If you're looking at where to live in Britain, or where to visit this weekend, Ipswich Suffolk may be of interest as it is one of the oldest towns in the UK. The area has been occupied since the Anglo-Saxons. Ipswich Waterfront is a modern thriving marina, full of great restaurants and bars. But the area has been used for trade since the 7th century. Our walking tour starts at the Ipswich Waterfront marina and takes us through the heart of the historic Ipswich town centre. If you plan to visit Ipswich, then our walking tour from the modern Ipswich Waterfront to the historic town centre with it's Tudor alleyways, makes a simple and handy guide to Ipswich's attractions. Hope you enjoy your staycation in Ipswich in 4k.

Love Ipswich, it’s a great town. Lots of history around the marine area. Its industrial stamp is located worldwide. Like many towns and cities in the UK, it’s trying to reinvent itself after the industrial revolution. That takes generations not decades. Cambridge and Norwich, didn’t have the industry Ipswich had, so those places don’t have to change like Ipswich is doing right now… Once the waterfront is complete and connects to the town better (‘The link project’) it will be a very smart town. It will happen one day. Ipswich has a bright future. It’s just a bit stuck at the moment.

Well hello there Dry Lunch (I love your name BTW) I quite agree that Ipswich is a great town with history in abundance. As you say many towns and cities in the UK are trying to reinvent themselves. I hope that Ipswich does itself justice once the waterfront is complete. I didn't know about ‘The link project’, that sounds like a rather good idea. I look forward to seeing that. Thank you for dropping by, I value that. I have a couple of hundred other walks here! so if you ever feel like another meander you won't go short of destinations. All the best to you.

I lived 10 mins from Ipswich a couple of decades ago. I really loved living in this part of the world. Ipswich has some really pretty parts and the area has beautiful countryside, near the sea, lots of history, and very nice cultural and craft spaces dotted around the countryside. Not sure how much it might have changed, although friends and family in the area are still happy there. I would move back to the area in a heartbeat.

I moved to Ipswich about a year and a half ago (for the second time) it's a lovely town with much to recommend...historic buildings and spacious parks, its extremely close to coast ( it sits on estuary) and countryside. Town centre needs work( as do most) and certain areas are not great, however I really like it and feel at home.

So nice watching this! I grew up not far from Ipswich and some of the biggest moments in my life were spent there - dating, nights out, time spent walking through the park in the summer. I’ve since moved quite far away and sometimes get this overwhelming urge to visit so this was lovely to watch and to almost feel as though I’m back there!

Ipswich was my home town. Moved there from the country when I was Five. The streets used to be cram packed with traffic! Seeing it here, it looks like a ghost town, with no traffic. A lot of the buildings I knew, have gone, including my old school, Tower Ramparts. In my days, the docks were working, and the sailing barges shipped goods between Ipswich and Europe. One of my school mates worked on one. My college teacher was waxing lyrical about the sails, and how sad it was that they were being converted to diesel. My mate said the sooner his boat was converted, the better he'd like it!. It used to have Ransome and Rapier, close to the docks, a factory that made the biggest walking Draglines in the world. Gone many years now! It also had a brewery, and maltings. The maltings have all been converted to flats, and the brewery, another casualty. Even my college, Ipswich Civic College, built brand new in 1960 has gone! Used to go paddling at Freston as a kid. Loads of memories! .

I agree it’s sad to see it this way. I was there in 2008 most people I met were not from Ipswich all transplants. Most were unemployed due to all businesses being turned into condos no one can afford. Most of the retail is gone. Very sad. Thank you for sharing. I went to Nacton Road Girls school. Was the last class to leave there ( graduate) 1969.
@niklar55
@niklar55 3 ай бұрын
@@christhompson7547 I just chatted to a mate, who still lives there, and nearly all the big department stores are closed, and empty, together with many smaller businesses. Which is part of the reason its a ghost town. I used to cycle along Nacton Road past the airport on my way to ''Hallowtree'' boy scout camping ground. The Airport is now a housing estate, and now Ipswich, that had ambitions to become a city, doesn't have an airport, because Martlesham Heath, Bentwaters, a ready made airport, was also converted to a housing and industrial estate. _[More council tax from multiple houses]_ .

Alas, travelling around the country as we do, it's obvious so many of our British towns are seeing their centres hollowed out. It is sad to see local businesses disappear in the numbers they are...
@niklar55

@@LivingWalks I had a chat with an old schoolmate of mine, and he tells me that all but one of the big department stores have closed, and are empty. Many other shops have gone the same way. Supermarkets like, Asda, and Sainsburys have ''sucked them dry'' of customers. When I was a school kid, Sainsbury's was just a grocery shop in the main street. It got burgled, and the thieves used butter stacked around the safe, to deaden the sound. The kids who were rich enough to have paper money, were asking the other kids, if it smelled of butter.😊

I enjoyed this video. Being from Ipswich, which although it is a town is quite large, I know there are many more buildings and parks to see. I'd have liked to have seen Norman Foster's award winning building (purely because I worked there when it opened in 1975!) and has already been mentioned Christchurch Park especially the arboretums. I moved away to Somerset aged 21 many moons ago and I have heard people saying Ipswich is awful now but I still love it especially when you look up above the shops and see the amazing buildings built long ago

The department store closed were I worked has a window dresser. I visited the town a few years ago to reminisce,. I remember collecting a penny farthing bicycle and a bath chair from highway mansions NR bye and bags of leaves to put in the department store windows. With a card to say we're they were from . With permission from the mansions

It's a dump, served by an incompetent local authority. I left Ipswich in 2012 to live in in Norwich. Best decision I ever made. Suffolk is wonderful, but Ipswich is an eyesore.
