Exploring Canada's Largest Church : Saint Joseph's Oratory in December 2022

Saint Joseph's Oratory is located on top of Mount Royal, overlooking Montreal. The Renaissance Revival facade and Art Deco interior, draws more than 2 million visitors and pilgrims to its steps each year. I start off at the Côte-des-Neiges station and make my way to the pedestrian entrance to the church. Unfortunately, the stairs to the grounds were under construction at the time and I was forced to take a shuttle.

My family also took me to this Church when I visited Canada all those (30+) years ago. What I clearly remember, were all the 'Walking Canes' (hundreds maybe thousands of them) saved (displayed) by the church. Visitors that were 'healed' and did not need their canes anymore when they left the church. It was an amazing sight.

I was just walking these very streets (and the Oratoire itself) a month ago and I miss it a lot, even though it's even colder there now than it is here in NYC. Nothing quite like being able to walk past the Oratory every morning. I never got tired of it the 3 weeks I was there this fall.

There are some people that stop at every single front step and say a prayer. There is also a museum inside that has life like displays off how it was back in the old days, with nuns being nurses, old medical devices/furniture. Definitely a place everyone should see at least once.

Thank you for this tour - it brought back memories of my visit there in the 1980s. It's unfortunate all that construction is underway. I was there in the summer, and it was a beautiful site. Although a grand and impressive building, I did not find St. Joseph's Oratory as welcoming as Notre Dame. I suppose that's true of many modern buildings. And I must say again, your tour of Quebec's old city last night was excellent - one of your best! Thanks, again.

Thanks for sharing another wonderful trip to St. Joseph's Oratory. I stumbled upon this place one afternoon on Mount Royal. I wasn't even aware of its existence! The place took my breath away with its shear size and beauty. And the Sunset from the steps was lovely. I had a wonderful day there. Brings back memories of of my time in Montreal back in 2007-8. There was no construction of the open land in front below the Oratory. Just parking lots and paths. I wonder what they are building there now? Too bad you can't access the curved stairways due to the construction. I took some great photos from there. I hope one day to return for a visit.
