I find the Salome reference very interesting. Because Salome's story is that the king asked her to dance in exchange of anything she wanted. She then danced and asked for John Baptist's head *because her mother told her to*. Both the dancing and what she asked for where her mother's instructions and wants, even if she herself had nothing against John.

Also fun about the witches cutting Suzy's hair, though this could completely unintentional. It was common folk belief, not everywhere of course but in many places, that a witch's power came from their hair. This is why in several witch trials that took place, women were shaved head to toe in order to deny them any of the devil's power while imprisoned. Of course the witches are taking Suzy's hair as a taglock, a magical connection that will give them power of her. But taking her hair could also be seen as in some way trying to limit Suzy's own power. Similar ideas were spread across many cultures, the significance of hair. It is not only tied to spiritual and otherworldly connection, but to one's own personhood, an idea we can still relate to today.

This film leaning more into dance than the original was such a great choice. Dance is such a visceral art form that lends itself to horror beautifully. They really push the natural body horror that it already kind of is to its absolute limit with the Olga/Sarah sequences and I adore it for that so much. The switch to a more contemporary style from ballet also gives it such a unique, bestial flavor that really sells how this coven worships a primordial entity that existed before there were even humans to dance. It evokes the movements of animals crawling on their bellies in the dirt, so much so that you know exactly what Suzy means when she mentions that it reminded her of animals fucking. The choreography is such that the viewer can come to that conclusion themself before she even says anything about it and I think that's so impressive! The general vibes of the dance are spot on, but I also really enjoyed your deeper analysis of the more specific pieces of choreography. Also, amazing catch about Klemperer and Anke's papers. The conclusion to his story always left me feeling unsatisfied, like I was missing something, and it turns out that I totally was! I never considered taking anything the fake Anke says as fact, but that's a very intriguing conclusion. Was really looking forward to this one and you did not disappoint. Great work!

Im just starting out my adult life, and oh every desicion i make feels so scary and like im doing something wrong. Their particular "cosmic" sound has been massively influential, incl. on the score to this very film. TD are best known now for a) inspiring the Stranger Things music, and b) their scores for Grand Theft Auto V, Risky Business and other films; but their 1970s albums are still openly revered.

Volke is very much meant to be a fascistic work. The german "Volk" while being a german cognate of "Folk" obviously, is also the idea of the rustic, good christian, often rural "folk" idealized by Nazi ideology. The idea being that jews and other marginalized diverse groups were traditionally associated with the urban and metropolitan areas. This all plays perfectly well into the Nazi symbology present in the character of Miss Blanc, her dance Volke, and Susie's red, black and white theming during it. Hope this was clear and helpful! It makes me think that Markos may have made Blanc miscarry at some point or sterilized her, and that Blanc longs for a child, but hides it with her hate of men. She begins to show more of a motherly role towards Susanna after this.

1:39:20 the diagram looks like amateur dance notation, so that tracks with the interpretation. There are some examples online that are so gorgeous to look at, you can almost feel how the dance would take place just by looking at them! Some notation systems look a lot like occult sigils or runes too. As a fan of the original as well as the remake, my favourite part of this movie is that they made the art of dance directly connected to the witches and their spellcasting, whereas in the original it felt only circumstantial that the witches were using a ballet school as a cover. I love Argento's, but this remake is so meaty and unique, it feels like a completely new movie, I wouldn't even want to call it a remake. A sequel to this would be amazing! So happy to have found your channel, you are very charming and have a wonderful presentation style, hats off to you!

I have never clicked on a video faster. I hold a near obsession with Suspiria and I love the way you present your essays. Too many times have I cornered friends to listen to the original soundtrack by Goblin while frantically explaining the connections between Suspiria and 'Levana and Our Ladies of Sorrow' from 'Suspiria de Profundis', especially the conflict between Mater Suspiriorum and the younger Mater Tenebrarum. The Three Mothers trilogy carries such raw themes. Your videos are a wonderful simulacrum of those kinds of encounters and I mean that with a sense of shared passion of the topic. This was a spectacular piece as always. One of the things that always comes through with your videos is your personal investment in the subject matter. I hope that you continue to follow that fervor and what fascinates you for your video topics. I'm commenting again because I had a thought™ Tilda Swinton plays both the Doctor and Markos (besides Blanc), both old people. But the way she portrays their breathing is so different, and it showcases the nature of both characters. The Doctor's voice is raspy and his breathing comes out hard, like he's forcing his lungs to work harder than they would naturally. This is normal for an old person, his breathing is shortening with time, ever closer to his proverbial and literal last breath. He is an old man, nothing more. One weighed down by his guilt, but not someone who revels in wickedness. Markos, on the other hand. Her breathing comes out harsh and raspy, forcing lungs that ought to be long dead to keep working. And I have to sing Tilda Swinton's praises here in particular, she made Markos talk and breathe as if she was enjoying every stolen breath. As if she knew she should be dead long ago, but takes pleasure in feeling herself continuing to exist. But not in a way where she seems happy to be alive, where she revels in her own strenght. Because that strenght is not her own. It's stolen. And THAT is what she revels in. Her cruelty, portrayed masterfully even in how she BREATHES.

