Bumpass Hell is one of the most unique spots in any of the California National Parks. This hydrothermal area has boiling mud pools, steam vents and lots of colors in the dirt and water. It is a really fun hike to do in the national park. Let me know what you think in the comments.

It turns out that Lassen is the least visited National Park! I’m not sure if it has to do with how remote it is, but it’s phenomenal! It features all four major types of volcanoes, remnants of eruptions, and boiling sulphuric pits. How is it not more popular?!

It is a bit off the beaten path. I suppose we are lucky it isn't more well known, then it would be super crowded like Yosemite!

@wayouttatune2 I went to Pinnacles in 2008 when it was still a Monument. I knew it would be a Park someday. Recently did a list of the 19 parks I have visited, Pinnacles was my #3 behind only Redwoods and Yosemite!

Great video and you really took some awesome shots. I have a story about Mt Lassen, I took my kids there camping in the 90’s. About 3am a really loud siren went off and woke up everyone in camp. A few years past Mt St Helens I was wondering if the ground was going to start shaking any moment. 20 minutes passed and just as the last flashlight turned off, the siren went off again. Now everyone was extra nervous and about 5 minutes later a ranger came by in a golf cart saying “sorry folks we had a malfunction”. Camping on a volcano- Mt.Lassen is a beautiful park and shouldn’t be missed.

Excellent video! I would like to add that Lassen Volcanic Park regularly gets so much snow every winter that the park MAY NOT open until almost June. Many parts have been closed as late as July, call or check their website before traveling to the park. Lassen Peak regularly has restrictions on hiking to the summit because of trail closures with thunderstorms popping up on sunny afternoons. Immediately retreat down the trail if clouds start to spontaneously form on the summit.

I have visited Bumpass Hell twice. The water there looks like glittering liquid opals. You're not supposed to step off the wooden trails, but we did 😏. The river flowing out of there cools as it goes downstream, and its banks are soft powdery clay. Mixed with the mineral water from the river, you can give yourself a facial, and it makes your skin glow. Some people were even soaking in the river!

I had the same question. I was planning on going to Lassen this past weekend to go stargazing and was concerned about the air quality and visibility of the stars at night. I contacted the park directly through their Instagram page. They responded pretty quickly the following day with this: The stars have been decent, for the past few days smoke has been thick in the day and mostly clear at night. Smoke impacts and air quality can vary greatly from day-to-day and even in different areas of the park. The park is open with no closures associated with fire at this time. Please check: www.nps.gov/lavo/learn/management/current-fire-acitivity.htm for information on fire activity in the park www.nps.gov/lavo/learn/nature/airquality.htm for information about air quality in the park inciweb.nwcg.gov/ for information about fires outside the park fire.airnow.gov/ for a map that shows smoke impacts and fire across the United States Hope this helps.
