The "Winners" was the Sonoma Inn originally. My step father was the Auditor/Controller until 1957.. we then moved to Pacific Grove California, quite a change. Winnemucca was a very cool town. Often visited Paradise Valley. Back when it was legal (pre 1968) over the years we found hundreds of arrow heads up around Cottonwood Creek.

@@campoutwestus Yup. Hunting for scorpions, throwing blasting caps in the Humboldt river to blow out the carp, picking choke cherries and pine nuts. Best story was standing inline with all the kids at the Sage Theater all day Saturday movies for a quarter. Next door was a bar.. On one of those Sat. we heard a huge ruckus/ sounded like a real fight with broken bottles and chairs and then comes an Indian flying out the door backwards with a knife in his belly.. I kid you not. This was the real deal.

@@campoutwestus Welcome to Winnemucca, a balanced community. For everyone of the 13 brothels there was a church. I really miss that town given it still has some of that "charm". By the way,, about a mile up Water Creek there was Chief Winnemucca's winter camp ground on the right (west). Not only did we fine dozens and dozens of projectile points ( arrow heads ) I found a Spanish bridle. The local museum director, archeologist, confirmed it as being made around 1500. Alas, stolen from my collection along with other finds. Keep in mind the county was named after the famous German explorer Von Humboldt.
