Steve, your explanation of "Korean Army Stew" is almost correct. But not quite. I happen to be a Korean-American and an 11 year veteran of the US Army who was stationed in Korea for a time. The true history of "Korean Army Stew" originates from the US Army's occupation of Korea during the Korean War in the 1950s. The American GI's brought over Spam, baked beans and hot dog links---items never found in Korea before. American GI's had an abundance of these items and would donate them to the Korean soldiers since Korea was under near famine status during the war. Koreans used these newly found ingredients and put them all together with vegetables that they found, a little gochujang, beef broth if they had some leftover....and there you have it! Korean Army Stew (aka budaejigae). Absolutely fabulous! My favorite dish in Korea. The dish I crave for whenever I go to Korea. "Nolboo Budaejigae" is my favorite Korean Army Stew restaurant chain in Korea. I wish there was one here in Los Angeles. Love your channel, Steve!

What people need to eat more of is yukgaejang. The broth is rich and deep in flavor, if they don't water it down to make it less spicy. And people should be introduced to jjolymyun, instead of just naengmyun.

Army stew was created for the U.S. soldiers stationed in Korea who were unfamiliar with Korean cuisine. The dish was designed to appeal to them by incorporating familiar ingredients like sausages and Spam, which successfully attracted the soldiers' interest.
@Amuroray77Ай бұрын
Wrong, it was created by Koreans who took those abundant ingredients from the US Army (Spam, Beans and etc)
