This is my hometown. Believe it or not, my father is from the hills of Puerto Rico and when I asked him why he loved Auburn so much he told me, "It reminds me of home." The twisty roads and hills really do give the same impression. Awesome video!

Close to the old post office is the Auburn Alehouse that used to be split in half. a great Chinese restaurant on the left with the old Shanghai Bar on the right. That bar was the bar in the 1996 Travolta film “Phenomenon”. Lots of filming of the movie was there with Travolta and Robert Duvall. John Travolta’s car repair shop was built right outside the bar plugging up the entire street to the right when looking at the bar. To the right in the middle of the street was an “X” where the beam of light from the night sky knocked Travolta down. But the X is gone now and there’s not much recognition of the film there anymore.

at 14:05 you will see a good modern day photo of "Commercial St" in old town Auburn. The old brick building that has what looks like as a big circle sign was where "Great Western Litho Printing Company" used to be. I worked there after school in 1970 as a janitor. It is an old two story building. When I worked there, they were still operating an old Linotype machine everyday, ran by a guy named "Frank". It was my job to take all of the old discarded lead/tin type bars, load them all into a metal bucket, put it on the dumbwaiter lift and take it upstairs where I melted them down to make fresh lead/tin bars called "pigs" for the next day's run of type. I would watch Frank at the Linotype machine type in the line of copy, pull a lever which in turn activated the process of pouring the liquid hot lead/tin of the 'pig' into the machine to make that one line of 'type'. hence the name.....Linotype. As Frank typed in each letter of the line, a little brass tab with the letter or number dropped into a slot or tray forming the base that made the lead/tin type. I had to clean up around the Linotype after Frank's shift was done. His area was always littered with his pipe tobacco remains. Also upstairs was the old printing press for the long gone "Placer Herald Newspaper" My friend Jerry and I were told my my boss that if we could take that whole thing apart and haul it away, we could have all the money that we sold it for scrap. It took us most of that Summer to get the job done. We loaded up Jerry's 1/2 ton 1964 Chevy long bed pickup with literally TONS of metal scrap as we dismantled that printing press and hauled it away to downtown Sacramento. I still have a brass bearing I saved as a memento from that job. What I REALLY wanted was the very last silver offset sheet that was still left on the press after its last edition. The boss took that. The print shop is long gone. I wonder what ever happened to that Linotype and the Heidleburg Printing press that was used daily at "Great Western Lithograph"? .......Russell Decker, Placer High School, Class of '71

My grandfather survived the 1906 sf earthquake and moved to Marysville when he was 10 and lived above a funeral parlor and became a mortician. He and my grandma borrowed a model T and drove to auburn in 1916 I believe and got married in the courthouse and honeymooned in the auburn hotel. They had their 60th anniversary at the auburn hotel. Good channel!

I’m amazed that you were able to make such a great video in the middle of a pandemic! Well done! I’ll visit the Old Town Pizza restaurant. It must be a good place, if you say so! I’ve been shopping and dining in Auburn for many years. Check the Mexican restaurant on the Main Street! Great food and ambiance! You found sights I’ve missed, especially the statue with the “little feet”! Good one, Sarah! Love y’all’s sense or humor! Your superimposed photos are so helpful to see how much or how little a site has changed. Love the background music that you always add. You must have quite a collection of tunes and background sounds. I like the horses’s hooves sound! Thank you for all your time and care you spend just to entertain us. You are a “pair to draw to”! Hope I meet you on the trail, my friends! Mo’ from Stockton

Being a political and socioeconomic refugee from California (native born), this makes me so home sick, having lived in the Roseville, Auburn and Foresthill triangle. Damn if I can remember the name of the old gentleman who knew all the old stories of the area and led hikes in the area like to Deadwood, Bogus Thunder, etc. The Dorer Ranch, I was fortunate to know friends who knew the owner and caretaker, Danny (the "mad perfesso"r) and would go down to the old house and mines in the area, donating a case of beer. I wonder if Danny and his wife are still there? I recall while living in Forsethill, on my days off traveling to areas like Chicken Ranch road and hiked out to an old town site with a mine. I found many artifacts, shards of diner plates, part of the shattered cast iron schoolhouse wood burning stove door, melted glass as the old town had burned, "Last Chance." I had a booklet that I purchased in the Auburn Courthouse gift shop; it had a picture of Last Chance and I was amazed that I was able to stand in the same spot the photographer stood and take a picture there. I took a chance and drove out to Deadwood; got my little pickup truck stuck and had to hike out through Michigan Bluff. Of course, the snows came before I was able to retrieve it. It cost me a fortune to eventually get a tow truck to drive out there. Just yards from my truck, a massive pine tree had fallen across the dirt trail and I had to drive back to Foresthill for the tow truck drivers chainsaw, getting a flat tire on the way back. Good times! Having worked and lived in Placer County, I was sad to see many homeless and mentally ill move in. I guess the old saying is true: "You can't go home."

And some day I hope to get to California to explore places in your state that you have introduced me to through your program. It's where the San Joaquin river, I-5, and the Southern Pacific rail line all merge together. Growing up in Tracy, I never realized the importance until I moved away and had joined the Navy, where upon I learned that it was a "primary" target for an enemy ICBM. If you watch the Pilot of "Then came Bronson" with Michael Parks, you'll see him plunge his Harley Davidson sportster into the river at the boat ramp at Mossdale. He also gets a job later cleaning bricks with his co-star Bonnie Bedillia, they were actually cleaning the bricks from downtown Stockton's city renewal project, with the bricks located near the old Heinz plant between Lathrop and Stockton.

12:23 I met a woman who had a small shop in Mariposa Ca named Alinda Franklin (deceased. 2009). She made cloth sculputed figures like your jailbird, she probably made that one. She once made look alike dolls for the whole mash cast. www.goldrushcam.com/dolls%20by%20alinda.htm at 14:00 my grandma used to have a shop in this building next to the bank.

My boys were grown and gone, both of my parents had passed and I was alone with 4.5 acres to tend. My one and only grandchild was in Sacramento. I wanted to be able to care for her. So I sold the acreage and bought a condo near them. In 2004 my son decided they should move here to Riverton in the Salt Lake Valley. So I came with them because I was born when the Dead Sea just had a little cold! You missed the Chinese graves in the old cemetery. I think they were down by Rattlesnake Dick grave. Thanks again for taking me back home. Love your channel and so happy to see Sarah again! ❤️❤️

Beautiful courthouse and terrific old fireball. I worked in our county courthouse retiring 2 years ago tomorrow. No character whatsoever. It's been remodeled so many times there is no semblance to the original courthouse on the inside except the doors to the courtrooms and huge car ed wall clocks here and there. Such a shame. The federal bldg is pretty much pristine as is city hall, but the federal bldg is the best. Thanks for another great history lesson and tour.

History Hunters I got some good “color” but A LOT of work! Back then we could dredge. Still a lot of work. Wet suit, mask, snorkel. Then when you got too deep fro the snorkel you had to hook up the air, so it was live diving. Probably a contributing factor to my messed up back! Lol

That rocky structure in the cut is in fact ancient river bed rock. Many of the old hydraulic mines were in just such ground as that seeking the gold in the old river bed

Auburn was alot better before the mass invasion of Bay Area transplants flooded in over the last 25 plus years. It's not the same place I grew up in, sadly. Major traffic and high cost of living. Ps. Old Town Pizza is located in Old Town, not downtown. 😊
