There are two types of truck stops in Germany. "Rasthöfe" (rest stops) directly on the motorway with on and off ramps and "Autohöfe" (truck stops) which are about 1-2 km from the motorway. The "Autohöfe" are more for commercial vehicles, there is more space for trucks and there are sanitary facilities (showers) and recreational facilities. Most also offer a workshop for trucks. The restaurants offer real food (no fastfood) for a good price.

"Truck diesel" is a bigger separate tanker pistol with a bigger hose too. It is for faster flow. The pistol does not fit the passenger cars filling hole.

So clean and orderly compared with our US truck stops. Real food offerings too! Haven’t been over there in too long so thanks for sharing this. I definitely miss the food the most. The Germans know how to cook and eat well, that’s for sure.

While this of course is used by trucks and truckers, this doesn't really qualify as a truck stop, but rather a large gas station with truck parking. The "real" truck stops are usually off the highway albeit only by a stone throw in connection with logistics centers, 24h truck service etc.. there are of course fewer of these, but they do usually offer quite a bit more for truckers. The whole "entire village truck stops" complete with banks and barbershops are not too common in Europe. Not yet anyway. Part of the reason for this is of course very widespread use of online banking etc.

Dad drove trucks, he mainly drove in southern Europe, Italy, Spain, France and Greece, and we coming from Scandinavia, delivering food-raw meat like pork and bringing home fruit. We were often with him on his trips, my brother and i. It was very safe, as those cultures are very kind and protective toward kids, he could easialy leave us alone the many different place while he had to take care of the papir work. We got to see all of Europe and meet a lot of cultures from a very early age on. It was rather normal to meet other kids on our travles, because, many of the other drivers had their kids with them too. School sommer vacation lasted 7 weeks where i am from. Good video, God speed and stay healthy.

Good to see you again, hope you are well. It's a few years since I did a big road trip in Europe, driving is expensive with tolls and fuel costs but the services are pretty good, no trouble finding decent food and reasonable parking. In 2023 we did a coast to coast in the US we were pretty impressed with the roads and costs, not so much the food. But hey come to the UK some time, you will soon be bouncing around like corks through all the pot holes, and stuck in traffic jams, and it ain't cheap. Road rage is free though....... ATB

I think it's a true statement to say that food, and meal time, is a more important thing in Europe. There's more of a culture of a sit-down lunch rather than a grab-and-go. In France it is quite common to see EVERY type of worker head to a Restaurant at 12pm for lunch (There are many cheap but superb restaurants in France). You can always tell the good ones because there will be trucks parked along the roadside near some remote country restaurant.

In the UK we dont have the rule where we cant drive on Sundays. European rules which are the same as the UK apart from the Sundays as I think that is just in Germany. We can drive upto 9 hours in a shift but we must take 45 minutes break by time we hit 4 hours 30 minutes. Twice a week, we can extend to 10 hours driving for example. If we were delayed and ran out of the 9 hours. We can take another 45 minute break and drive an additional hour to get to base or to a suitable parking place. We also have weekly driving limits of 56 hours in a fixed week and in a fixed fortnight (2 week period) we are limited to 90 hours driving. We can be on duty upto 13 hours in a shift, but can extend to 15 hours if the driver wishes maximum 3 times per week Between each shift, we need to have a daily rest which is 11 hours for the regular rest or we can reduce to 9 hours 3 times per week. We are limited to 60 hours of combination of physical work and driving time in a fixed week but we cant average more than 48 hours per week work in a 17 week period. If we worked 13 hours 1 minute. It counts as a 15 hour shift. Whenever we use up a 15 hour shift, we automatically use up a reduced rest period as everything needs to add up to 24 hours. For example start at 6am on a Monday and finish by 7pm our rest period starts at 7pm and will finish at 6am on Tuesday. But if we start at 4am Tuesday, then we only had 9 hours rest and uses up a 15 hour which you can either use on the Tuesday where you work unitl 7pm which is 24 hours after your started your previous rest or if you finish before 5pm. You will lose that 15 hour shift. However, finishing at 7pm to use up your 15 hours will also cost you a reduced 9 hour rest as your daily rest after the Tuesday shift will need to be finished before 4am on Wednesday. Even if you dont start until 7am Wednesday and had 12 hours off. It will count as only 9 hours but you can start fresh full shift from 7am Wednesday We also have split rests too where you can have 2 rest periods in one 24 hour period. This will extend your duty time to 15 hours but will not count as a 15 hour shift. Your first rest has to be at least 3 hours uninterupted and followed by at least 9 hours uninterupted later on and the 9 hours part of the rest has to be completed before the 24 hours are up on since you started your duty. We have weekly rests (resets) too which are at least 45 hours off for a regular weekly reset. Or we can reduce to at least 24 hours off for a reduced reset. Whenever you use a reduced reset, whatever hours you were short of 45 hours will have to be carried out (paid back) by the end of the third working week on top of an uninterupted reset of 45 hours. For example at the end of week 1, you had a reduced reset of 36 hours which is 9 hours short. By the end of the third working week, you will need to take a full 45 plus 9 hours to reset Our logs reset 00.01 hours on a Monday morning and anything you do will be counted until midnight the following Sunday. Which is what we call a fixed week. We also have a card to insert into our tachograph which is the size of a driving license, looks like a driving license and has a chip that records all your hours in the tachograph which can not be removed while on duty. At times, drivers go wrong and punishments can be anything from a verbal warning to a 6 months prison sentence depending on the serverity or if you are regularly taking the piss with minor infringements Look up on youtube TheRockgod23 who is an owner driver and very knowledgeable or Dave the Angry trucker for funny videos. Both from the UK

