There's actually confirmation for this in-game. In the game files there's a number that says "don't change to 1", changing it to 1 gets you a snarky comment from lucifer when you open the game. If you change it to 2, however, lucifer explains in Hopeless soul's voice that "Sometimes I talk in other voices. Don't tell dad!". This might also imply that all the bosses in Pony Island are just lucifer "Speaking in different voices".

Since we started talking about Leszy I just need to add that he is technically a Slavic demon (demon here is less Christian and could be more accurately described as fay creature but it could be of use that we call them that), unlike his Ent-looking cousin, who works on Lorax rules and won't harm you if you respect forest, Leszy is a creature that tends to seemingly for no reason will get you lost in a forest or lead you out of it. He is also often described as a pale, white man with black, long hair, tangled in twigs and evil eyes who is as tall as the tallest tree in the forest he lives in, which always forces him to crouch. In the beliefs of other Slavs, he is described as a shapeshifter or associated with missing one half of a set of body parts (like an eye) also often compared to the devil as a deceiver by Russians. Now that is nearly one-to-one of what Leshy does here (aside from black hair but seeing how it's not even black in the art Floppy showed, you might get it's super different across regions). Up until we see him as just this feeble old man he seems like a giant terrifying forest creature. If nothing else it's a cool play on folklore but if we are going with the "the old death cards are devs" angle I propose that it has something to do with the other Americanized Polish surname of Kaminski perhaps his part of the creative input seeing how the rest of the game of Inception (animals and characters) feel so decidedly American
@FisOffline11 ай бұрын
At 3:26:22 it's mentioned that the "Leshy uses his wildlife camera to capture beasts" which piqued my interest. I wanted to point out that there are some parallels between a camera and a gun, you can "aim/point" and "shoot" a camera. There also exists a "Chronophotographic gun", according to wikipedia: "The chronophotographic gun is one of the ancestors of the movie camera. It was invented in 1882 by Étienne-Jules Marey, a French scientist and chronophotographer. It could shoot 12 images per second and it was the first invention to capture moving images on the same chronomatographic plate using a metal shutter." The reason why a parallel between wildlife photography and hunting sprung to my mind is because I've seen a Soviet cartoon called "Three from Prostokvashino", and one of the characters, a dog, uses a chronophotographic gun and acts akin to a hunter. I don't know where Daniel Mullins is from and I doubt that he's seen said cartoon, but regardless I think the thematic link is neat.

I may be getting floppy with it, but the numbers needed to get the roll of film could be a reference to 0451, a common calling card of the Immersive Sim genre. The first passcode protected door in Deus Ex uses the code and it was a reference to a code used in the Ion Storm's office. Subsequent games in the genre also use that code for their first locked door. Now I don't know why that would be referenced in Inscryption, but it's the only connection that comes to mind.

The only reason I was turned off by them was because when this video first came out, I sent it to my sister’s boyfriend. He got me interested in Inscryption yet he never finished it, with a negative outlook on the game overall, so I thought he’d be interested in the overlapping story. The skits are a delight, but when I first got to them, I worried that he'd be weirded out by them with no prior context, idk if it has a name but I get really anxious when sharing things I like with others, and if I THINK they don’t like it, I start liking it less. On a tangent, I think I'm starting to grow out of this mindset with my recent love of Batman cartoons, specifically BTAS currently, Alfred is the goat

3:13:30 I disagree. It does point to Kaycee being much more involved in Inscryption than the other devs and Kaycee likely already had a mod when Daniel Mullins was writing the story of the game, but Kaycee’s mod was not planned as a postgame where you actually get the full Inscryption act 1 experience. This is because Mullins assumed people would play Inscryption for the Arg and story, but many many people bought inscryption because of the Act 1 atmosphere, without knowing it was a fake out and without knowing “the guy who made Pony Island” made the game. When Mulling discovered that he actually made a game and that everyone wanted him to fully realise Inscryption Act 1, he released Kaycee’s mod as a stand-alone thing, separate from the story

Apparently in Act 1 the Moon doesn't have the sigil that makes it immune to Death Touch/Deadly or whatever its called (Doing damage always Kills an opposing card)and Smelly (-1 ATK to card opposing this card), infact Leshy has a line of dialogue about how Smelly negates his strategy. Only reason i found this out is because during the first 30min of this video i was like "You know what? I heard theres a console port of Inscryption, I wonder how well it works, i got eshop money for Christmas and love the Kaycee's mod portion of the game, it'd be really fun to playthrough on the go" so i bought it on my switch, and actually beat the bears using a 6/6 Oroboros with the Hourglass item during the 2nd phase of the Trapper/Trader. This was honestly an amazing combo: play Inscryption on my switch while watching an awesome brake down of it, thanks! Good luck with covering Act 2 and 3! Also little thing that not many player know, but you can use cards other than the Ring Worm to poison the campfire. Keyword is Poison, deadly cards/Death Touch- whatever, they work also. So if you have a useless Adder or Long Elk, that'll also work

I cannot wait for Act 2! I love your storytelling and the humor and all the "crazy theories" that you throw out there (though in this franchise, it's hard to tell what's out there and what isn't). As a budding creator myself, it's really inspiring to watch you grow and watch your videos get better and better. Editing is the part I struggle with most, and you do it so well! I don't even know how many dozens and dozens of hours went in to making this. I wouldn't be surprised if you got into triple digits, actually. Just wanted to let you know that we see the hard work you're doing, and from where I stand it looks like it's all paying off!

