My Book, JUST GO, is out! Grab it here on Amazon! rb.gy/phjsc0
This is a story I've been wanting to tell for a long time - West Virginia. Appalachian accents. Southern hospitality.
I spent 24 hours driving alone through America's poorest region, called McDowell County. It's a place where the minimum household income is less than $29,000 USD, and where ghost towns have been left behind in the aftermath of a booming coal industry.
In many respects, this is the forgotten America-a place where time has seemingly stood still. Yet, the narratives you’ll encounter here are among the most compelling I’ve ever told, anywhere in the world.
I've been telling travel stories since 2017 - more than 1,200 videos - and about 97% of them have been overseas. But now I'm beginning to realize that the most captivating ones are right here, in my own backyard.
Thank you for watching this story - and a special shoutout to Dave and Tess who spontaneously joined me to help bring this West Virginia story to life. I can't wait to help get them a passport and take them on their first international trip soon! Where should we go?!

This story was fascinating to experience and I’m so grateful to have randomly met Dave and Tess on the street. They really helped introduce this hidden slice of America that is virtually unknown to both Americans and the outside world. I’d love to hear your thoughts on Appalachian culture and McDowell County overall - I’ll be glued to my computer, reading and responding to as many of your comments as I can. Love you all and stay tuned for another story in the U.S. next week 🇺🇸🙏🏼

My grandmother would have been 98. She grew up there. I've heard many sad stories. I bet our grandmother's knew each other. Her dad, my great grandfather, was a coal miner, an engineer, a church of God pastor, and even had to sell moonshine to get by. She said that she was teased a lot for being poor. If she only knew they all were poor.

As a French man who spent 4 years in univeristy in small town university in West Virginia I can say that this place will always have a piece of my heart. Despite all the challenges this part of the US has faced and is currently facing, there is something about WV that is magical. Stunning nature, frozend waterfalls, beautiful trails and very friendly people. Wish more was done to reintegrate local communities into a healthy and functioning life cycle. I witnessed very closely the effects of the opioid epidemic and cannot believe that the big pharmaceutical companies that are responsible for it are still operating. Will always consider this place my second home and get into my feelings when I hear "country roads, take me home, to the place, I belong". Much love

The dart landed in Chicago. She met my grandfather in Chicago, where for a few weeks, they lived out of a motel on nothing but Hershey chocolate bars (not sure why, but that's the story I was told.) They lived in Chicago for over 50 years. They raised race horses, worked various jobs, and opened a hotdog restaurant called Weedee's. They made national news when Kellogg sued them for the name, saying it sounded too similar to Wheaties (the cereal). My grandfather won the lawsuit. After their long life in Chicago, they moved to Missouri to be in my grandfathers homeland during retirement. My grandfather recently passed, and I now have a tattoo of his most successful racehorse and his favorite ring. Now we have the full story of the daughter of a West Virginia coal miner 🤣

Back in 2013 and 2014, I was an “outsider” working in oil and gas construction in WV. I worked in some hollers that were so far back in the hills, you’d have to pipe sunshine in. Let me tell you, those people were standoffish at first, but once they got to know you, they would give you the shirt off their back if you needed it. so much greenery could make for great gentrified tourism resorts with those vintage houses and train rides. why don't hipsters move there? are the so called "hill billies" aggressive or thieving? We have dead villages like these in East Europe as well, and they don't get gentrified because the natives are horrendous. alcoholic thieving lunatics. Plus corruption, setting up a legit BnB is a nightmare, and middle class with spare income won't go to those areas because they're afraid of getting mugged.

My dad's best friend had a similar story, in the 40s. He was 14 when he got sent down the mine in Cape Breton. That night, he wrapped his meager possessions in a rag, climbed out the window, and fled to the city. He got a job working for the railroad with my father; dad was 17 and from the city. They both dreamt of a life on the road, but dad ended up staying in a regular job. Johnny went on to buy his own big rig, and was a very successful owner/operator. I've been to 27 states, and WV is the most beautiful. We got off the I-95, and spent hours driving through those mountains. The people were lovely. ~ from Canada's Appalachia in Nova Scotia x

Thank you for being so kind to West Virginians you met. This is the first documentary I’ve seen that doesn’t just go to the “towns” and say that there’s no one there. Great job
