Exploring Jeeps - Soundbar Speaker Upgrade

Join us as we upgrade our soundbar speakers in our Jeep Wrangler JK Unlimited. We run through the entire proces of removing the soundbar, adding in Polyfill and even perfoming a trick to reduce low frequency resonance.

The sound bar speakers are supper easy to replace. It's the front speakers that are a total pain in the butt to replace. I have Kenwood speakers and tweeters in the dash, Polk Audio in the sound bar, a Pioneer 10" shallow woofer/enclosure in the cargo area that is powered by a Pioneer 400 watt amp. I'm using a Pioneer touch screen head unit to control everything. Sounds pretty damn amazing!

my niece just got her license and my sister got her the 4 door wrangler maybe ill take on an uncle & niece project challenge and ill surprise her with a speaker up-grade and teach her how to install the speakers so every time she turns on the radio she will remember that experience and she can say to her friends that she installed the speakers in her jeep

very easy..fronts took me about 20 minutes per side..i also poly filled all 4 speakers.. once you do the fronts it will sound even better..there also on sale on amazon for $60 with free shipping.. there are plenty of youtube videos on the fronts...dont be afraid...your be so happy with the final results..

Had the top off, with the new speakers. I like it a lot better. These get loud with less distortion than the base stock speakers.

I did both the soundbar and the ones in the dash with the mopar kicker kit. The dash is not as hard as you think. Take your time, find all the screws and take the passenger one out through the glove compartment opening. It actually came out out easier than the drivers but the biggest addition to the whole system was the polk db1001 tweeters I added to the factory tweeter speaker pods on the dash. These along with the 4 kickers made a HUGE difference in the sound. I will admit the tweeter install took longer than all 4 of the kickers but that is because the wires are hard to get to and you will need to add the crossover wiring harness that comes with the tweeters to install between the factory leads and the new tweeters. Not installing this will cause the tweeters to pop on song with a lot of bass. I tried it both ways and crossover is a must.Total cost from amazon for all 6 speakers was about 180.00

felix991, What model year Jeep do you have? Mine is a 2015, and the tweeters are supposed to be harder to get to. I guess the tombstone ones were much easier on earlier models. Good information though. I agree I need to do the dash speakers too. Good advice on the crossover. Thanks.

Yep, its a 2013. They are different however yours are probably easier and will use the same polks I used. Plenty of mid and high but still not enough lows so I went ahead and also added the 8 inch kicker 150 watt hideaway sub. They are on amazon for 205.00 which is really high but for the size, it is a worth every penny. It doesn't rattle the windows but it fills and gives a pretty good punch in all the music I was missing on on my old school rock however it was a biatch to wire in. You either need line level which the stock jeep doesn't have or you need to tap in to the factory speaker wires to feed it. Not so hard except JEEP deliberately cuts the bass to rear sound bar because of the size of the soundbar and it creates distortion and thats the bass you need to properly feed the sub. If you tap int these wires you will loose the bottom 200hz or more off the sub so I had to tap into the front speakers which are 100 percent full range. and the power wire has to go to the battery so you will have to route that as well. But I made it work in a few hours. It fits perfect under the rear cargo lid in that little nich for tools etc. You cant even tell it's in the jeep by looking

This upgrade did minimal change to soundbar. It worked exponentially in the front. It seems like the power to the rear speakers is missing from the Head unit.

I pulled the carpet out of my Wrangler and put some 50mil sound deadening material on the whole floor in the passenger area and on the floor of the cargo area, made it a lot quieter inside the cabin as far as road noise goes, but now I hear more of the wind noise.

I did the same as you, but I also put a headliner from HotHead Headliners on the hard top. now I don't hear the wind (as much) when driving on the highway at 75 mph. we can hold a conversation without yelling.

+S Dellinger Well since I posted last my wife totaled the Jeep. But I have another Wrangler now, only it's a Rubicon now. It's the same year as the first one, but the doors fit better and seal better on the "new" one. The first one was a rental in Hawaii, so I imagine it seen some abuse.

Good video. I noticed you did not unhook the tweeter. Have you heard of anyone disabling the tweeter since the kicker is a two way?

The sad part is that the new jeep (2018 JL) the sound bar spearkers are not that size so the kickers will not fit properly, lucky for me I am very handy so I will get them to fit by trimming the plastic around it a little more but all those companies selling this as replacements of the stock speakers are deceiving their customers...

I unplugged mine. I am running a clarion xc1410 using factory radio and 4 kicker 6.5 upgraded. Recommended notice dampening tape inside sound bar and pollyfil

Nice video! I am doing this whenever I receive my kickers. I have a 2017 JKU, and I noticed there are those little speaker looking things next to the speaker you replaced. What are those? Can you replace those too?

actually. you should unplug them. those are the tweeters. since you bought the new speakers. you do not need the separate tweeters. the speakers have tweeters in them. if you leave them in. it takes away or may add to the gain.

What year Jeep did you do this in? My understanding is the new Jeeps are supposed to have a really nice system with the new Alpine system in the 15 and 16 models.

Rich Beach I think it is standard on the 2016 Rubicon Hard rock edition. It was a $945 option for the upgraded speakers and subwoofer in the Rubicon. My Jeep is a 2015 Rubicon.

I did this same upgrade in my '15 JKU....now my dome light rattles horribly...any advice on how to alleviate that? I can't go past 11 on the volume without getting annoyed :)

Was it loose to begin with? Mine doesn't rattle at all. The Polly-fill that I put in didn't reach into the center. It physically couldn't get in towards the light to affect it. Is it just the additional bass from the larger speakers? Seems like this is magnifying a condition that was already there. Good information for others to look out for. Thanks!

I didn't replace the tweeters. I had more of an issue with bass and midrange, so I only changed those out. I think it was ok to leave them as is.

+Sylvain Beauchamp yeah, i'm not sure, I didn't replace those. The Kickers have a coaxial tweeter in there, so I figured I didn't need to. I have a lot to learn about Audio though. So if there is anyone else out there that knows anything about the Tweeters, or how they should be replaced, or disabled. Chime in here. Thanks!

It doesnt look like it but did you have any trouble removing the soundbar? I can't seem to undo the wire harness. It looks like there's an orange rubber insert thing that is stopping me from undoing the harness.

Ryan I didn't have any issues. If I remember there is a small tab you need to squeeze to disengage. Once you get the Sound bar free, it is pretty awkward. Two people help to remove and replace it for sure. Did you try to replace the speakers without removing the sound bar? I removed it so I could have a decent shot at filming it. It is too cramped to do the work and film, but I bet it wouldn't be too bad to leave it up. Good luck!

+Chris Conley, I measured the speakers which is where I got the 7" from. They are 7 inch diameter around the case. The part number from Mopar is 77kick10. Even with all that, I believe these are called 6.5" speakers. How they measure them officially, must be different from how any normal person with a ruler would measure them. Sorry about the confusion.

I just bought 14 jku it came with mud tires on it already. I was super excited since I wouldn't have to spend money buying them. But they are SUPER LOUD! At highway speeds you literally have to scream at the person next to you in order for them to hear you. Heck I was thinking I'm either going to have to get a helicopter headset, or new tires! lol, but maybe I'll try this idea instead.

I did not. My assumption and maybe it is wrong is that there is a 2way crossover filter and If I disconnected the tweeter I would just lose that range. I also thought that since the coaxial tweeter isn't going to get any thing after the jeeps filter, it wouldn't really be doing much. So I left the tweeter as factory. If I could remove the factory filter without messing up the front speakers, I would try that, because the kickers must have their own internal filter. I'm not an audio guy though.
