Trivia - this movie is what the famous Sondhiem Musical A Little Night Music is based on - Its a fascinating exploration seeing Bergman translated to a broadway musical but it is exquisite in its own right.

Good to know! I’m most certainly not well versed in live musicals, it’s been probably 5 or more years since I’ve been to one. I will keep this in mind, thank you!

I’m literally here to gain more character info for this show… which I haven’t auditioned for yet. No OCD here 😅

Fun video! Enjoyed your take as well. Smiles is definitely my favorite of the set so far (I'm six films in). I'm making my way through the boxset right now (though rather slowly) and I intend to do a sort of ranking of the movies in a future video. Keep it up!

Hahaha yeah I’m also moving through the set, but at a snail’s pace. I’ve since watched Crisis and found it to be pretty meh. But six films in and Smiles is your fave so far?? I really enjoyed it, but I hope I find more than a few that I like more haha. A ranking sounds really interesting though! So many different films and thematic focuses would make every list quite unique. I would be very interested in seeing your ranking in the end :)

I like hearing your thought process here. My experience with Bergman has been a bit of a rollercoaster and most of the time I think it all has to do with what I'm feeling at that moment. The part in your video where you looked at the main menu and then thought, nah, imma watch Basket Case. I totally get it.

Definitely. Having the right urge, and being in the correct mood is super important when watching a film imo. Hell, even tonight I watched the first 10 minutes of a movie but decided to stop and play Tony Hawk instead hahaha. If my mind is elsewhere or if I want to be doing something else in the back of my mind, my viewing and critique of the film will be effected.

This was my first Bergman, and I can’t say I found it overly memorable to be honest. Some of his other stuff though....The Virgin Spring is probably my favorite. Imagine The Last House on the Left, but a lot more Swedish and artsy. An essential, devastating watch.

I’m not sure if I would have felt the same as I do if it had been my first Bergman. Does that sentence even make sense? Maybe I would have felt the way you do if it were also my first... that’s basically what I’m trying to say lol. I found it to be quite charming though, and pretty refreshing when compared to the intense Bergman stuff I’ve watched before. You’re making The Virgin Spring sound really good by the way. I really really like depressing, dreadful films. I think that one may be kind of late into the boxset 🤔 or maybe it’s earlier than I’m remembering? Perhaps I’ll jump around in the set a little. That or I’ll start cranking through them as fast as I can! Looking forward to Through a Glass Darkly too

The film focuses on fickle men and scheming women. Both sexes have their faults. How post modern of you to not see that.

This is one of the more forgettable Bergmans to me personally.

maybe you just don't like romantic comedies. Imo, as a very theatrically-styled filmmaker who's known for making what are essentially melodramas, something like this is the best use of his skills as a director. All the heavy themes you associate w/ Bergman are here too, just skillfully woven benath the surface of a frivolous sex-comedy (the best of its kind imo, better than the Hollywood kind from the same era except maybe top-tier Billy Wilder like the Apartment, and better than the European directors known for this kind of film like Max Ophuls or Ernst Lubitsch)
