Some "hoarders" aren't actually hoarding, they just got old and/or disabled, lost the ability to lift, pull, push, to clean anything really. Occasionally they make a huge effort to take the first step toward cleaning which is to acquire cleaning tools/supplies which exhausts them so it all stops there in another pile. Also, relatives or friends will try to help and as far as they get is to dump off some cleaning supplies. Getting old is not for the faint of heart. Curiosity, Inc. handles this situation like royalty. A true public service, glad you make money on it. I enjoy your channel, it's relaxing to see it all tidied up. The person I know in this situation cannot foresee that the stuff he has acquired, the projects he plans and buys stuff for, is not going to happen. He's on the threshold of being elderly, has back trouble, never really feels up to doing anything. And for twenty years has packed the house with so much stuff that he couldn't do one of the projects if he suddenly got serious about getting it done. You need to recognize that energy and lifespan are limited, and plan for that ahead of time. It's not enough to have a 401K. Everyone in the household has one place to sit, and they haven't eaten a meal together for twenty years because of the hoarding. No horizontal surface is ever clear, anyway.

The title of the series about cleaning out the hoarders house caught my attention and now I'm obsessed with this too! Here's a thought...many people that are not hoarders have cats too. This was probably a normal person who's house got away from them when they got old and ill. Cats are wonderful companions and I've never had to find something to get rid of my cats. I have dogs too and love all animals (except cockroaches and scorpions!)
@audrab274 жыл бұрын
Ummmm not all cats I am quite sure mine are plotting to kill me as they sit on their cat tree looking at me like I'll set u a blaze. I'm also thinking it's quite possible they are waiting on which one can hold a 🔪 first.

@@audrab27 Well, we'll never know will we! Until that actually happens I'll think of them as great companions (though I did try to teach them to make me dinner but I somehow find myself serving them day after day... perhaps some kind of mind control?)

Thanks for sharing, Alexander! I have to believe when you say that’s house is a walk away house! Of course, I was hoping that you’ll find some hidden treasures to make the trip worth your while, like finding stuff under the bed and such! But, your health is more valuable than any finds, so, walk away, indeed! Stay healthy!

Don't _ever_ tell your children it's a sin to waste anything. I have known two people in my life who couldn't throw anything away, one who saved his junk mail in Xerox boxes stacked up with pathways in between and one who brought his junk over to my house because he just couldn't bear to put it in the trash. The former actually told me his mother had told him the sin business. This behavior starts young.
@Hawther4 жыл бұрын
I know a person with the opposite - his mother would regularly go through his things and throw/give away items she didn't deem necessary to keep without discussing it with him at all. He'd come home from school and find a special drawing or toy was just gone. It gave him a ton of issues around acquiring multiples of the same thing and anxiety around people touching his things.

Note: NOT talking about hoarding, talking about some other reasons that household garbage piles up. A big problem is that in the last decade or so city refuge collection services across the USA have gotten really finicky. They won't pick up anything that won't fit in the regulation trash bins that you have to rent from the city, and they absolutely will not pick up hazardous waste like cans of old paint. So what are you supposed to do with a broken chair? Or old cans of paint? Especially if you're old and just dragging it to the curb would be a huge effort? For example, in downstate Illinois, although they refuse hazardous waste, you can schedule and pay for trash collection of items that won't fit in the bin that you rent. I already pay $62.02/month for the city to pickup one old person's trash (me) once a week, and for the city to let the old water and sewer pipes continue to run. What a racket, and this results in a dirty city. People's piles of furniture stand on curbs in front of their houses for weeks/months. Hope to move soon, especially as rats and mice live in those long-standing piles of junk, and all sorts of vermin in the mess inside people's houses that they can't get rid of. The city sees trash pickup as revenue generation, above and beyond the substantial taxes we pay, when the city should see it as maintaining clean, healthy neighborhoods. Shouldn't cost anything beyond my taxes. Frustrating, for example, I inherited many gallons of old paint and tins of thinner, etc. when my parents and their siblings died, and now I can't find a way to dispose of what used to be household waste and now is "hazardous" waste. If house paint is hazardous, then they better get busy and manufacture non-hazardous house paint.

It's tough to see a loved one with this problem. My mom grew up in an orphanage and had to move in with my brother for health reasons. I had to clean out her house. She would ask where certain things were and I would lie and say that they were in storage. She had every magazine that was ever brought into her house. She never had much money but she raised us 4 kids by herself. Now both my brothers have the problem and my sister only a little bit. I don't have it and gave away a lot of stuff I accumulated over the years.

Had the same problem with a Kirby salesperson. She was a backpacker from overseas earning a few dollars selling door-to-door for them, so she couldn't actually sign any paperwork. The only way I could get her to leave was to agree to buy. I rang the next day to cancel (well within the cooling off period required by law), so that she wouldn't come back with someone who could sign the paperwork. But they still turned up the day after I cancelled and were really rude when I told them I'd cancelled. Eventually they left, but it was a most unpleasant experience.

My mother-in-laws garage looks like this one, she’s never been an overly tidy person, but it got out of control after she had cancer and lost some of her mobility, it’s so upsetting. Thankfully the house isn’t bad it’s just the garage. I know we will have to deal with it eventually. Right now we live in the states and she’s in Canada so it won’t be happening until this pandemic is over. Maybe we should give you a call Alex 😆

@@pattiwhite9575 I feel for you! My parents are definitely hoarders, neither of them seems to be able to leave the house without buying something useless, or something on clearance. Usually, my dad has to buy duplicate tools because he can't find his old ones. When they moved in 2012, they didn't even pack properly and in a box from the computer room, I literally found photos, trash, games, cookbooks, kitchen towels, and a bag of almonds. My dad lives on a 'farm' so that is a horror show in itself, and my mom moved in with me so I could care for her. I have spent the last 8 years going through just the boxes of stuff that came with her and getting rid of everything I could. I have panic attacks when I think of tackling the farm!

I think that is the case many times. We try to slap a hoarding label on things but sometimes it has more to do with age, mobility and/ or physical illness. I had to undergo medical treatments and taking the trash out was a struggle. Then things piled up. Took a while to get it right again.

Years ago we moved from our 3,500 sq. ft home to relocate overseas, and let me say, there was plenty of surplus "stuff". I had more tools than Josh could shake a welder at, all high quality name brands. As the date approached to leave, I offered everything to friends and family, but with no takers. After waiting weeks for people who wanted to "stop by", I loaded it all up in two truck loads and donated it to Habitat for Humanity. They said it was the best stuff they had ever gotten. You can't take it with you, folks.
