It's just statistics. If the population have 1 in 100 a-aholes, that means there would be 3 of them there, which is easy to isolate/ignore and they often get bored and leaves with slower turnaround of players. If you have a popular new release, there's literally thousands of a-holes that's being constantly replaced with new ones. Even though the ratio might somewhat similar, the latter feels a lot worse. Obviouisly there's exception that proves the rule as well though ;)

I think you feel less anonymous in small communities. Honestly one of the perks of playing these "dead" games is that you do sort of get to know everybody pretty quickly, and in general people are a bit more decent to each other. I do wish Dystopia had more players, for example, but I think I'd also be somewhat less invested in it if it suddenly had 10s of thousands of active players instead of hundreds.

the smaller the community, the less likely there will be consistent conflict. it's a common theme in sociology, psychology and even in biology. when you spend day after day or at least a very long time with the same group of people, you get close and usually friendly because being an asshole will just get you shunned by others. you see the same thing happen in things like clubs, workplaces, subcultures, small villages and so on
@donjuandemccarthy20417 ай бұрын
Thank you for looking at RS2. I've been gaming for 20 years, and RS2 held such a special place in my heart. Few may read this, but I'd love to put my thoughts to print. When this game released, I was living alone in a rural town in China as a newly-graduated English Teacher. I was the only foreigner in an entire city of 800,000 Chinese people. This game was my escape, my disassociation, my friend when the closest native english speaker was 2hrs away by fast train. Playing this game, I would be playing with mostly Aussies given the time zone, and it was SO cathartic to be able to speak to them. Sometimes I'd just have conversations irrelevant to the gameplay with these folks just to enjoy talking to somebody somewhat likeminded. Sometimes I'd explain my circumstances to these fellows and they'd make it a point to include me in conversations, knowing that I longed for a western connection. I played this game for hours, and beyond the escape this game offered I associate my time playing it with that period of adventure and journey. Seeing it die makes me so very sad, this is one of the few games in my 300+ game catalogue that actually has some "meaning" to me, even arbitrarily. I wish it could have a renaissance and the only players weren't sweatlords that make it unfun every time i try to play again.

Blenhiem reminds me of an experience I had on a very difficult game one time. I had just got off work from a 12 hour shift and bought a game called MX bikes. Well I played single player and couldn’t figure anything out so I went to multiplayer after installing the bike mods. That’s where I ran into an extremely patient guy who happened to be streaming. He literally spent like 6 hours just teaching me while streaming how to stay up and ride the dirtbikes around the track. Showed me his settings, got in a discord call and just let a stranger on his stream that had like 200 something viewers. That experience and his patience is one of the only reasons I was able to even learn that game with being in my 20s I tend to give up easier on games like that. But having someone being kind and encouraging you to keep going is a super cool experience in a game you’re new to. Unfortunately my internet went out and I never added that person and haven’t spoke to them again which is sad but super cool experience regardless.

I only recently have found your videos, but I absolutely adore how positive your videos are, even when dealing with poorly reviewed games. Even when a game is clearly janky or unpolished, you never outright tear it apart and give it an honest go with the intention of actually understanding it. I can't tell you how much I love that, especially in an era of ragebait where people are often rallied against games by grifters with no honest intentions. Interacting with the community to understand the culture that has formed behind these tiny games adds so much that's often left unsaid, and I think you really go above and beyond in all of your videos. Thank you for making this kind of content.

Random comment no one asked for but ever since I found your channel...I think a year or so ago? Being so lonely these wholesome videos gave me rushes of nostalgia for games I never played; I don't know how that's possible. Maybe it's the old graphics or the BGM selection but always love these types of videos. Thank you for making these incredible videos and for inadvertently making me feel a little less alone during my watch.

A channel I really like to watch is Wiljum who does Rust stuff. He's sort of just like telling a story of his time in these games and its cool to follow along. I feel like the vibe is super similar.

I got this video randomly in my recommendations, and I'm glad I watched it. It's always nice to see the people who are passionate enough about a game to keep it going even after all official support has dried up. We all forget it sometimes, but every video game is someone's favorite, no matter what anyone else thinks about it.

Rising storm 2 is so much fun, just pure chaos. Shame the player base gets smaller and smaller by day.

Edit: I wrote this before watching where he mentioned MEGA. Sorry for the repeated info but it's still a good reminder I suppose It really is. There's always a couple full servers so if anyone is thinking about trying it out it's worth it. A tip for new players, do NOT join "MEGA" servers. They're malicious and use fake player counts and have been known to install malware, though I'm not sure if that's still an issue. I mistakenly joined one once and it forced to join their discord server which proceeded to soft lock my PC. LMC gaming and PR gaming are my favorite servers that are usually full.

Not fixing a voice chat from a game after abandoning it is probably the most horrible thing to do to it... They could at least have fixed that❤💙💛 Greetings from Germany

Yeah it’s clear the devs never really cared after launch. There are game breaking bugs that have existed since launch

Makes me sad seeing all these people that love these older games that don't get any attention anymore. Makes me nostalgic for games I've played in the past that are gone. It's kind of hard to watch... very bittersweet.

As a German who is used to hearing the acronym 'HH' as a Nazi salute, standing for 'Heil Hitler', it always feels strange to hear it and not think that they are Nazi sympathizers. Just to be clear, I don't want to accuse Jeff of anything; I just want to point out that phrases like 'HH Brother' can be very easily misunderstood. With that being said, RIP Jeff.

The biggest thing I've learned about a lot of the games that are more dead including games I still play from time to time, the community is typically super welcoming and will do what they can to teach you about the game they're passionate about. Beyond that they'll and up being people you'll be friends with beyond just the game

I'd love to see you try Forgotten Hope 2. It's a ww2 sim mod project based on battlefield 2 and it's still being actively developed. I've played a ton of it and it still has a pretty healthy small community of maybe around 100-200 players

so many of these games had such amazing communities, they were so friendly and welcoming, just enjoying life in their little niche corners of the online gaming world. i can imagine when these games were more popular these groups were the best to be in, and it kinda hurts to see them dwindling like this. these guys are so sweet to new players it makes me cry man.

Me and my friend have an inside joke that comes from RS2:V. We were both playing in a match as the Aussies, and there was this guy screaming in VC in an Aussie accent pretending the enemy team was Emu's. When the enemy commander called in an arty strike, this guy screamed, "THE EMUS HAVE ARTILLERY!!!!" And me and my friend were dying for like 7 minutes straight and we reference that match all the time. That match was like 4 years ago 😂
