So many great little stories about this. Ron Pearlman giving feedback on the script, then accepting it after some rewrites. The violin story, the fact that they shot in 2 chunks to accommodate schedules. Just love this channel and all the info we get on underappreciated films.

LOL!! I bought the dvd of this film over five years ago and it has been in the mix of my collection untouched, unopened with the shrinkwrap still tightly sealed. I literally stopped this video 30 seconds in to go open and watch the dvd. I'm done watching it and yep, it's a great movie. Thanks for finally getting me to open it, Cecil.

Y'know...I feel like this is what's missing from the video rental store era. Back then, I remember walking into a store and just grabbing anything that looked interesting. It didn't matter if it was something nobody had ever heard of, all films were presented on the shelf equally. Now? I never hear about these little gems, I never see them anywhere, if not for shows like yours it wouldn't even exist. It's hard to find something like this without actively looking through Netflix for weird shit. It's harder for things to catch your eye. I feel like the death of rental stores damaged film. I mean...If something like Evil Dead were released today, would anyone even know?
@chancepaladin6 жыл бұрын
I remember seeing this in the bargain bin, and I think we picked it up but never got to watch it before we had to sell our collection. :-( now I really regret it. The box art always looked great. I guess I was worried it would be one of those with awesome boxart but total garbo. :(
@1212Artemis6 жыл бұрын
AkuTenshiiZero I absolutely agree with you. It's like now we're only allowed to watch what we are given (shitty blockbusters and the random indie). I wholeheartedly miss the days where you can go into your local video store and find a HUGE selection of movies that actually appeal to YOU. I loved going into blockbuster, it was such an enjoyable experience. I especially loved the horror, foreign and drama sections, with their random selection of movies that I would never have known of, had the video store not existed. I know there are two blockbuster stores still open in Texas, but that isn't doing me any good in Cali. I also miss Borders. But at least we have Barnes and Noble. Same can't be said for Blockbuster. It is such a shame. Hopefully one day, someone will open something for us again!!
@sincitysinner92396 жыл бұрын
I miss blockbuster too, it was so awesome. Every Friday night we would go to Blockbuster and rent a stack of movies as well as 2 video games for the weekend. Like you said, going to Blockbuster wasn't just going and getting movies, it was the experience. Waiting to go on Friday night and being able to hold a physical copy of a movie and read the description was a really fun time. People nowadays are sort of disconnected from the fun of discovering new and older movies. You can sit there and browse through thousands of movies on Netflix, but you tend to completely overlook movies because you have access to thousands of movies, so nobody knows what it's like anymore not being able to watch a movie because it was all checked out, so you appreciate movies more when you get the last copy on the shelf. Streaming services are definitely fucking amazing as having instant access to movies is great, but going to Blockbuster and finding movies and not getting to see a specific movie if it was all checked out made it all the more satisfying when you do eventually get a copy of it. I didn't know anywhere outside of Alaska had blockbusters still. There is a blockbuster in Alaska that is always super busy because the internet in Alaska is extremely spotty and there are huge areas with zero internet, so the blockbuster there is always fucking slammed with people renting movies because they can't watch Netflix.
@1212Artemis6 жыл бұрын
SinCity Sinner I completely agree with you. I just loved Blockbuster!! But I am not a fan of Netflix or anything instant, they just don't do it for me, as I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Physically going there, personally choosing my movie, and holding a physical copy of it. It was a pleasure for the senses, lol. I was wrong in my post, I read last year that there was a store left in Texas. But apparently, there is only one store left here in America, and it is in Bend, Oregon. Does that mean the locations over there in Alaska have closed? Sucks if it is true.
@Stand_By_For_Mind_Control6 жыл бұрын
Good point, but to play devil's advocate if you're looking on YT for indie trailers you can go a lot deeper down the rabbit hole than any mom & pop video store was ever going to do you. Plus, once Blockbuster came and murdered all the mom & pop shops they weren't exactly carrying all the esoteric shit. 8000 copies of Good Will Hunting, but if some douche never returned A Clockwork Orange they often never replaced it.

That Glenn McQuaid was able to turn a short film into a much bigger project, and negotiate Pearlman, Monahan and Scrimm into the movie around their schedules is impressive for someone who's "only" tangentially involved in movies as a title animator for a smaller studio. I actually have had I Sell The Dead for a couple of years as it came in a 4 movie zombie themed set that IFC released alongside Dead Snow, Pontypool and Doghouse (not all these are zombie movies obviously) for xXx-Mas. I always put off watching it as the brief blurb on the back of the case didn’t grab me and gave me the impression it might’ve been the weakest movie in the set. It wasn’t until this past October when I did my annual 31 Days, 31 Movies horror movie celebration that I finally watched it and immediately regretted that I held out on it for as long as I had. The movie is truly unique and deserves to be more known than it currently is.

Your review of the "Dark Song" movie made me watch it - I was very impressed with what they managed to achieve considering the budget, especially the earlier parts. Would you consider doing a video on horror movies that were (relatively) cheap to make, yet turned out impressive? At least the ones you would consider noteworthy. I find that lower budgets sometimes produce incredible results.

Thank you very much for this video. I would really like to see videos about some of Ti Wests work, like the mentioned The Roost. Another movie I would recommend is The Dark Country, directed by Thomas Jane. A very underrated homage to things like The Twillight Zone and David Lynch with a great visual style, even though it was made with a very limited budget. However Ron Perlman and Thomas Jane also star in it.
