This story was fascinating to experience and I’m so grateful to have randomly met Dave and Tess on the street. They really helped introduce this hidden slice of America that is virtually unknown to both Americans and the outside world. I’d love to hear your thoughts on Appalachian culture and McDowell County overall - I’ll be glued to my computer, reading and responding to as many of your comments as I can. Love you all and stay tuned for another story in the U.S. next week 🇺🇸🙏🏼

so much greenery could make for great gentrified tourism resorts with those vintage houses and train rides. why don't hipsters move there? are the so called "hill billies" aggressive or thieving? We have dead villages like these in East Europe as well, and they don't get gentrified because the natives are horrendous. alcoholic thieving lunatics. Plus corruption, setting up a legit BnB is a nightmare, and middle class with spare income won't go to those areas because they're afraid of getting mugged.

My dad's best friend had a similar story, in the 40s. He was 14 when he got sent down the mine in Cape Breton. That night, he wrapped his meager possessions in a rag, climbed out the window, and fled to the city. He got a job working for the railroad with my father; dad was 17 and from the city. They both dreamt of a life on the road, but dad ended up staying in a regular job. Johnny went on to buy his own big rig, and was a very successful owner/operator. I've been to 27 states, and WV is the most beautiful. We got off the I-95, and spent hours driving through those mountains. The people were lovely. ~ from Canada's Appalachia in Nova Scotia x

@pilotintraining274 ай бұрын
The dart landed in Chicago. She met my grandfather in Chicago, where for a few weeks, they lived out of a motel on nothing but Hershey chocolate bars (not sure why, but that's the story I was told.) They lived in Chicago for over 50 years. They raised race horses, worked various jobs, and opened a hotdog restaurant called Weedee's. They made national news when Kellogg sued them for the name, saying it sounded too similar to Wheaties (the cereal). My grandfather won the lawsuit. After their long life in Chicago, they moved to Missouri to be in my grandfathers homeland during retirement. My grandfather recently passed, and I now have a tattoo of his most successful racehorse and his favorite ring. Now we have the full story of the daughter of a West Virginia coal miner 🤣
