Any abandoned warehouse that gets discovered by skaters will indeed have halfpipes, rails, kickers..etc in due time. That's not fantasy. We had an empty school in my hometown after the new school was built and we had a full setup inside it in no time.

a lot of skate groups buy old warehouses and build a skatepark inside of them and keep a lot of the fittings they originally had as part of the aesthetic

In THPS4 on the PS2, there were plenty of ways to get out of bounds. Not only was there a "set custom restart" function in the pause menu, which if used at the right moment going down a street with level boundary, you could spawn outside the bounds and skate around in a small area that only existed to sell the illusion of a fuller city block. The online community also shared secrets like getting to "heaven" on the College level. There was one 90-degree corner of invisible walls that bounced you away from them, and if you positioned yourself just right you could bounce indefinitely off both walls slowly gaining height until you were skating on top of an invisible "ceiling" of the level. THPS3 had a famous "glitch" or perhaps dev function where if you press and hold Start on any level load screen during the few frames where the Neversoft eyeball stops spinning for the 3rd time, you load into the level with a free-roam camera. You can't play and IIRC you can't exit gracefully so you might need to restart the system to change levels, but it's a really neat look at forced perspectives and facades of distant props

I remember glitching out of the levels A LOT in THUG and THAW. It was super easy with the moon gravity and just jumping up the side of buildings. Whenever I do get around to those games, I have to check out those spots again.

Lovely video, I like your style! Our local skatepark was built in an old warehouse. So the first level being a warehouse rang so true to us in the cold north, only being able to skate outside for like 4 months a year XD Love these games. One of my fav series of all time. I recently did this by myself just jumping into THPS levels and exploring and paying attention to details !

It's really funny to see you point out the oddities in the level design. As a kid, I never paid any attention to these details and just enjoyed the game and it's clear that the level designers were more focused on making the levels fun and visually distinct, rather than any sort of adherence to strict realism.
@PretzelYT

It goes to show just how talented the level designers for these games were. It takes skill to know where to lean into realism and when to push it to the side for something that's just fun.

10:10 maybe that was the original location of the secret tape? it's kind of a hidden area and not too far from where the secret tape is in the final game, maybe they changed their minds and decided they'd rather have the secret tape for this level be challenging to reach and not just hidden

That weird butchered version of San Francisco. These games take place in the dream world with interpretations like that. But I get it, the style makes it more skate friendly than real life already is. If they wanted to make it realistic, it would be like from Driver and their San Francisco level. Or something from world's Scariest Police Chases. PS1 cities could get pretty realistic for the time if given the effort.

18:41 No PC port exists, but this game is playable on Dreamcast with higher resolution and improved draw distance. As the PC port of THPS2 only had Downhill Jam, Skate Park and Warehouse playable, all of the THPS1 levels are playable on the Xbox port of THPS2, and they look even better given the Xbox's hardware.

ok the one hoop makes total sense though. a lot of the pro skater maps give off the feeling of abondones locations so likely the only games going on there are pickup games, and at least in the south that’s typically played off of one hoop. a lot of the schools down here where guys will play pickup games on the weekend will only have a single hoop installed on the outside court because of that.

Regarding your comments about railings and water features in malls: in my local mall, there was a large 'pool' in the middle, shaped like a plus sign, with a fountain in the center under a skylight that had a 'sculpture' that literally looked like Pringles and olives hanging from the ceiling. There was no railing at any point, because it was basically a giant 'wishing well' that you could stand at the edge and throw coins in. It was weirdly pretty and... 'aesthetic' in a way. At some point they painted the tile a gross matte black, then drained it, then covered it with fake grass and now an always-standing Easter display. Don't know what they did with the Pringles though. Incidentally those Pringles cost upwards of $75,000 according to employees at the time.

Great timing, I've been replaying THPS 1 and 2 on PS1 in my spare time lately. I also love seeing the consequences of fun vs realism, I think about it a lot playing these games. You're right it's easy to get lost in some of the sprawling samey levels at first, but that eventual memory is part of the experience. Grand Theft Auto maps and Fallout 3/NV/4 are a similar thing.
@PretzelYT
@PretzelYT 9 ай бұрын
It's funny you bring up GTA, because i'm playing GTA 3 right now (for a video? who can say) and I've thought about that familiarity thing here too. It's always so daunting when starting an open world game because you have no idea where anything is. Especially for GTA 3 because there's no world map you can pull up. But sure enough, I've slowly built up that mental map of Liberty City. In a way, I kinda appreciate that it doesn't have a world map or map markers. Part of the fun is building up that map in my mind to the point where I can pretty much go on autopilot to any point in the city without having to think too hard. Plus the playspace is relatively small. If I was trying to build a mental map of GTA V from scratch, it would take an eternity. Los Santos is massive.
@JamieBainbridge

It's one of the things I look forward to most in open world games, or even any game with a large map like CRPGs. You start out unfamiliar and confused but over time you get to know the space. Eventually like you said, you can navigate to places without even thinking about it. You just know it. I also love how that knowledge sticks with you over time. It's been many years since I've played some games but I can jump right in and navigate my way around like I never left. I have to set a reminder in my phone to remember real life appointments, but I can jump back into Bad Blood (1990) and find all the secret locations instantly lol
