This ornate mansion was built over a 100 years ago and was later bought by Rev. Carl Stevens, leader of the Christianity group The Bible Speaks. Stevens was known to have stolen over 5 million dollars from his followers over the years as well as bankrupt and ruin lives. The property we will be exploring is one of his conpounds buildings. After lawsuits and his name in the news, Stevens then fled town, moving to Baltimore with some remaining followers, he stayed there until he passed away.

I’ve been reading a lot of people’s comments on here and wanted to share something I have discovered over the years. As an example, there is a beautiful mansion for sale in Meriden Connecticut which is only about 45 minutes from where I live. It is 6800 square feet on 7 acres. The property also features a caretakers cottage (which is 2500 square feet), and an in ground pool and pool house. I can purchase the property for around $650k. It probably needs another 500k to properly restore it. All that part is okay. Here is where the rub comes in, the annual property taxes are close to $38,000 per year. That would be a big chunk of my salary every year. Heating and cooling a home this size is also costly. These are just a couple of reasons why many of these mansions are not taken on by most people. It would be great if cities would provide a tax break for people who buy and restore one of these historical homes with the understanding that they actually want to preserve and live in it.

They won't give anyone buying a home a tax break because they are giving tax breaks to the 1% (the wealthiest) and the owners of the franchises that make hundreds of millions a year and even billions a year. It's sad that someone couldn't get a tax break for saving these beautiful old homes.

The machine in the basement is a paper cutter. It was located in a different building on the property years ago. I operated that machine as an employee of the Bible Speaks back in the late 70's, and it's quite a surprise to see it. I still have a scar on my hand caused by my carelessnes with the blade. Carl Stevens office was not on the second floor but on the first floor in front, to the left when entering the front door. I remember meeting with Stevens in his office. I had to laugh at the description of Stevens preaching from the window to the crowds out back, never happened. Sadly, people look at everything as black and white, so while there is truth here, much of the history presented is very distorted. I knew Stevens personally, worked in their print shop and graduated from the Bible School, got married and had our first child there. I left the organization on bad terms, but the description of all the HORRIBLE things going on here is very exaggerated. I wish there was a way for me to communicate the truth of the reality here (as I know it) but it's way too complicated and would require writing a book to share my views. I was also involved with the music, playing piano at all services with other musicians, several of which had studied at Berklee College of Music. I have both good and bad memories, but have never regretted my time there as it was a great life-learning experience with a lot of wonderful people. While it was cult-like, I would never describe it as a cult. The historical description here completely obliterated it's history as a school prior to the Bible Speaks. By the way, Carl Stevens could have lived in this mansion but he chose to live in a much more humble brick apartment building on the campus. While I had my own personal issues with the man, I believe he was originally sincere but corrupted by power, not money. I also lived in Venfort Hall, around the corner on Walker Street for a few years.

LOVED the historical clips. That staircase though! Makes me sad. Places like this should be restored and preserved, despite their dark history. As you said, the workmanship, detail, and quality of houses (in this case, mansions) of bygone eras speak to the high value placed on hard work, high quality craftsmanship, beauty, art and design. I wish we could return to those standards of build. Sigh. Great job on covering this story, I had never heard of this "Christian" cult con artist before. That Jammin John toilet lid is a trip, ha! 🎸🚽

The bedroom with floral designs was most likely a Nursery. The crib was most likely placed on the wall under the design. The oddly shaped small rooms on the third floor were originally servants quarters. The kitchen appliances were most likely removed as it was no longer used as a residential building. Great video! Thanks!
@Dutchmonkey1
@Dutchmonkey1 Жыл бұрын
That “secret staircase” in the yellow room is actually the servants’ stairs. The house had at least 4 owners after the disgraced “Reverend” Stevens had to give it up, so it is unlikely that any remnants currently in the house belonged to him or his college for the 11 years they had it. The name of the house is Spring Lawn and was designed by the famous Boston-born architect Guy Lowell. It was built for John E. Alexandre, and was later sold to the Schermerhorn family (who re-named it Schermeer!). In 1957 it was deeded to the Lenox School, and the Bible Speaks College had possession from 1976, until they were sued by Betsy Dovydenas, to whom the property was conveyed in 1987. It was then owned by the National Music Foundation until 1993, then Shakespeare & Company until 2005, when it was purchased by James C. Journey, Sr.

