As an Icelander I have to correct a few things. This house is from around 1900 and families have lived there. That is not uncommon for hikers or others to use these abandon houses for shelters. The "heat' now comes from the turf cause that is excellent insulation. We used to live in turf house but they are mostly gone today. This house has been restorted at one point, but probably long time ago. The Orange pipe was probably attached to the "firestove" and then the heat travelled up to the bedrooms. The beds on the second floor were made for adults back in the Day. Not uncommon for more than one person to share them. By the way....viking houses were much bigger than this and mostly from wood.

Its not a furnace but a oil stove that is use to cook a meal it was Use in the 50s 60s 70s 80s around that time You fill up a round glass bottle that was made for the stove with oil put the cap back on the cap had a spring on it so when the bottle is turn up side down the oil will slowly flow to the burner of the stove then the wick of the Stove you saw will get wet once the wick is wet then you lite the stove with a match and with the stove handle nob the person can a just the flame to high for cooking but can turn the fire down to low so maybe the rice or grits or soup don't burn while the food is finish cooking, I Grow up with my mother using oil stove they also comes in two burner. Hope this answer your question about not being a Furnace but a oil stove to cook a meal on.

The house was warm, because of the way it was built. Which is also the reason they built them the way they did. The rock, earth, and turf is insulation from the cold and wind. And even though it might be freezing outside, the earth soaks up the heat from the light/sun and holds it in, like a blanket. And because of this, these houses didn't need huge fireplaces, or large stoves to keep them warm. One small heat source downstairs and one upstairs was probably more than enough.

I7° + wind factor, sounds like Minnesota Prairie. Covered all the way except the front keeps the wind and cold out. When 60+ mph winds come, any little crack or keyhole allows wind in that whistles and screams as it pushes thru the tiniest crack.. Keeping low ceilings keeps heat in the room, especially body heat for the number of people in there. Because of the windows there's a little heater, without it you would have frost on the inside of the windows. The bright colors of furniture and clothing is the only color you'd see for months and months. Strong people lived there....

What a beautiful place. Iceland is mainly a harsh environment. You may have noticed there are no trees which help break the wind. My husband was stationed there with the US Navy. The winters are very cold but Icelanders know how to build warm structures and use a great deal of wool. But what a great find.

Do we.still have declared remnants of Vikings in 1946? The house seemed to be modern. I usually remember vikings houses or shelters were mostly paneled with hard lumbers and pillared with round timbers-mostly. I could hardly believed. An heir or descendants could be. 1970's and 1980's too?