I'd like to note that there's a decent bit of christian symbolism at play in the movie as well! I believe that it could lend an explanation for the deal with Griffin and eventually Tanner that you were looking for. I think Griffin/Tanner represent scapegoats in the biblical sense, the one upon which the sins of all others are placed upon, and then summarily punished (often banished) for those sins to cleanse the flock and allow them a clean slate. I think because Tanner seemed to be the most devout to Markos, she was chosen by mother suspiriorum to be the scapegoat that would be punished for the crimes of the Markosites. It could also be why Griffin seems to exoerience a much tamer echo of the effects of Olga's punishment for leaving the company, as well as being in the periphery but usually seperate from the dancers (like in her little balcony area). I'd also like to note the distinct way Madame Blanc gives Susy her boon (which looks v much like the shimmer that Susy sees for the rest of the movie) in the beginning, the hands and feet, very reminiscent of stigmata (the wounds of christ). Christ is also seen as the ultimate scapegoat in christian lore, and we see Susy's mother refer to her as "my sin, a stain upon the world" and Susy is at least in the eyes of her mother, not her daughter, socially banished from her family and eventually literally leaving it. Later in the film, however, when Susy has embraced her role as suspiriorum, she is shown holding one of the dancers in the pose of la pieta, Mary cradling christ -her child's- body. An interesting shift, starting as the child and ending as the mother. Though this could simply be implying that Susy and Suspiriorum are not the same entity, and suspiriorum has fully overtaken susy, which is very evident by the everything about that scene. Also if I were to get a bit floppy with it (thanks for the new phrase), then looking at it through a christian lore lens, its possible that the shimmer is the holy spirit part of the trinity, and at the end we are seeing Susy, suspiriorum, and the shimmer revealing themselves as 3 hands of one entity, not unlike a version of christianity's holy trinity? Also resurrection of a dead person specifically stated to be a loved one and christ allegory making madame blanc into a lazarus/mary magdeline mashup figure might be something? I think that may be the floppiest of my reads lmao but it's interesting to me all the same My friends say I'm great at the noticing stuff part, but not the tying things thogether part, so forgive me if this is all nonsense lol. This movie was such a wild ride tbh. It took the general idea the original offered and built on it in a way that I honestly felt like it was the version the original wanted to portray, but couldn’t due to a lack of budget or inability to consider how to do it. I found that, in the entire film, we are seeing how the school has finally come to be in the presence of a woman who was the “true” Mother. Her kindness, quiet nature and natural talent was something that was long awaited but not accepted by those in power for so long. Something about the long standing “power” held, made it harder for them to release it. It made them selfish. In a sense, it made them more unworthy. In the end, when she’s telling the husband about his wife. Even though she’s telling him this sad and heartbreaking truth, she’s still so maternal. She’s so loving. Warm. It’s an example of why she was the the choice to give to the Mother. This movie is *chefs kiss* Also, if you have a nervous laugh like I do, watch the original. There’s a deadass awkward moment of everyone sleeping (or trying to) in the main area and the head of the school is just SNORING like a Sith Lord and it’s funnier cause all you see is this shadow of her? It’s… it’s so perfectly executed and made me laugh longer than it should have (Just fyi my laughing should never be peak comedy. I laughed at What Happened to Baby Jane cause no one told me it wasn’t a comedy. I thought it was a dark comedy. I was wrong. 10/10 watch under the false impression that it’s a comedy tho. Makes the ending even more hilarious.)

You’ve done it again FP! As a woman I can’t help but remember how it’s said that a woman’s history is told through their foremothers unlike men and their forefathers. I think in that context, this was why this movie was a successful remake of the original “Suspiria.” Btw, Suspiriorum is the oldest of the Three Mothers and the fact that she’s passed onto a member of the current generation in the film makes sense. You can even read the Three Mothers as symbolic of the Triple Goddess/Hecate/The Fates who grant death and represent the phases of womanhood to humanity. The three girls saying they wish for death at the end can be interpreted as them accepting Susie/Suspiriorum as their Mother, as Suspiriorum would represent the “crone.” However, you can also read it as the three girls rejecting the “maiden”/“mother” part of the Three Goddess who represents life (Madam Blanc) too which is why they are killed like the rest of the women who are with Marko (Marko representing death that is), the previous incarnation of the Three Goddess. I also would just like to recommend the movie “Come True” (2020). I think you’ll really like this unconscious romp of a film!