OP is correct. I’m a security guard (not the same as a Peace Officer!) And in Training you learn the different between Trespass and criminal trespass. If you see someone whom is unauthorized on the private property, and warn them that they are trespassing on private property and they heed your warning, they are not trespassing. But, if they refuse, they can be arrested and charged with trespassing. It would now be obvious that they are knowingly breaking the law and trespassing. It is a misdemeanor, so they may not be arrested. The issue with concluding that you may think they know that they are trespassing, is simply, you just don’t know. Objective facts are what the court is looking for, not conclusions.

I actually had a room mate in NYC that got completely taken in by this guy. He convinced his mother to sell her house and move there too. This was in 1979. He was a talented comedian who's life went completely off the rails in this cult. There were various others in Broadway shows that gave up their careers for this bozo too. It is a good lesson on how vulnerable creative people really are. I think the mansion is in very good taste for 1904. The staircase is a masterpiece of craftsmanship. The sweep of the staircase, the carved balustrade with oval openings and inlaid rosettes, all very difficult to produce. The house demonstrates a restraint for that era. It's artistically too fine to forever be associated with this cult. I suspect it's in a less than desirable area to be abandoned like that. It's a shame.

That staircase! 😍 So I'm not totally sure what era the high c can is from but I guessing it's from either the '70s or the '80s. The reason why I guess that is because I remember when I was a young child in the early 80s, High C used to come in a can exactly like that and it was actually in the Frozen section. And it would come in a frozen cylinder brick that you would then mix with water after thawing it out. It looked a little different in the '80s so that's why I said maybe it's from the '70s cuz the design on the can looks a little older. Just my guess though I'm no expert. Lol

This mansion is gorgeous. Traditional, pre-World War II architecture, building materials, and craftsmanship are my favorite. I would love for more buildings today to be built using traditional architecture, building materials, and craftsmanship instead of conforming to the often ugly architecture, lackluster building materials, and mediocre craftsmanship that are prevalent today. If you are in a position to design or build a building, consider using traditional architecture, building materials, and craftsmanship if at all possible as they are more beautiful, higher quality, and more durable than their modern counterparts. On another note, I hate it when con artists use God and/or religion as a pretext for their abusive, deceptive, fraudulent, extortive, and bad actions. God doesn’t expect one to mindlessly submit to a corrupt religious leader in order to believe in or have a relationship with Him.

You can see how glazed over their eyes are in the old 80’s video. At that point, they will empty the bank account. So sad that people can be so hypnotized 😵‍💫.

What a stunner! They just dont make em like they used to! I would have to think that that place was probably wired for electricity. it would have been cutting edge technology back then but a place like this would have that kind of innovations built into it. It was probably something it showed off proudly. i would love to know the full history of this house because the corrupt cult leader only came in the final decades. Who built it and who owned it. I love old home histories! Thanks for sharing this incredible home. Sad it falls to these conditions over time. Hopefully it can be restored and saved. What a waste otherwise! These buildings are our tangible past. I think that people are going to come to regret letting places like this fall to ruin!

In the era this was built the third floor (or the uppermost floors) was designed to house the nursery, bedrooms for staff-governesses, butlers, maids (upstairs, downstairs, parlor, scullery, chamber, housekeeper, etc.), and storage for commonly used items that didn’t get stored in attics. During the 1970s/1980s when Rev. Stevens was there the third floor was indeed most likely used for meetings, administrivia, classes, and perhaps some live-in housekeeping staff, several to a room.

