Brompton Cemetery opened in 1840 and was originally known as the West of London and Westminster Cemetery. Brompton Cemetery is one of Britain's oldest and most distinguished garden cemeteries. Some 35,000 monuments, from simple headstones to substantial mausolea, mark the resting place of more than 205,000 burials at Brompton Cemetery.
Brompton Cemetery combines historic monuments, tranquil greenery and eclectic tales of the people buried in its beautiful landscape.
Brompton is one of the ‘Magnificent Seven’ cemeteries established in the 19th century. These large spaces were created outside central London to cope with the demands of a rapidly-growing population. In 1838 the architect Benjamin Baud won a competition to design the cemetery, and he created a neoclassical marvel of sweeping colonnades, symmetrical features and the crowning glory of a chapel rotunda.
