Fabulous presentation! Mr. Barnes, you have become an international icon associated with dinghy cruising! Well done sir! Thank you so much! During your next presentation at a large hall, I hope you can record a feed directly from your microphone so as to minimalize ambient noise from the show.

A quality presentation Roger, it's beyond me why more of this island race don't spend more time simply messing about in boats!

A great fingers up to the tedious racing brigade. Now almost considered an anachronism, dinghies made to be COMFORTABLE and for the joy of aesthetic appreciation of bumbling along a delightful coastline or rivers has been taken over by the ghastly plastic permanently capsizing fraternity who, with the encouragement of the RYA, think that the only way to sail is to go faster, wear silly clothes and "win". Thank goodness for this man, and other cruising dinghy sailors. Meanwhile others think sailing is a "sport" and so get sucked into buying those over-priced bits of plastic without any seats, and in which you either have to hang out on a trapeze or kneel in the middle just so they can go a knot or two faster. Not my idea of fun.

Indeed! The racing brigade seems to be all about the equipment and how much it cost. They probably don't even notice the countryside. It's a bit like buying an expensive car and just driving it fast up and down the motorway!

Most dinghy cruisers are not "anti" racing, Many do both. I've crewed in many races and enjoyed it, but I prefer day sailing. Also, whenever there are two similar boats on the water, there will always be an unspoken desire on the part of both skippers to be in the faster of the two, but dinghy cruising is about boating as an experience rather than a sport. It may be planning and completing a long passage through tidal waters, or it may be trying to reach the pub at the other end of the lake in time for lunch, or just finding out what's around the next bend of the river. It's about taking responsibility for your own safety rather than having a club safety boat on standby. It's about turning into the wind at just the right moment for your boat to kiss the pontoon gently as she comes to a stop. It's about simplifying your rigging and your way of handling it. It's about being prepared to deal with a capsize, but not expecting it to be a routine occurrence. It's about boating rather than competing. And it doesn't have to be under sail. You can dinghy cruise under oars, or even in a small inflatable with a basic little outboard. If you're carrying an anchor (and know how to use it) and a flask of tea/coffee (or the means to make it) you're cruising.

It wasn't Shackleton so much Roger.....it was Franklin. Read 'Barrow's Boys' by Ian Fleming's nephew, it's breath-takingly good!

Great presentation Roger, your book was recommended to me by a fellow dinghy sailer here in Finland. I intend to kit out my Meginjolle with ideas from your book and explore the lovely archipelago of Helsinki & Turku. Fair winds !

It is quite inspiring to Watch your videos. I have a more than half built Core Sound 20 in the garage but the build has been idle for some years. I Think that I must finish it and go sailing. Anders Holmström

Just found this: Here in the states a "dinghy" is a tender. Yes, we still race the 420s and the Melages, but if you say "dinghy" to an American, he will think deflatable. I cruise on an old Series 1 Gp14 that somehow made it over from the UK. I wonder if it is one of those "illegal aliens" Trump is going on about? Back to topic, thank you for this, I love cruising my small boats

Arthur Haberland having stood the helm on some real ships I have to say my favorite boat is a jet 14. Many of us yanks know what a real dinghy is. Oh they still race the jets. The hull may be considered a little tender by some, but my kids and I did our best gunkholing in one. It will blow over, but having crewed one frost biting I know for a fact they can handle some weather. Don’t have a 420 at this time, but I wouldn’t hesitate to go do an overnight in one.

I should add the gp14 is a heck of a boat. I believe it would be a pleasure to explore on one of them too.

@@SLOROB55 My brother had Jet 14 #149, which he restored so that she turned out to be really beautiful. Jet Black with light blue deck. She planed easily when the wind piped up in Hampton Roads, Virginia, USA. I understand she had the hull of the famous Bermuda International 14 with a smaller Comit sail. Quite sufficient for thrilling planing.

I disagree with his initial point. Not all of us agree on what is a dinghy. Can a 21 foot boat be a dinghy? As far as I'm concerned, anything over 12 feet is not a dinghy. Might even say 11 feet.
