EQ1 was like this to a degree in the early days. Players would hold in-game memorial gatherings for guild members who had passed away or were retiring from the game. GMs would come into the game world to perform marriages between characters (with the tricks and cool stuff GMs could do, like temporarily flag everyone as beta-neutral so mobs wouldn't attack during the ceremony and enlarge people or give people levitation). EQ1 is still going too...

Countless hours of gameplay, a terabyte or so of several years-worth of footage, and memories, of course, lead me down a rabbit hole of reminiscence quite frequently, and that is about the conclusion I've come to. Granted, there's a lot more to it than that, and I don't know how much I would do differently if I could go back knowing what I know now. These games will likely forever be a part of who I am, for better or for worse.

Those memorials in AW remind me of the tombstones you sometimes find in games with the name of a dev or a dev loved one that passed away during development. I found a few in my time. Probably the most beautiful and touching one I've ever seen was in Just Cause 3. Hyeng Woo Shim's "Beloved Son, Brother, Friend - See you in the next dimension". Surrounded by thousands of flowers, overlooking pristine water, and a view you wouldn't believe. Its incredibly moving.

Regarding The Ship, there is a money penalty for random kills in the main gamemode. For example at 4:59 you go to negative cash. The money system is a fun balancing mechanic as weapons pay out more the less they're used, making weaker or less common weapons less useful than say a fire axe. There was also a spiritual successor, bloody good time.

Islands of nyne was so good when i got it back in the day of testing, IMO this is what i think big streamers put a lot of negative talk on the game and as they have a big following every one just jumped on the band wagon so it went down hill, honestly i loved it and still have screen shots of the old leader boards.

I started playing Gmod when it was just a mod for the source engine, I was 14.. I'm now 32. It just shows how long a game can survive if we allow modding. EA and other big triple A publishers should take note of stuff like Gmod. Some of my best gaming memories as a kid were playing the old school RP and The Tower servers on Gmod. Then there's Battlefield 2, someone has revived that too. The mods for that game extended the life by like 10+ years.

I remember The Ship: Murder Party! I used to watch a handful of old KZbinrs play it. A shame it never took off despite that. Also, Jesus Christ I started tearing up when I saw those memorials in Active Worlds. Those were real players who are now deceased. It's so haunting, yet so touching at the same time. H1Z1 is still gonna be of my biggest heartbreaks of my life, next to my first love break up. Of course i'm talking about tome BEFORE King OF the Hill and Just Survive, when the game was as one. The memories i've have with this game are surreal. Easily one of best survival games i've played. It wasn't groundbreaking gameplay wise, but sneaking around Pleasant Valley (where there were more shooting then in US schools) just to come out barely alive wiht few ammo, exploring the Hospital (still one of most climactic places in open world survival), or just cruising around trying to stay alive, all that just has special place in my heart. the game had very strong base, and if they did put money from King of the hill to survival, i'd say we would be talking about best Zombie survival yet. And i'll never forgive them abandoning all this.

You know, as a VR user that enjoys a weekend on vrchat every once in a while, and having over a thousand hours in Garrys Mod, it really makes you think, the sandbox games we grew up on, just like IMVU, Activeworlds, and all that are all at some point, going to experience the same turn of events. Friends we made in those communities, worlds we'd spend countless hours on, all will disappear. Growing up has made me note this already, having friends come and go, only for you to catch up and wonder where the time went as you each went your own route. There will be a day we see our friends on VRchat and discord servers just, disappear, and holy fuck that hits hard.

H1Z1 in its prime 2015-2016 was the best shit ever. The post zombie apocalyptic world was such a vibe, together with the spooky music and silence when traveling through the world made it feel real. Just the right amount of arcady-ness with the right amount of realism for me. The movement and gun mechanics were sick, I had never played a game with bullet travel time and bullet drop, I thought it was amazing. The gun sounds also sounded so menacing from up close and at a distance. Listening to those old gun sounds is one of the things that make me really miss this game. In contrast to what the game looked like after the combat update it's like it's not even the same game anymore. All good things must come to an end, but I just wish H1 lasted a bit longer.

Islands of Nyne, I dumped alot of time into that game, the shooting felt amazing I think a lot of people were starting to feel the fatigue of battle royal at the time and not giving it a chance. The shroud shoutout was peak playercount for sure. When the players dipped a bit the dev's noped out WAY to fast, killing what could have been an awesome game. It was also a bit overpriced for the lack of content and progression. A could have been game for sure.

Islands of Nyne was an amazing experience, glad I got to play in it's prime. It used a lot of generic in game assets and it's visuals weren't the greatest. Gunplay was fantastic but the game never really took off. Too many BR's at the time for it to ever be successful.
