Glad this popped up on my KZbin suggestions!! Definitely brought back some memories for this old guy. I worked there as a “truck driver” back about 1965ish. Job was driving the fishermen to one of about 3 or 4 different lakes that had access on old logging roads but was no road access to outside world back then. We had to maintain the roads by hauling gravel in back of pickups and rakes and shovels. Was hard work but it was “a job” Heavy stuff came over the ice. Fellow named Leo S. owned it then. Just so many memories from that summer up there. Thanks for the video.

Hi Bob, thank you for sharing this. My mother-in-law, Gretchen Lambert was formerly Gretchen Shapiro, Leo's daughter. She grew up there. I just found this video last night as we were all sitting around the dinner table talking. She hadn't seen the place since they sold it in 1973. I can't post photos here, but today she brought out a couple of they old brochures from the camp, including one with a picture of most of the staff. I wonder if you are in it. It was fantastic to listen to her describe what everything was as she was seeing it in the video. Gretchen is 83 now. Leo passed away at 96 in 2008.

@@LloydLevine-l8j Hi Lloyd. Wow it’s amazing what comes up when one randomly clicks on a video. I still live in the Fort, mid 70,s now. Was probably 16 or 17 when I worked for Leo. I started about a month after season opened and I think I left in August to go to Atikokan (the Mines eh) A funny story with Leo…(maybe he WAS serious?) but at breakfast one morning he told me he was very happy with my driving and not bouncing the fishermen too badly but over all I wasn’t a “good” truck driver because I hadn’t caught and brought him a baby crow and/or fox. Apparently was a tradition that he had those as pets each year. Not sure if one of the other drivers came through.? Gretchen may recall the “wild” pets

Beautiful video and commentary ! For those born and raised in the north, there are thousands of these stories and palces. Dreams that sprang up in the post war era, and really took off when the Trans Canada hwy was built , especially along Lake Superior, where I was born and raised , and Hwy 11 along the flats from Nipigon south. That melancholy feeling of watching all the hopes and memories fades back into the wilderness ,,, BC, where I live now, is filled with these as well .

They bought places to have year round. You saw the flies when you were there, guys would take it back when, but not the kids and wives. Family travel really took off. I remember when some of that stuff came out & was revolutionary. By the look of it, it was abandoned in the late '80's, and has been "explored" several times before you got there. Some of those buildings seem to have good fundamentals, but the clean-up and getting into shape as a lodge would take a few millions. Even as a modern homestead, the clean-up & trips to the dump would be an astounding lot of work.

Great stuff, Daryl. My favorite part was when you entered that one larger cabin/building and looked over the photos, as well as read the brochure from the 1920s. That was really exceptional. It would be hard for me to leave those things there, as they should really be preserved and cherished. In time they will only perish if left at that cabin. Guess the place closed when the owner passed heres the first line of the obituary.... Glen Treflin, age 59 of Fort Frances, Ontario passed away on Sunday, December 26, 2010 at LaVerendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances, Ontario after a long battle with cancer. Guess his wife either didnt have the means or the desire to continue the camp after he passed.

Glen and Kathy were a hell of a pair to run this place. She cooked some of the best meals I have ever had and Glen was constantly weed eating and doing the odd and end work around camp. She always had fresh cookies to pack for the days fishing trips out on Sphene Lake. Had some unbelievable trips up there and so many memories

My guess is likely early 2000's they stopped operating, some of the buildings upkeep was being neglected prior to that. The generator should of been upgraded in the 90's but other things like the stove and some of those cabins were newer, vinyl window I believe on the South cabin. What a difference those metal roofs make compared to shingles and rolled roofing. A shame the title didn't pass to another operator 20 years ago.

I am kind of shocked that a bear, racoons, squirrel's, something has not tore into that bag of dog food. It is so sad to see the place in this condition, but it is more concerning to me to see how those batteries, fuel tanks, gas cans and other environmentally hazardous items are just left abandoned. From the looks of the place I am pretty sure that not all of those fuel tanks and cans were probably not totally drained, and given time those batteries will eventually leak. Maybe its just me but I think it is disgusting that the owner is allowed to let the property be in such condition from a trash standpoint, the buildings falling apart is one thing but the literal trash laying everywhere that wind and time will eventually move out into the environment beyond the camp is just wrong, do they have a permit for a dump on that property?

@@darylgilbertoutdoors I remember going to Eagle back in the day of 30 inch legal muskie, but walleye is a must for shore lunch. Going up we saw lots of signs for resorts but everyone seemed to go to the big water Lac Suel, must be about 4 big lakes and they bring the big mounts to the sports shows and smaller operators couldn't finance marketing. Cool looking place like it was frozen in time.

stumbled across this adventure - wow what history, especially the boys camp that it used to be. I see there was a huge amount of work put into that place back in the day. I really enjoyed this video - good job. (P.S) what's the opening music - reminds me of into the wild stuff by Eddie Vedder, and your Dog is the best !!!!

Reminds me of a great fishing/hunting lodge me and the boys went to for over 11yrs way way up north in the Gogama area on a lake called Horwood Lake. Looks nearly identical to this place. Boat access only via a boat killing 10mile logging road. then 45min boat ride in. Absolute paradise. Only saw 2-3 boats the whole week were there. We limited out every day. Pickerel for dinner anytime. diesel generator. Wood sauna. Then it got screwed up by an a-hole by the name of Etse who in just 2 short years destroyed it all by taking us away to dumps with no fish that were $100 cheaper and 1/2 the distance away, and he broke up the group. Hate him to this day. Turns out everyone else turned on him 1yr later when he "lead" the 3rd and final trip with no fish caught. I bailed after the 2nd one. FU Etse, and burn in hell.