Pretty freaky self-cleaning toilet bowl, eh? Scared me the first time I saw one, 20 years ago, at Rome's Olympic village housing. Autogrill is another highway rest area operator in Europe with over 400 locations. Way upscale compared to what we have in the US. Actually had memorably delicious dinner at one, made to order by a pasta chef, at a stop north of Rome. Another Autogrill stop on the French A9 approaching Spain treated me to an excellent Paella. Unfortunately, never had a memorable rest area meal back home in the USA. Last tour there in 2019, we leased a diesel Citroen C5 Aircross with a 2.0 liter and 8 Speed. It's a big comfortable SUV that averaged 64/mpg, which helped with the high fuel cost.

Fortunately the military unit I was assigned to in England meant we got to spend a lot of time in Germany. Mainly the Alhorn and Sembach area. When I was stationed in N.C. we went to Ramstein, K-Town and Volgeweh areas. Fastest I drove on the Autobahn was 120 m.p.h. Back then this was dictated by tire rating on your vehicle and weather conditions. Oh yeah, absolutely no camping out in the left hand lane. Pass and move over. There were sections with posted speed limits.

That's not a truckstop , mate ! That is a motorway service , where most of the low cost drivers stop to spent the night, because they don't have to pay for overnight parking. A real truckstop is often situated near an exit away from the motorway. It provides the same service but is more pionted to the trucker and the food is better. Here you pay for your stay, but you get your spendings refunded on your meal or shower or whatever you buy there. I've been a trucker for almost 40 years and drove mostly into Germany. After the unification from Germany, these truckstops were build mainly by big oilcompanies as BP or SHELL. And thanks,no thanks for the offer , but I've driven for a good company that paid honnest money and social security. I have a very well pension now.

Sadly today with all the traffic and people dont know how to drive properly, its not so fast anymore.

Gas stations in Germany serve the niche, which in the US is occupied by convenience stores, like 7/11. Depending on the state, notmal stores, like supermarkets, have limited opening hours, ranging from 7 am to 10 pm in my state, but also 7:30 am to 8 pm e.g. in Bavaria. And all of them are closed on sundays or public holidays. Gas stations are excempted, they can sell good to travellers at any time of the day and week, but how can they see who is travelling? Therefore they usuaasly offer a small range of grocery articles even outsisde normal shop openin hours, though they can be quite a bit more expensive. But the profit margin on fuels is so small, that now most gas stations make most of their profits from selling groceries and snacks. Another issue is that by law trucks heavier than 3.5 tonnes cannot be parked in residential areas, only if they pick up freight or make a delivery, so truck drivers have to find a parking spot either in an industrial zone or at a truck stop to spend their breaks and to sleep. I have seen trucks, which had a bicycle strapped to the back of the cab, which the drive used to cycle to town after parking his truck in an industrial area, e.g. to get to a local supermarket.