3:29:40 gonna get a lil floppy with it here, but i find something interesting about the safe code, grimmora, and the hopeless soul's password. 2734, the password 273, the safe code 4, a number closely associated with death, grimmora's domain. not much meaning to it, just a lil somthin-somthin. excellent video as always; i'm going to go play the hell out of kaycee's mod again now.

About Leshy's name and it's meaning, it's hard to translate, but it would indeed mean "the man of the forest" or something to this accord. In my language the proper spelling of Leshy's name would be "Leszy". They're generally guardian spirits of deep forests, and they're very moody creatures. If one was to get lost in the forest, a leszy could just as much guide them out, or chase them deeper into the woods, depending on their relationship with humans and individual personality. However, the other two names you mentioned sound like "leśnik" and "leśniczy" respectively, and while they would translate simmilarily to "leszy", they are specifically referring to normal people's jobs. "Leśnik" and "leśniczy" mean the same thing, and that's an occupation, that's a little obsolete nowadays. They rougly translate as "the guy working in the forest". The job is something between a forest ranger and a lumberjack. Probably depending on a region and type of forest, leśniczy could also be known as "gajowy", "las" being a general name for a forest and "gaj" being specifically a small, dense group of leafy trees. A leśniczy may have hunt animals for meat, chopped wood, hunted big predators that may have endangered local villagers, and left out food for larger herbivores in winter, but today they mostly focus on raising saplings and making sure dumbass kids and other pests don't make a mess in public forests.

I’m only in the intro skit now, but the production of your videos is always amazing. I love that you have a catchy theme tune and you even have ambient background music of that theme for your skits! Your work never ceases to astound and inspire, my man. ❤ I look forward to learning the secrets of the Mullens-verse!

Flawpea you did it again! So excited to see every last morsel of mystery and intrigue in Inscryption laid bare on the whiteboard. I really enjoyed the discussions of strategy and Leshy’s game philosophy. The difference in the scribes’ approach to their game was initially somewhat lost on me, as I’m not a TCG player. I feel that understanding their philosophies is crucial to fully “get” their characters and the story of Inscryption. The game development process holds much thematic importance in the Mullinsverse after all. On another note, thank you for your engaging and thoughtful approach to media analysis. The consistent love, excitement, and positivity you bring to your work is such a breath of fresh air in this era of algorithm-fed negativity. I’m wishing the best for you and your channel in 2024 and I’m proud to say I was here before 50k :)

this is very exciting for me, I haven't played pony island or the hex (just haven't had the time yet), but a friend got me inscryption as a gift. i spent so many hours in leshys game (kaycees mod sweep) and also really dug into the rest of the arg (something i never really do. im just not very into ARGs, id much rather just deal with a straightforward story and complicated subtext and themes. I'm into interpretation not decryption) so this is the first in your mullensverse series of videos that i come into with full context!! i love your art man, your style is lovely and i love your skits and characters meditating on the themes and elements you're analyzing. i always look forward to watching what you post.

Business/supply chain PhD student and uni tutor here! at 2:25:00 - the answer is "vertical integration". Horizontal integration is when a company acquires a company at the same point in the supply chain (i.e., if a grocery store bought another grocery store) whereas vertical integration is when a company acquires another company either before or after them in the supply chain (i.e., if a grocery store bought a manufacturer for a certain product). Because Game Funa is supplying Game Works, and then Game Works is supplying Cam Works, they would be "before or after" each other in the supply chain, making it vertical integration. I understand the confusion though, becuase, if you were to map out this supply chain "horizontal integration" would "appear as vertical" (i.e., you're buying a company above you on the diagram), and vice versa (where "vertical integration" would "appear as horizontal" because the acquired companies are to the left/right of them).

you know what? not having finished the video (but knowing a lot of the funny secrets in inscryption), i've only just now realized that the "crypt" part of inscryption is important actually. also (again, not having finished the video), hope that you also cover "Sacrifices must be made", the... prototype? of inscryption.

I noticed while watching that the bodies you see when you finally trap Leshy in a card look a lot like the protagonist from Walk (from the Hex). The hat and noir-like clothes as well as the first person pov. It may be unimportant, but I found it interesting.

Jesus Christ, I may have just encountered the best channel on youtube. The amount of work, research, heart and personality put into this is second to none. Thank you for making this video, and the other parts as well, the second part I am watching as we... or well, I speak. I loved playing Inscryption, and loved finding out how deep this game really goes I'm amazed at how many themes I didn't pick up on, and you have mentioned and explored Once again, thank you for all the time and effort put into this video, and this channel, never change Flawed Peacock

Wanted to add one more thing about the title. It also includes the word "crypt," which fits the fact that all of the characters and code are dead in one way or another. By opening the game, you are opening the "crypt" and interacting with the dead. And in the end you close the crypt and allow them to rest

Leshy sounds like Leszy in Polish. Leszy means a lich. You know, undead magician/ necromancer. Edit: You are right. It's a pale, weird dude of the forest, not a lich. Which in polish means licz. Edit: On further research, Leszy was of ambiguous morality. He was definitely anatgonistic towards lumberjacks and hunters, however if you did not harm the forest, sometimes he would allow you to find your way out if you were lost in it. Sometimes he would even make wild animals run from you, so you were protected. Something like Orion from Warhammer lore.

@Petruschin It's weird to say this, but the whiteboard adds a lot, and he just has more personality. Peacock's voice is more dynamic, he allows himself to go into weirder flows, and his writing is just more solid. Also there's less extended talking at camera here. It's broken up a lot more.