It's like the mansion needs a care giver. It's going to waste. I loved the stair cases n fire place. It's sad that all that beauty is going to waste. Thanks for sharing. Patti Ratcliffe from Southern Illinois ☺️♥️

So true, they don’t build homes with that amount of craftsmanship. The wood and carvings and paintings, they have stood the time and elements. Thank you for exploring and exposing this lost beauty. At 13:30, my grandmother had a sewing machine that also went inside and it turned into a table. 19:45, might have been a dumbwaiter.

@@rebeccagable9629 Yep, and in the front of that table was a little drawer that opened up, I remember that when I was a kid, because my grandmother would say Jon get out of there and stop messing with it, you'll break it.

On the second floor, I think the cutout with the orange drink is a dumb waiter (I saw a weight hanging on the right hand side. On the third floor, before it was redesigned by the preacher perp, the rooms would have served as bedrooms for the live-in help. Great video!

23:13 ´a little dining table for one person’ lol 😆 Cute. It’s actually a telephone table for a landline phone. The table is for the phone but doubles as a desk. You’d need a place for the phone to sit, but also a place to take notes and look up numbers. So, the shelves are for phone books (number directory, like a book of all local businesses and residences) or a Rolodex (a spinning card holder for one’s personal or business numbers and contacts) usually paper, pens and stationary for writing letters would be found here, as well. Those attic rooms would likely have been guest rooms, servants quarters, and a nursery, when the house was built. Later on, it became his office space. The big office might’ve been the (head) housekeeper’s or butler’s suite, or a Mother-in-law suite, before that. I think the ´little cabinet’ you found the Hi-C drink in was actually a dumbwaiter - but I’d probably have to see it up close. It might’ve been a telephone closet, accessible from either side and shared communication between two rooms. As for the drink can, it’s probably from the 80’s. The machinery in the basement appears to be a type of printing press or jobbing press. I looked up the company Chandler and Price and they are defunct now, but that’s exactly what they made - from the late 1880’s. So, either it belonged to the original owner of the house or it was used by the Reverend. He might’ve been printing his own books and biblical literature. It looks like he was doing a few small businesses, as the sewing machines are hefty commercial style. Maybe they had merch or made book bindings, or they might’ve made clothing - who knows? They also had an accounting office, so they must’ve been selling something. It would definitely make sense if they diversified their business beyond the support from the parishioners. Considering how they lived, and running such an organization, it would have been smart. Messed up, but all organized religion has historically been fraudulent with collecting funds.

This was built in the early nineteen-hundreds with all these houses on it. It couldn't be servants quarters, since there's so many of them and would have been quite large at the time for servants that usually lived in a separate area in the home. So what were they for? I'm curious about the original history as well if you find out please let us know. I'm going to try to do some research

I personally could not fill this entire house up with furniture. Well, I could if it was mine but I would choose not to. I would leave it almost completely empty just to sit probably on a small settee in the middle of a room just to take in all of the molding and architecture of the house. I usually find that and think that when a house is all filled up with furniture, You cannot appreciate all of the architecture or the Natural hardwood floors all of the work from hundreds of years ago. I Love the smell of an old home, an old attic. And when one fills it up with furniture furnishings, it takes away from all of that.

Out in California they sell stucco and glass boxes this big for millions. This house is beautiful. The most beautiful architecture in the U.S. is east of the Mississippi. We have some quality older places out in Cali but most have been replaced by stucco or glass boxes starting in the 1960s.

The intricate details of that mansion are really beautiful and adorned in very good taste. But would be good to wear a mask since lead was in the paint then, and it’s chipped off and likely in the air when you move around or if a breeze passes through. But seriously as a Christian minister myself who has spent her life giving and never taking, it really grieves my soul to see how many of those fraudulent opportunistic liars have ravaged Church. They are the wolves in sheep‘s clothing that Jesus warned about. I’ve never understood why people would follow them he’ll give them a red penny.