Another fantastic analysis! It's odd but the first time I saw this movie I wasn't any more aware of the hostage situation story and then literally just a few weeks ago I did a bit of a deep dive on it and man is it such a messed up story. Like, think very recently post 9/11 American talking heads on Fox News levels of nationalist propaganda and xenophobic scapegoating. I know you mentioned about how that lawyer had to flee Germany, it was because they were threatening to pass a law making it that even a defense lawyer could be counted as culpable in the very act of providing a defense! Personally, I'm American so it's not like I've never seen absurdly blatant miscarriages of justice but learning about that history on this side of the George W. presidency makes it all the more shocking to hear the EXACT SAME SCRIPT about "fighting terrorism" in 1970s Germany. To my interpretation, I think Markos represents that old Nazi history still parasitically feeding off the German people in the 70s (HEY I ALSO LEARNED THAT MANY OF THE POLITICIANS IN POWER THEN WERE FORMER NAZIS ISN'T THAT GREAT AND DOESN'T THAT JUST SAY SO MUCH) with Blanche representing the conservative party of Germany at the time which in it's actions and philosophies was no where near removed enough from Nazism to lead the nation towards any sort of healing or progression forward. There's probably more of this political analysis waiting for someone better educated than myself but I think that's where your last whiteboard that you struggled to fully realize may lead to!

Your 4+ hour long videos, really shows how hard it is to explain surreal themes using narration. It really puts surreal film and media into perspective, and shows how well good visuals and story can convey the directors or programmers vision better than a written or oral story ever could. ala suspiria, inland empire, twin peaks, memento, who’s lila, you name it. Your channel might as well cover anything surreal at this point, your synopsis are always thourough and in depth but these last two videos are great stuff dude!

This video is awesome! You have a real knack for breaking down big fancy philosophy; you legitimately have a better understanding of Jung and Lacan than some other students in my advanced english classes.I watched this movie before and was so confused about the breathing. It unsetlled me in the movie, I had a real brain blast moment when you explained it. I've watched all of your videos and this one is just as chef's kiss as your others. You've got allot of passion for your topics and it really shows! Makes it SUPER fun to watch. :) PS: I was looking at that book patricia had in her diary and I think its about Lacan's theory of "imaginary" things. I think the ending of that would be something like "blurs the lines between the symbolic and the real". TLDR; "imaginary" here is something controlled by a person's unconscious mind. things are "imaginary" when someone confuses the "Real" and the "Symbolic" An example of someone suffering from psychosis will look at reality (the "Real") and think it represents something beyond what it is -- for example paranoid delusions. And example of someone confusing the "Symbolic" for the "Real" are people who suffer from severe anxiety believing they have an illness so intensely that actual physical symptoms start showing up. I hope that explains it... I'm not as good as you at breaking these things down lol

Extremism, no matter where on the political spectrum, is always destructive. I think that is a running theme with both sides of the coven (along with the political real-life happenings.) You could go further and say that Suzy tries to escape the very strict bounds of her conservative upbringing to a new life as a dancer in the big city - just to end up in a different authoritarian regime. You pointed out the two sides of the coven going differently about the brutal jobs. Maybe the Markonites symbolising the almost businesslike evil of the Nazis, while the Blanconites show more of the joyful cruelty of other regimes? One isn’t better than the other, it’s just different. Moving from one ideology to another, even an opposing one, doesn’t guarantee you end up in a better place, just as following in your parents footsteps can lead you to the same terrible places as rejecting their ideas.

Just finished watching in a single sitting (I lead a very healthy lifestyle) and even for a movie that i didn't know existed until you decided to cover, I enjoyed it almost as much as your previous projects. I admire your vulnerability when discussing delicate manners, it's a pretty refreshing demeanor to present a video essay in, where many i've seen tend to shield themselves in agressive comedy, for example. Can't wait to watch this. I find Suspiria to be massively underrated and would probably be a modern masterpiece if it wasn't sharing the name with such a highly regarded classic. The "dance" scene is one of the most difficulty to watch scenes ever put on film and Dakota Johnson really captures both the intensity and innocence needed for her role. This is a reading I haven't seen before and after your previous vids (and the length of this one) I know I'm in for a great ride. Kudos!

Late to the pass, but SO glad I took multiple sittings to get through this. I was able to absorb all of your ideas and thoughts that way! I loved every minute of it; you have a great balance of humour and respect for somber scenes and themes. Won't just mirror everyone else's adoration for this video, because they've all voiced my thoughts better than I can -- but I will thank you very much for the content warning at the beginning. Not the gore, sexual violence - but the theme of parental abuse. It's very small and probably meaningless to some, but for a once-victim like me, it felt nice to be pointed at and told that it's alright to still be sensitive to the topic. i pulled up the film to rewatch the last scene since it was censored and with your explanations in mind (haha get it) and as a companion while i watched that ending scene it gave the movie a great different interpretation! ive only seen the film once and it was pretty amazing but a lot of abstract ideas fly over my head in the moment so i wanted to say bravo here for breaking down the symbols and potential interpretations of the set/characters in a way that supports the media itself!
