We contacted both priests and professional docters. The priests found nothing, there were saying there was no supernatural presence affecting her and so we ultimately ended up listening to the docters. They concluded that she was suffering from pscychosis due to the depression medication she had taken in secret. Ultimately she was able to get well and is now doing a lot better

I have a schizophrenic relative and my extended family was very religious. They had also thought she was possessed and had preformed “exorcisms” I remember one in particular that took place at our house. This was about 25 years ago, I think I was 9 she was mid 20’s. I remember standing and watching it in the living room a bit freaked out while my grandfather and some uncles stood around here in a circle praying for her, every time she attempted to get up and leave they force her to the ground. I remember her crying and yelling it was disgusting what they were doing, anyways... I was standing there watching and out of no where she jumped up and lunged at me. she some how managed to pin me to the wall and put her fingers in my mouth all in one movement she then proceeded to stretch my mouth open slightly tearing the edges (kinda like jokers mouth but very minimal) they were slight tears but tears nonetheless. Shit really freaked me out and kinda fukd me up for life. I still have small scars at both ends. Later on she got psychiatric evaluation and was put on a couple different medications, lithium was one I think which helped enormously! These type of “possessions” always remind of her. She would say and do a lot of similar things, the severe symptoms or “possessions” would happen in early 20s when schizophrenia would start to show its face. She’d talk In different voices, sit in the middle of the night staring at the wall a few inches away and mumble and laugh to herself. We’d have LAN parties on our teen years at my cousins house and she would do all sorts of freaky shit. Kill rabbits and bring them inside, say crazy ass shit. Yeah... mental illness is crazy. Agreed. It’s a tragic story, but I truly don’t think that she would’ve had a way out of it either way. First of all, she explicitly refused to seek further medical help, despite the requests of the priests. The priests weren’t trying to deny that doctors could’ve helped her, they were just doing what they could within the confines of Anneliese’ own demands. And honestly, she was probably right about her assumptions of seeking medical help. She likely would’ve been locked in a mental institution for the rest of her life, and subjected to things such as electroshock treatment. I personally doubt she would’ve been able to finish her college education like she did in reality, and even if she did complete it, and was cured, she never would’ve been able to be a teacher. Overall, it’s just a shitty situation, with no happy endings.

There have been a lot of speculative diagnoses for Anneliese Michel over the years so I might as well through mine in. I think she was suffering from a rare condition called Anti-NDMA receptor encephalitis as her seizures, paralysis and the symptoms that appear like schizophrenia line up with the experiences of a young woman called Susannah Cahalan. Calahan recovered and wrote a book about her illness called Brain on Fire which was made into a film in 2016 and there are a lot of similarities with what happened to Anneliese. Sadly for Anneliese, this condition would never have been recognised by the doctors of the 1970s so there would have been no way to save her life if she did have this illness.

Interesting how the psychiatrist recommended shock therapy as a solution. It really demonstrates that what we may view as progressive and scientifically static can be seen in the future as archaic and medieval. Not to say there isn't any legitimacy to his diagnosis but so goes the phrase "those who live in glass houses should not throw stones", as to say something we may view as unchallenged truth may yield plenty of falsehood

My brother went through something similar when he was 14 through 16 years old , when he was younger my mom would claim he saw things as a kid and would always be crying and scared ! I was estranged from them so I just thought it was BS ! When he turned 14 or 15 tho he began having episodes , thankfully not as Grave as Annalise’s. At the time I had just moved in with my family so I was there when this happened I remember not believing him and even yelled at him during one of his episodes ! I’ll never for get that day , the way he was speaking was very much like the Annalise recordings he started punching the car window hurting his hands and when I yelled at him to shut up cause I thought hair was just an excuse he had to avoid school ! He broke down crying and said “ I Can’t , I’m trying” I hugged him deeply said I was sorry and said I would help him through it. Priest would say he was just spoiled and needed a psychiatrist. That day I stopped believing in church ! I believe in God and Jesus but not the Church I hate the church! After much time and other help we sought that I won’t speak of here , my brother managed to manage on his own and stopped being afraid in a certain way I guess! I think whatever was going on just stopped happening at a certain age ! He never took medication or anything , he became really involved in church though ! He is 21 years old now and he is a Sergeant in National Guard! I’ve asked hi now that he’s older , if what he saw and what he went through was real or just a kid thing and he said it was very real and before he would say he would still see bad things every now and then but didn’t fear it anymore like he used too. I don’t think he sees them anymore now tho and he is very happy and successful now ! Whatever was going on with Annelise whether Demons or Mental it saddens that she could not fulfill her dream and that her story ended tragically I hope she found peace in the next life ! I honestly believe the system , life and the church failed her. The doctors just chalked her up to the next and didn’t follow up, the church is too set in their ways and should have worked together with doctors .And Life Is Just a Cunt sometimes .

The history of psychiatric medicine is full of tragic and horrible stories like these. The human mind and its workings are still mysterious to us, but we're definitely better at it now than we were decades ago. I hope someday we'll be able to fully understand the human brain and prevent people from suffering like this ever again.

This just shows how important mental health and proffesions relating to it were and are. If Aneliese would have been alive today she would have a much stronger chance in being correctly diagnosed.

@Dio Brando Possibly, but most likely not. There are people who are Able to live day to day life at least somewhat normally whilist suffering from paranoid scizophrenia and similar conditions. Including psychosis. Whats important is that Aneliese would have been given the peace of knowing whats wrong with her instead of being made to suffer through the indolence and ignorance of religious zealots.

The striking thing about this case that separates it from all others are the occasions when two voices are speaking from her at the same time overlapping and its on tape long before effects that could fake this existed. Also, the one voice seems impossible to have come from a human let alone while a totally different voice is speaking under it. This is the defining detail that makes this case different and its somewhat overshadowed by the death and court trials.

Hi, great video! But i think you got something wrong at the end, with the actual conviction. You said the Priests were fined and the parents didnt get punished due to the loss of a daughter being hard enough on them. Actually (according to my research at least), this was the punishment suggested by the Staatsanwaltschaft (Public prosecutor), but the actual court convicted all four of them to time in jail/probation, as you said. Minor detail i know, but as a german who had never heard of this i wanted to do some research myself and noticed that small error. Anyway, keep it up man, Gruß aus Deutschland!
@TheExploringSeries4 жыл бұрын
Hmmm, I've read conflicting info about this. The prosecutors did suggest a lighter sentence overall, such as just a fine for the priests and nothing for the parents. I can't determine if the parents actually went on probation or not. I wish I could find a newspaper article or something from after the trial.

What wasn't mentioned was that Annelise's mother had her first daughter out of wedlock. It was very frowned upon @ the time. The girl died age 8 (as was mentioned in the narration).The parents were devoutly religious & may passed their devout ideas on to Annelise as well as the mother's guilt over the out of wedlock pregnancy & the child's subsequent death. Stopping the seizure medications might not have helped.
