I have just discovered your blogs and I must say that this and your other blogs are brilliant. I'm a naval officer ( some 56 years service in the RAN and RN and a Master Mariner Foreign), your equipage, your knowledge and experience is absolutely outstanding. I do so agree that going out in a boat is the adventure of the journey and how one manages each new challenge. I can see and hear why you're the DCA President. I'm going to continue to be delighted by your blogs and yes I'll buy the book. Cheers Joe in Australia

I would have never thought of camping in a boat till I saw your videos, seeing your friend with the "POP UP" tent on her boat got me thinking as I already have the same tent however being in my late sixties and having never sailed it may be just a dream?

I think it's good that you made special mention of the length of proper oars. I see that most people seem to think that "economizing" on that is the thing to do. The shorter the oar, the harder you work per length of glide. The longer the time in water and length of pull, the less you have to do it for the same distance.

Nice video, thank you. There are always useful hints and tips to pick up from your videos. I have often idly wondered what "Avel Dro" means and I just looked it up. To my surprise, the first search result was that it's Norwegian for "Breeding went." However, the second result seemed considerably more likely: Breton French for "Whirlwind." She's a beautiful boat.

Just finished reading your 'dinghy cruising companion'...a good read, lots of interesting info, splashed wth interesting anecdotes. The bit about the galley/ cooking done in split personality writing style between crew & skipper was hilarious!

You need to go check out Roger Barnes channel. Hes got a lot of fantastic videos and his book is amazing ! If you get serious about dinghy cruising you definitely want to read the dinghy cruising companion . Roger did a fantastic job on that book it's worth reading 2 or 3 times. The section on anchoring alone is incredible. This guy really truly knows his stuff.

Thanks for another video which as always teaches me much. Passing thoughts I used to use Fortress Anchors - Very light and exceptionally strong. Also a lot smaller than your 'Naval' style anchor. In five years of full time sailing and anchoring in exposed bays they never dragged. The only issue I had with them was that sometimes they were so well bedded in to the ground that I needed to use an angel to bet them out. They outperformed my plough anchors too.

Fabulous .Set sail and everything is there.Like a small house nothing is left out but minimalist .Wood is best and don't the Bretons know a thing or two about boats and navigating.Wooden boats almost seem to have a soul.Happy sailing and adventuring, all the best, thank you for your very helpful tips.

I am in the process of acquiring a wayfarer Mk2 just because a sail on one with a friend last year. I started sailing 3 years ago, I learn on a 1963 Merlin Rocket ....hard lessons here, as i have been told by more experience sailors "you just pass your permit and bought yourself a ferrari" well I learned the hard way and I am glad i did not quit on the contrary i have discovered you can cruise and camp and go for some adventure on your boat...Merci beaucoup Monsieur Roger pour vos video en France mais aussi sur Portland (Dorset) if you here again I would love to meet and maybe sail around i hope by the summer to be ready... Merci encore

I have watched you test a couple of boats but they never seem as good as Avel Drol What is the name of the sail set up you use? with no beam along the bottom of the sail just waiting to hit you on the head as in other boats! You have the perfect galley box and cooker arrangement and a super tent and sleeping equipment! Perfect!

Update.....hi Rodger, I finally got my Lilou2 kit in December 2020 and am 220hrs into the build. I've been posting YT videos of my progress. Question: does the Ilur have any additional ballast? The Lilou2 uses a water ballast tank. Thanks! James in Georgia, USA

Greetings from The U.S.A. - Florida - the west coast of the peninsula. Respectfully, I ask for a bit more detail please. I heard you say your boat is 15 feet, and I see on Vivier's website they indicate that ILURS L.O.A. = 4.44 meters, ( 14' 7" essentially). Is your boat a bit longer than what happens with new builds now? Thank you so much for all of your fine videos!

On the tall ship I was on we had flares in ours. Yes I know he had then down at the Stern in an other container. Maybe he uses then for waterproofing some things in then.

Those inflatable PFDs are NOT suitable if you have to self rescue. They tend to incapacitate one - have you tried swimming around in one? (See the RNLI videos of tests) climbing back aboard? Had it inflate after you thoughtlessly put on a coat over it? Had it "fail" on you? Serviced it $$$ On the WoodenBoat forum the consensus of the experts was for the Foam Type (also good for padding as you pointed out) 'nother point - Please tie your anchor so it cant fall out on a capsize cos it is likely inconvenient and / or disconcerting (maybe fatal) to have the bottom drag your boat away from you up-tide.... (it has happened) ' ' nnother point - TETHERS - The WBForum experts , all but one (and even he sometimes) use them - and so do i now. Best regards, Frank

Wonderfull info and presentation. TERRIBLE "music" underneath the commentary, like someone mumbling in the background with random screeches of high notes, had to shut it down 1/2 through, couldn't take the auditory abuse.
