The Chaco Culture National Historical Park is an ancient city in the United States that most people have never heard of before, us included. After exploring the Chaco Canyon ruins in New Mexico, we continued to ask each other why this park is not more popular!? This park should be on every American road trip bucket list.

Amazing video and a lot of historical info. Yes, not a lot of people know it. I read a book about it when I stay at a Breakfast and bed inn in Santa Fe. I was fascinated with the structure and culture and hope can visit in the future.

We love that area. That road is AWFUL from the north or the south! Awesome video! We try to go out there once a year and have spent a lot of time in that area of NM.

There is so much more to explore in this area that we had never heard of in all of our research. The best surprise was the free camping on the cliff of those badlands. Unreal and completely unknown to most. Thanks for watching!

Glad you liked it there. They have talked about paving the road, because people want to see it. They got tons and tons of people fighting not to. We said if people truly want to see it, they will drive it. If they did, it would be like Mesa Verde, to many people. Love the back wall climb, you two did, to get on the N top. You stopped too soon. Farther up the trail is Jackson Stair Way, Look it upon Google. Also, on the other side of the canyon, from Pueblo Bonito, in the Casta Rinconada Community, is the largest Great Kiva. It is 64 feet across, there was a tunnel that was covered, The medicine man could be by the stair case, and disappear in it, crawl through it and reappear near the center of the kiva. The strait wall in Pueblo Bonita, is 1/3 mile. Running E and W, the inside wall runs N and S. Don't know how long you were there. I know first time down, I was there for 3 days. Did the valley ruins the first day, and the next two days, did one long and short trail. Have been there many times. First night someone was playing the Native wood flute. Next Pow Wow I went to, I picked one up and learned how to play it. I now have 6, in different sizes. One a double flute. Has a one note on one side and a full 6 hole on the other. Neat sound. Hope you get out there again. Last spring they were asking for Camp Houst for 2 mths. If I was younger I would have tried. Really they were asking for 4 mths.

I think Chaco is one of our favorite sites. I agree to not pave the road. Like I said at the end of the video, I want people to see and know about the site but that usually leads to more destruction. We will hike to further sites on our next visit! Thanks for watching!

Great video! Glad the road is not paved to Chaco...I'm with you that it should be left for those who appreciate the difficulty of getting there!

I never knew about this place until I started taking a travel advisor course through The Travel institute. For an assignment, I had to find places to visit in NM related to Native people. I'm so glad I learned about Chaco Culture! I'm not sure if I want to share what I've learned with anyone else. 🤐The part about the man who was killed there, sparking preservation efforts was very interesting. Thank you for sharing this video!

This site was so much fun to learn about! As much as we want this channel to succeed, I am glad this video only has 1k views. As much as I think people should visit and learn about the Chaco Culture, this site should remain as a less visited site in order to help preserve it. Thanks for watching!

Fun fact: A few rooms you walked through have buried Natives in them... one of them, is where they found bones with human bite marks on them. Also, a couple spots you filmed have a TON of artifacts just off trail and very visible from where you were walking. A few shots where you pan around, you can see large mounts of sand. There are unexcavated ruins under those dunes. In fact the majority of the ruins in the park are still covered by sand. Most of the damage to the buildings in the park, were done by navajos about 600 years ago. I spent many years visiting and studying chaco.. so many incredible stories and facts to learn. Go back in winter, place is magical when it's below zero outside.

So interesting! We talked to each other while there about how much could possibly still be buried around the site and if there were plans to excavate more in the future. Nathan loves exploring ancient sites and learning about civilizations of the past so when we learned about Chaco we knew we had to go. Thanks for watching!

@@muddywaters1934 They were wiped out by the tribes in the region, and they destroyed themselves with no descendants left. The ones who moved into the cliff dwellings were "freed" slaves who feared for their lives and hid in these hard to reach locations. Some of these "slaves" were adopted into neighboring tribes.

So awesome. We literally tried to visit over the Labor Day break and the road was flooded 4 miles away from the visitor center. We were so bummed 😭! Especially after driving so far down that road 🤮. Glad to get to experience it through y’all’s eyes 🤙🙌🏼

Oh no! What a heartbreak!! I cannot imagine taking a camper down that road and then have to turn right back around. I guess flooding is why the road is not paved. Hopefully you will succeed on another attempt in the future. Chaco is 100% worth a visit.

@@SOSASATSUNRISE yea that was the most heartbreaking moment. We were all happy then came across the road flooded and just felt defeated 😔. Luckily we were able to hit up some of the other sites in that area.

Hey guys with the news on that couple went on a road trip across the states gave many people the tears and sadness. Whatever you guys do DON’T BLAME/CRITICIZE AND GET MAD AT EACH OTHER ON ANYTHING. 😠 or 😡 Make compromises and adjust to each others habits (good/bad lol). Don’t disrespect each other there is a LINE that both of you can’t cross. Sometimes less words spoken = a more peaceful relationship. Do not pickup strangers that wants to hitch a ride instead call police. Oh yeah…………………………….. enjoy the road trip 🤗

Thank you for this comment. We have had a few people reach out to us after hearing about the Gabby Petito case. It is so sad to hear a story about a couple trying to fulfill their dreams end in such a horrific way. Living on the road as a couple is not easy, but rest assured we are doing great and have many more stories to tell and future plans to fulfill!

How is this a public park? The native people built it and buried there dead there. So it should be up to them who is allowed to go there. How would you like it if i dug your family up ant took everything with me for "sience" then i sell it all to museum's around the world. Then let me open the graveyard up to the general public. How would you feel? I would be pretty upset. This is grave robbing at best. Its a discrace .i have no problem with the people who made this video. They are following the law. They're just in a graveyard. Being tourists. So much of native things and buildings, graves ,landmarks and destroyed them. So the natives that survived the genocide would have no claim to the land. If chaco was not in desert, or near gold or oil it wouldn't exist anymore. The invading European people burned boats that were graves. So much has been lost to wite greed. Shameful, absolutely Shameful.
