How beautiful this home must have been in its glory, still is. Sad to see such ruination. The destruction of the crypt is horrible, so much for resting in peace.

I went there yesterday, amazing architecture and those stairs were pretty sketchy. I spent an hour just exploring the building never knew there was a crypt there, it's a stunning building and there is still tiles there.

why would someone feel the need to drag coffins out of their crypts and toss the bones around? Grave robbers? That one skull is beautifully preserved though and oddly white compared to the other bones in the crypt. And that ruin. It's a shame it's in that state, such beautiful architecture

I once had to examine a long forgotten vault in our village churchyard, discovered by the churchwarden putting his foot through the roof! That had been robbed, the coffin smashed open and the corpu dilectii's fingers slashed off to release their rings. Sad. The dead won't hurt you, though. Its the living you have to worry about.

i can only imagine people standing on that staircase in those beautiful gowns they wore back then, all the servants and butlers living in that castle. That would be amazing!! Its so sad to see bones just left like that. My dad has died and i try to not think of him in the ground that way but how i remember him alive.

Great video. Went to the priory and crypt often when my boys were young but never inside the crypt. It is a shame that someone has prized open the lead coffins. Here is a bit of extra detail : A TALE OF TWO SISTERS (AND ONE GHOST). Lady Mary Lindsay-Crawford, 1760-1833, was considered eccentric in her lifetime. She never married, preferring the company of a menagerie of animals, including a pet deer that followed her everywhere. She was generous to her tenants and left the welfare of her animals provided for in her will. Her most striking legacy is the brooding ruin of her Gothic mansion, Crawford Priory by Cupar in Fife. In the nearby woods is a Roman temple, slowly returning to nature, which is her decaying mausoleum. Visitors to the ruined Priory have reported hearing Lady Mary’s butler and seeing her Ladyship haunting her beloved grounds. Yet was Lady Mary’s choice to remain fiercely independent influenced by the fate of her sister Jean? In 1772 when Mary was 12, the beautiful and vivacious 15 year old Jean was married to Major General Archibald Montgomerie, a 46 year old who had never been wed before. Montgomerie had been a soldier for 33 years and he had witnessed some dark moments in his military career, including leading a campaign of livestock, crop, home and inhabitant destruction in the 1760 Cherokee War and two years earlier he had come across the severed heads of 30 of his 77th Regiment outside Fort Duquesne (now Pittsburgh) following their capture by native allies of the French. Now I have no direct knowledge of Lady Jean and General Montgomerie’s marriage but it is not difficult to imagine they may have had some challenges and by the age of 21, Jean was dead. Perhaps her sister’s fate was influential in Lady Mary’s life choices. Crawford Priory was a favourite ruin to explore for me and my boys and we even took a torch to shine through a crack in the masonry of the mausoleum. As the torchlight shone upon the tomb, I asked Lady Mary if Jean’s short life shaped her decision to remain single but Lady Mary did not answer. Or, perhaps, as I have been inspired to write this obscure post, she did.

@MartinDey Fife, Scotland what a beautiful place with great people. Having friends in Cupar I jumped at the chance to spend a good few months there a few years ago. Bit of a change of scenery after living in S.Yorkshire all my life! So many ruined castles and interesting abandoned buildings with little to no knowledge of the history even from the locals! One thing that was mentioned many times was that Cupar was the armpit of Fife even Scotland for many of them! Still worth a visit.

Thank you so much for this delightful inside in her paradise-like life! Imagine having a mansion with tame wild animals and a pet deer following one all the time since it was a fawn with it´s cute little face and cute always aware fluffy ears - that is like a real Disney movie!! No wonder she and her butler are still wandering these halls, I would never leave paradise either ;D Legends say one can also hear the ghostly fawn calling for her at night.

I believe this place was built in the mid 1700's ,,, in the mid 1800's the house was owned by the Earls of Glasgow. I don't believe that this house was last inhabited in 1968 ,,, not unless it was in a hell of a state of disrepair at that time. At one time the crypt housed nine bodies some dating back to the late 1700's. So it really is a mystery, were the bodies removed for reburial ? or were grave robbers ( resurrectionists ) somehow involved ? ,,,, very interesting place, thanks for posting the video ,,

It's so well preserved it looks fake like a Hollywood set. It's horrible some people feel the need to vandalize it. Its so well preserved it almost looks like it's from the late 19th century only. Absolutely beautiful though. Amazing that with all the vandalism the random skull would still be sitting out in the open and still look like the place has been dusted and cleaned. Awesome video though great adventures

Trouble is millionaires would turn them into modern monstrosities instead of sympathetically restoring them. As due to UK planning law it costs more to restore a building than to flatten it and rebuild. Given half a chance I'd belong to every preservation society in the land.

This mansion is THAT AWESOME!!! (And of course the skeletons in the basement are the secret eerie highlight.) A real Disney princess lived her, but sadly the Ghetto-filth has not even respect before such an amazing old baroque heritage having sprayed their gang-shit on all walls everywhere. The tower at 6:36 is absolute impressive, do you think it was that bright and friendly while this mansion was still intact, with big (maybe colourful) glass windows similar to a church and maybe even a glass roof? Imagine how often Lady Mary and her favorite tame deer has wandered these stairs to enjoy the forest and sounds of endless nature all around up there..... Too bad you haven´t climbed these stairs maybe there is a real observation roof like an old medieval castle-tower up there. But there is one unsettling detail: Why does a lonely lady, not married and no family, needs that many tombs in her basement? Maybe she had a lot of male visitors and all of them where only seen walking in but no one was never leaving ;)
