sound.

"This dude was obsessed with books!" Ummm.... yeah, if it was from around 1982, that was where you got your knowledge from. The only electronics were television, telephone and radios. Computers available were early model IBMs, VIC-20, TRS-80s... no internet. No doubt he had A LOT of books covering a wide variety of topics, especially for his practice. Also, the X-Rays all bring of the crotch area makes sense, being that he was a urologist.

I think I've seen this place on some other urbex vid, and I think you're right, this place has been destroyed by vandals. As I recall, when previously explored, there was a lot more furniture, more of that vast hoard of books in the shelves, and the piano still worked.

Based on the exterior design, it may have been much more classical inside at one time. But between conversions to medical rooms and what appears to be the last owner's more modern taste, all those old details are gone. Given what it would have cost to redo the interior and the now surrounding build up, it's unlikely to survive.

Same process in the US unfortunately. Extremely outdated and incoherent laws regarding how things are supposed to be passed down and distributed, something I have over 2 years experience dealing with now. 😭 I totally understand where these heirs are coming from, it cost me around $10,000 just to claim my own family's property from the state who created 5,000 hoops to jump through otherwise they suddenly own everything AND AFTER THAT NIGHTMARE you have to argue with your siblings about who gets what and it easily lands in court as it did in my case. Imagine spending 2 years doing paperwork with the state to own grandpa's car he wanted to pass down to you only for your asshole brother to come out of nowhere and try to claim it saying it's his!
