You can see that Josh’s idea of treasure is a lot different than Alex’s. Alex looks for resale value and Josh looks at utility and possible art applications. Cool juxtaposition.

I love Alex's "eye" for collectibles. But my interests lean toward Josh's. I would go for tools that I need. Alex goes for treasure (Red Line Hot Wheels). Josh goes for upgrades. One thing that kind of bugs me is, for some weird reason, Alex's one-handed sorting. I wish there were a way for him to go two-handed. Maybe a gimbal mounted on his head? I dunno. I also don't know why it frustrates me so. Anybody else feel that way?

Some "hoarders" aren't actually hoarding, they just got old and/or disabled, lost the ability to lift, pull, push, to clean anything really. Occasionally they make a huge effort to take the first step toward cleaning which is to acquire cleaning tools/supplies which exhausts them so it all stops there in another pile. Also, relatives or friends will try to help and as far as they get is to dump off some cleaning supplies. Getting old is not for the faint of heart. Curiosity, Inc. handles this situation like royalty. A true public service, glad you make money on it. I enjoy your channel, it's relaxing to see it all tidied up. P.S., find out what to do for your back, don't delay on that.

@@tardigrade9493 many hoarders hoard worthless items, paper, trash, they literally seek out trash they find trash and store it. Not all hoarders are wealthy and shop for hoarding, then cannot let anything go that comes into the house and they constantly keep everything, even garbage.

@@bevandarke2300 ‘Judge not lest ye be judged!’ This woman never had kids but seemed to have 2 inns for sure....money and a petite figure...she was addicted to shopping for clothes and bought her whole life long until her house was full. Her husband seemed to do the same with musical instruments, sheets of music, tools, and coins. They became old, he died, and she likely was sick, weak and overwhelmed and mentally unable to decide how to dig out of that mess. People judge, but hoarding is a sickness like anorexia, obsessive -compulsive disorders, drug addictions. I think her situation came about from a combination of things. We don’t have the right to judge someone without knowing all the back story which Alex will give us.

Your advice for people to not let their house get this way is well taken. I’m moving into my late 60s and I can tell that having much fewer things makes a house easier to manage. The person I know in this situation cannot foresee that the stuff he has acquired, the projects he plans and buys stuff for, is not going to happen. He's on the threshold of being elderly, has back trouble, never really feels up to doing anything. And for twenty years has packed the house with so much stuff that he couldn't do one of the projects if he suddenly got serious about getting it done. You need to recognize that energy and lifespan are limited, and plan for that ahead of time. It's not enough to have a 401K. Everyone in the household has one place to sit, and they haven't eaten a meal together for twenty years because of the hoarding. No horizontal surface is ever clear, anyway.

Hello. Cat-lover here and rescuer of animals who have been abandoned. Cats are very clean animals. They also lower blood pressure and bring comfort. I have been obsessed with the Hoarders shows and only recently discovered Curiosity Inc. The title of the series about cleaning out the hoarders house caught my attention and now I'm obsessed with this too! I am also a cat lover with 2 indoor cats whose litter box gets scooped at least twice a day. What really bothers me about the true hoarders is that if I see a cat I almost want to quit watching. In those instances they almost always find at least one dead cat in the house. How does it get to the point where someone doesn't notice a dead cat in the house with them, really?
@therealJamieJoy
@therealJamieJoy 4 жыл бұрын
@@carolepulliam3641 there is a sub-category of hoarding that is animal hoarding. It's a similar pathology. Many hoarders save trash because they find it to be valuable as if "they saved it from the dump" same with animals. It is a severe mental illness, and very sad for all involved, especially the animals.

Unfortunately I think many hoarders don't have a grasp on reality. Many don't even realise that it's not normal to live the way they do. They believe everything they own is treasure and worth money. I'm shocked how many times hoarders say they want to have yard sales on these hoarders shows. Its really really sad. My house is a little cluttered for my liking. Whenever I watch Hoarders on TV it motivates me to look for things in my home to throw away or donate 🤣.