Despite all the beautiful images, it is still a major concern for truck drivers to find a rest stop within the conditions of the generally applicable driving time regulation. Most truck stops are overcrowded and too limited to provide everyone with a safe parking space. It can be very stressful for a trucker to find a stop within the maximum driving time allowed. And while parked a small movement of your truck due to rearrangement of parked trucks can already lead to a fine for not adhering to a mandatory driving pause.

It's much better to use industrial parks for resting overnights. Very rarely anyone bothers you and often there are even guards patrolling the area. Roads inside of industrial parks or the roads leading there are perfect for this and they often have parking bays for trucks that are waiting which will be empty at night.

Just another bit of information for American Truck drivers. In Europe if you have to take your mandatory 45 hour reset, away from home. Then it cannot be taken in your Truck. You must take it away from the Truck in a Hotel or some other form of Accommodation. And that has to be paid for by the Company. But as an Owner/ Driver I do not have to follow that rule. You can reduce your reset to 24 hours but you have to make up the extra hours in one go added to another break of at least 9 hours by the end of the third week🙄🙄. Very confusing I know. I drive from the UK to many countries around Europe and Also follow your Y/ Tube channel.

You get that good quality video off of your cell phone? Is there a lot of potholes on the Autobahn or the regular roads? I forgot the other fellows name that is related to Tanya and I was wondering if you caught up with Tanya's relative from last year? Looks like most of those trucks are scanned yet are the Scania trucks from what I think i see.

I've driven thousands of kilometers on the German roads (not as a trucker). Never came across a pothole once. And I've only ever experienced a few in my home country, Denmark. The asphalt on the German Autobahn is incredible thick, so it's almost impossible for potholes to form. In some of the porer countries (mostly Eastern Europe), I've seen the roads can be bad, but I've never experienced it myself.

Does paying a Euro for using the restroom discourage graffiti and vandalism? Or are those even issues in Germany?

U.S. truck stops are the best and our semis are legendary. It was nice to see how things are in Germany but I feel very lucky to live and drive a truck in America.

This is not a truck stop. We don't have any rest stops that are purely for trucks. The majority of these are used by cars to take a break. But trucks also park there when they have to take their rest periods. However, the majority of truckers refuel and rest at Autohöfen. These are not located directly on the Autobahn but a few hundred meters behind it. You have to leave the highway to get to them. Here you will also find more showers for truck drivers etc. These rest areas are much better suited to the needs of truck drivers than the smaller rest areas on the highway where fuel is 20% more expensive than at the Autohöfe. Just to explain. And as for your legendary semis, they are dinosaurs compared to the more advanced technology in the rest of the world. You may have more space in your sleepers, but otherwise the handling, comfort, safety and fuel consumption are more than 20 years behind. Search for Bruce Wilson's channel and find out more.

Ultimate Diesel is a ripoff for drivers of high powered BMW, Audi etc. Diesel cars who were led to believe that they need to use "race" fuel. No extra value as all engineers will confirm when asked.

How's that related? No one works in the weekends anyway. There are several reasons why driving trucks is not allowed on Sundays in Germany (not most of Europe). Sunday is a sacred day for Germans. The weekend is also when there's a lot of other traffic. You know, because we actually have vacation days we can use in Europe. Only trucks transporting food and special transports can drive on Sundays.

@412hwc It's funny to Europeans, how much Americans brag about how much they work, and how many jobs they have. In Europe, we appreciate our time off, like vacations, holidays, and weekends. It's also funny to us, how much American workers brag about their missing rights as workers, and their low minimum wage salaries. We wouldn't change our rights for anything. There are still European countries, with higher GDP per capita and/or higher average salaries, than what you have in the US, despite these countries still have all their worker's rights. Even if some countries in Europe have a lower GDP per capita than Americans, don't mean the people there are poor. For example Italy's GDP per capita, is only half of USA. Have you ever seen poor Italians in videos and movies? Have you seen long lines of skid rows and homeless people in Italy? No.

95% low budget Eastern European junk trucks on that rasthof. If you want to see nice European trucks travel to Scandinavia then, or find a rasthof on the A7 where the is better chances to see some fine trucks which drives between Italy and Scandinavia.
