There’s also a Ronald McDonald charity sales area that has opened. Also a business called Conduent. Both businesses occupy the former Macy’s section of the building. Senior housing will be soon built at the Sears end as well as the outer area of the mall.

This place was my childhood. It was opened when i was born. I shopped at those stores. I ate at that food court. I rode that merry go round. My grandmother worked at Bon Ton. I was last in that mall when I was 16-17. I went Christmas shopping with my father. There obviously wasn’t much left open but Macy’s and Sears. I remember stopping in the middle of a crowd of people, taking a quick look around and then crying like a baby. It hurt to see such a large part of my childhood reduced to nothing. It’s bittersweet watching this video now because I work in the Macy’s area now but I’m not allowed to go into the mall. So close yet so far away. Thank you for uploading this.

for a mall that closed in 2009, this building was in incredibly good shape when you guys filmed. most malls that closed in the 2000s got scrapped and vandalized so much that they lost a lot of the vintage feeling. i wish all abandoned places were in as good of shape as this mall to truly keep the feeling of the time it came from instead of glass shards and garbage littering the floors like in other places like rolling acres and randall park.

@enchantedbrick

@@binksmas Then they would not function. Neon is really fragile that's the reason it isn't used as much. There are very special and specific ways to transport it. It's glass tubes with an inert gas (Neon) in it with an electric charge to make the light. Specific power requirements are also needed. Just touching a neon tube with bare hands will cause it to stop functioning because of the oils in human skin. Source: Years ago back in 1997, I called a neon sign company because I wanted some wild designs made. Clearly, out of my price range.

Some of these malls are so big and spacious they could be made into mini-towns. Convert the anchor store spaces into apartment complexes. The smaller stores could be stores, bars, restaurants, offices, medical facilities, entertainment venues (some already have theaters), even educational facilities, libraries, coffee shops, gyms, etc. People could mingle and gather in the open spaces, walk and travel in a climate controlled environment. I'm sure a developer could think of more options to include.

That's really ironic because there's a SUNY college in Rochester, NY (pretty close to this mall) that had a downtown campus in the old Sibley building...aka you were able to ride escalators 4+ stories to get to your classes at the top of an old shopping mall. It was really awful, though, and had too many issues (school was just recently relocated to the old Kodak tower). Just thought you'd like to know (I went there :))

Fabulous idea! Many of the smaller stores are already ideal classroom size & sectioning off anchor stores wouldn't take much work. You could even put a gym in a anchor store location & have a a food court ready to go as a cafeteria. Plenty of walking space & places to study as well. And no need to be parking spot stalker with all those huge lots! Lol

For any viewers wondering, it’s not truly “abandoned”. The mall closed in 2009, but Macy’s didn’t close until 2014 and Sears closed in 2016. It’s guarded quite well as abandoned buildings are attractive nuisances by nature. The site has changed hands a few times in the past decade but renovation plans just keep falling through, especially surrounding monetary issues of a previous owner by the name of Scott Congel. He was a huge source of drama for the Rochester area for several years lmao It sold in January 2016 at public auction for only $100,000 and there are plans as recent as this August to make it into a community center! Feel free to google if you’d like to know more, there’s plenty of news articles on it by local news organizations.

I was squatting in an abandoned Gilly Hicks store at a failing semi-abandoned mall (couldn’t afford to rent at the time). I was able to pick and change the locks of the shop, and I showered off in the fountain after closing, I figured out how to turn it back on. Unfortunately the cops found out about what I (and three other squatters) were doing and drove us out of the abandoned stores. Eventually the mall where we were squatting closed down forever and was demolished.

I remember when that mall opened and I was there the last day it was opened. The gangs had taken it over and became unsafe to be there at all. I was once stuck in a store because of a fight in front of the store I was in. That Disney Store closed years before the mall ever closed. The Sears was the last to close down and was functioning well after the mall closed. It finally closed not too long ago. The area is not the best and more than likely will never have anything done to it. Many plans have come and gone and yet nothing has been done. The reason it looks so nice is that there are a lot of people who look out for the mall and have called the police when they see anything suspicious happening. There is a Target within walking distance from it, so the cameras would pick it up. I loved this mall when it was full of stores, but toward the end there was only Burger King and a few Sneaker stores left.

I miss that mid-late 90's look of malls, growing up with them as a little kid makes me nostalgic to see older malls like this again 😭

Malls are the ghost towns of tomorrow. I really liked the 80s mall soundtrack, and the slider shot segments are so cool. Really worth taking the time to do those on the fly. They looks great!

I love the designers thought to add in plenty of natural lighting. Reminds me of the Sparks Legend Outlet Mall near me (in NV). My cousin and I went to a really old still active mall (Warwick Mall) when I visited her one Christmas and it had barely any windows on the roof at all. Made the place seem so dreary despite all the Xmas decorations.

I am always struck by - what must have been - the hopes and dreams of the individual entrepreneurs. People who tied up and lot of money and time in their mall stores - only to have come to (presumably) a bad end. These malls charged a huge amount of money for rent - and the cost of starting a store in one - any store - must have been enormous. They are probably all working at Walmart now...

My family and i would go to this mall all the time in the 90s n early 2000s when i was a kid and pre teen. Such ashame to see it in such bad condition. Makes me sad, this mall was my childhood. I miss the disney store, rave, time out, debs, new york trends, benzers, the cookie shop, kaufmans, burger king, kids foot locker, going down the escolator to finishline. They also had this light store all the way down by sears and i remember them having this beautiful picture of titanic. I believe it was also a maternity clothes store right next to it. I still remember the smell of that blue elevator when u got inside it and the smell of the water fountain. I loved throwing pennies in it. My cousins and i would catch the bus there all the time when that steve n barrys store was open. This mall holds so many precious memories ill never forget😢❤.
