I can’t believe Steve hasn’t ever tried #19. This is one of the best things you MUST try when you visit, let alone live here! I thought it was expensive in 2008 when it was $17, but the pandemic drove up all the pricing… but even at its current cost, it’s worth it. Best pastrami on the planet is absolutely true. And Norm is super nice!

The prices definitely have soared over the last couple years. Three years ago it was $18. But if you want a plain pastrami you don't need to get a pastrami dip, just get a pastrami on rye. It was made like this 100 years ago in New York City before they started throwing it on French rolls in Los Angeles. Which is also good, don't get me wrong. But you're eating what came first at a Jewish deli like Langer's. Brent's in the Valley, Northridge great place as well though there I would get the black pastrami Reuben.
@curtismatsune31474 ай бұрын
I used to eat there on occasion back in the 80s. But it's now $27?!? With tax that's just shy of $30!! For one sandwich? Hard no. You can get TWO bigger, really good pastrami sandwiches AND a huge order of fries from The Hat for around $30.

The problem with this place, through no fault of their own, is the location. It is a Mecca for drug addicts and homeless. MacArthur park is right across the street. You don’t want to go there alone. One thing I do remember about that strip mall is back in the 70’s and early 80’s there was a Pioneer Chicken. I’d rather drive to Palm Springs to Sherman’s Deli. Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra and others of that era frequented Sherman’s. Love that place.

Thick-cut pastrami like Langer's is the way to go... If you want, really want, thin-cut go to Johnnie's in Culver City. Everywhere else does the thin-cut and then over-salts it or throwing it on the grill - making it taste like store-bought Boar's Head meat. This includes The Hat, Arry's, and all other diner pastrami.

Yeah it's a high price but it's the best version of that style of pastrami. So it's a once-in-a-while treat, rather than a frequent meal. Like occasionally going to a high end sushi place instead of the usual good-value sushi place. The Hat's a totally different style of pastrami and I like it, but Johnny's Pastrami is a better version of that style. Give it a try.