The toys and children's things seemed the same vintage as my kids, the kids would be about 20 now, probably grandkids. This house makes me so sad. There really needs to be a better welfare check system in place for the elderly, especially after the death of a spouse. Depression, combined with a lack of mobility, and anyone could end up in a situation like that. That house wasn't hoarded, it was a cry for help and it breaks my heart.

Efforts by others to clean up the mess was fruitless, as the individual would quickly return it back to the original disfunctional state. My in-laws were married just at the end of the great depression. They kept everything they had ever purchased working or not with the box included if it had one . There was an entire closet of shopping bags. All of the cancelled checks and if it was a substantial purchase the sales slip . Yes they were hoarders but clean tidy hoarders ha! It has taken me years to sort these things . We lived in their house for ten years .. When we moved and sold the place there were still six storage buildings .. Believe me ... I understand. Trying to give away my piano now .. 😕

Even a piece of ribbon or string was valuable If you needed something for a dress you were making and didn't have money for purchasing .. People used fertilizer sacks for sheets and flour sacks to make they're clothes . My grandmother work for the county teaching people how to preserve food during that time. My mother said she work for 25 cents a day and that was probably a lot of money for the time . My husband's uncle 96 years old now was a teenager. Boys his age would leave home and go what they called hoboing because their parents couldn't afford to feed them. They would travel around and look for odd jobs to earn a meal . Don't _ever_ tell your children it's a sin to waste anything. I have known two people in my life who couldn't throw anything away, one who saved his junk mail in Xerox boxes stacked up with pathways in between and one who brought his junk over to my house because he just couldn't bear to put it in the trash. The former actually told me his mother had told him the sin business. This behavior starts young.

I know a person with the opposite - his mother would regularly go through his things and throw/give away items she didn't deem necessary to keep without discussing it with him at all. He'd come home from school and find a special drawing or toy was just gone. It gave him a ton of issues around acquiring multiples of the same thing and anxiety around people touching his things.

Note: NOT talking about hoarding, talking about some other reasons that household garbage piles up. A big problem is that in the last decade or so city refuge collection services across the USA have gotten really finicky. They won't pick up anything that won't fit in the regulation trash bins that you have to rent from the city, and they absolutely will not pick up hazardous waste like cans of old paint. So what are you supposed to do with a broken chair? Or old cans of paint? Especially if you're old and just dragging it to the curb would be a huge effort? For example, in downstate Illinois, although they refuse hazardous waste, you can schedule and pay for trash collection of items that won't fit in the bin that you rent. I already pay $62.02/month for the city to pickup one old person's trash (me) once a week, and for the city to let the old water and sewer pipes continue to run. What a racket, and this results in a dirty city. People's piles of furniture stand on curbs in front of their houses for weeks/months. Hope to move soon, especially as rats and mice live in those long-standing piles of junk, and all sorts of vermin in the mess inside people's houses that they can't get rid of. The city sees trash pickup as revenue generation, above and beyond the substantial taxes we pay, when the city should see it as maintaining clean, healthy neighborhoods. Shouldn't cost anything beyond my taxes. Frustrating, for example, I inherited many gallons of old paint and tins of thinner, etc. when my parents and their siblings died, and now I can't find a way to dispose of what used to be household waste and now is "hazardous" waste. If house paint is hazardous, then they better get busy and manufacture non-hazardous house paint.

It's tough to see a loved one with this problem. My mom grew up in an orphanage and had to move in with my brother for health reasons. I had to clean out her house. She would ask where certain things were and I would lie and say that they were in storage. She had every magazine that was ever brought into her house. She never had much money but she raised us 4 kids by herself. Now both my brothers have the problem and my sister only a little bit. I don't have it and gave away a lot of stuff I accumulated over the years.

Had the same problem with a Kirby salesperson. She was a backpacker from overseas earning a few dollars selling door-to-door for them, so she couldn't actually sign any paperwork. The only way I could get her to leave was to agree to buy. I rang the next day to cancel (well within the cooling off period required by law), so that she wouldn't come back with someone who could sign the paperwork. But they still turned up the day after I cancelled and were really rude when I told them I'd cancelled. Eventually they left, but it was a most unpleasant experience.
