Honestly, this is the kind of thing I feel like the foundation has been missing lately. It seems like so many articles lead up to some big grand existential metaphor that unveils the nature of reality and the universe, which can be interesting, but I can’t help but feel that it’s begun to detract from the foundation’s roots. Not every SCP needs to be a god or massively powerful deity. Many of the most popular articles on the site, like 049, 096, 682 and many others aren’t massive, time-bending beings, but just interesting creatures. So many articles try to tell some big story through exploration logs and recovered documents, it sometimes feels less like scientific catalogs and more like something that belongs in the tales section of the wiki. Regardless, there are many quite well written articles that go more in their own direction than what the foundation started as. In the end, I’m honestly just glad the SCP community has survived for this long and retained such a following. It’s so great to see this huge online mixing pot of anyone and everyone’s collective creative juices still churning out creepy new ideas and concepts.
@starwarsnerd1004 жыл бұрын
While there's still room for more complicated, lengthy ones, I think some of the best SCPs can be simplified down to a sentence or two. "weird city under London", "unkillable lizard", ect. Even 4000 can be described as "land of faeries, if you give them names weird things happen". On the other hand I'm still not 100% sure what a Pattern Screamer is.
@aplaceholdername9014 жыл бұрын
I personally feel the exact opposite. The more existential and unfathomable an SCP is, the more interesting. SCP 049, 096, and 682 are some of the most boring SCPs on the site, being not very well written and only able to hold themselves up because of some tales that extend the story. The older SCPs are far too simple, there isn’t a lot of mystery, the conclusion of the SCP is concrete and doesn’t allow much imagination (other than through tales of course), and many of the concepts are old and have already been explored. The more I have gotten into the SCP universe the more fascinating it becomes, and I don’t feel large exploration logs or recovered documents take that fascination away. If reading longer and more complicated (and intriguing) SCPs is not your thing, there are still plenty of SCPs in every series, including Series 6 and 5, that fit your liking and everybody’s liking because of how diverse the Wiki is.
@starwarsnerd1004 жыл бұрын
@@aplaceholdername901 I respectively disagree. First of all, you say there was no mystery for early SCPS, but the examples you list all have mysteries. (Why is the "sickness" the plague doctor is trying to cure? Why does the lizard hate life? Why does 96 hate it's face being seen?) Second, you say there was no imagination to early SCPS, but then mention all the tales they inspired. The tales aren't crutches that hold up otherwise uninteresting articles. The tales exist because so many people found the articles interesting. That's not to say the early articles are the best or that long or complicated articles can't be good. (I've repeatedly praised 4000). But the simple ones can have their appeal and sometimes long or complicated articles are confusing or pretentious.
@aplaceholdername9014 жыл бұрын
@@starwarsnerd100 I have to say, if you like the older SCPs, I’m completely fine with that. As a person who considers themselves to be very creative, the most mind-invoking and thought-provoking are the more emotional and narrative-based SCP stories, not the ‘what if this happens’ SCPs, or the ‘oh that is cool’ kind of SCPs. Some examples are Red Reality, A World of Two Artists, The Hanged King (and the city of Alagadda), Forget-Me-Not, A Voice Behind Me, Attempts to Assassinate Thought, This Thing a Quiet Madness Made, Daleport, The Montauk House, I Am At The Center Of Everything That Happens To Me, O, Death, Blood and The Breaking of My Heart, Such Black Light and a lot more. As you have probably noticed, most of them include a long, interesting narrative or idea, and none of them were the earlier SCPs like 049, 096, 008, 682, 610, or 683, because the story writing in those were bland (with exceptions, like The Architect). Although it may have inspired many and brought them into SCP (and there’s a lot of tales written about them too), Series 1 SCPs just do not have this artistic and creative strength the later SCPs have as the Wiki evolved. I like that you mentioned SCP 4000, which I do find very amusing because of the concept of names and the power they hold (which isn’t a novel concept, but it is twisted in such a way it really fits into the world of SCP). However, I also realise that although SCP 4000 was good, it should’ve been expanded to include more backstory, not because the original needed to have content, but because it was so great. The way DJKaktus introduces the faerie forest into his own universe as another civilisation a long time ago, or how Blood And The Breaking Of My Heart shows that it’s a place of primeval power and where an all-powerful god question entity resides is an amazing way to add more to the narrative. “Sometimes long or complicated articles are confusing or pretentious”. I absolutely agree, but I also agree that if it was written by very good writers (who typically write the long and complicated articles) they shouldn’t be confusing or pretentious, but if they are confusing or pretentious and it wasn’t the objective, The Exploring Series can explain everything (I love this channel). If it was their absolute intention to do so, The Exploring Series can still help us figure out what the heck the SCPs mean, then everything will make sense.
@aplaceholdername9014 жыл бұрын
@@starwarsnerd100 I hold my belief that there isn’t much imagination in the more popular and older SCPs on the site. I think I didn’t properly phrase it previously. What I meant was the SCPs themselves were not creative and are the most boring articles to read, but they can and usually do inspire many to extend their stories and fill in their narrative plot holes. The SCP itself, without all the tales supporting it, clearly has little effort put into it (compared to something like 1730, or 5555) and feels lacklustre. I do however agree that if an SCP is too complicated, I don’t like it either, like pattern screamers, a couple of antimemes and some pataphysics. As for mysteries, why don’t you read some of the Series 6 entries and compare it those you mentioned. Why does the lizard hate life? Because it’s a plot hole even comic book writers know how to fix (might have been a little harsh there, sorry). Also if others find that those SCPs are more interesting, it’s fine by them, but I do feel like I have a duty to convince people otherwise because of how much SCPs have inspired me creatively and is the main reason I am interested in horror.

I'd love an scp kind of role playing game where you pick classes based on the different Groups of interest. Like your working for the foundation but used to work for another one Like say there's a sarcik class where you can regenerate health and deal lots of melee damage Or Church of the broken god where you have cyber augmentation so you can tank more damage and maybe game stat boosts to certain weapons Maybe a former AWCY member could attack using anomalous art I also had the idea that a former Unusual incidents unit would have high luck or something lol And former Fifthists would have high charisma being able to turn enemies into allies but having low health. Just some ideas I have anyone have any other ideas for other GOI's?

just send a note to wondertainment saying that immersion would be improved by giving the game amnestic qualities that make it so anyone not part of the foundation forgets all annomolouse properties and missremembers all anomolous entities and secrets. boom, version update.
@GoatHerdt4 жыл бұрын
I wonder, would that feature make it technically “self containing?” It’s possible the foundation still would consider it an info breach due to the existence of Mnestics, as well as people resistant to amnestics. I could see benefits to the foundation keeping the only copy of the game; Training of security guards and other combatives. The events of the game seem to have no bearing on reality, but seems to provide at least somewhat useful skills.
