I was a technician at a IBM business partner in the 90's, and the code on top of the diskette box probably is the FRU number (field replaceable unit),the part number for mostly anything (HW parts,software,etc) you can order to perform a repair or an install of any given equipment.

12:20 Starter Editions of Windows would be great for baiting tech support scammers, especially if the license isn’t activated or is expired. It would be a lot of fun watching a scammer try to access it remotely and try to "fix" the license issue while barely being able to open many programs at once. Plus it would keep signing them out periodically if the trial license is expired.

Speaking of which, I wonder at this point how many copies and retail keys of Windows Michael has. To be a true Windows master, he must have at least a genuine retail product key for all of the following: Windows XP Professional Windows Vista Ultimate Windows 7 Ultimate Windows 8.1 Professional Windows 10 Professional I didn't count anything below XP because they're all free on WinWorld now, but boxed copies of them nets bonus points.

Old tech is my favorite! If I may share, some cool stuff from my own collection: - My Sega Dreamcast, honestly probably my favorite console design wise, it's a shame the PS2 dominated so much... - My DMG Play it Loud Game Boy, I got mine a few years ago at a retro games store and never have seen another DMG model Game Boy once... Good thing I bought it, because it's really cool! - My Game Boy Micro, probably Nintendo's worst performing handheld, it's quite uncommon and honestly pretty nice to play. My NES and SNES classic, I'm lucky I was able to get them both!

Here's a bit of a list of my cool, obscure, or rare old tech! Sega Saturn - So I collect SEGA consoles (just missing a 32X from their NA console lineup!) and this was a huge local find for me. Such a shame it flopped because the console itself is absolutely brilliant Sega Nomad - A handheld console i didn't know existed until a few years ago. It's a handheld Sega Genesis! What's not to love? Compaq Portable III - A bit of a rarity these days! I picked it up for $150 and after a good cleaning It's in almost full working order. Unfortunately the original 47MB HDD is dead, so I need to put a new hard drive in it. NEC MultiSpeed - This is a super cool laptop from 1986 I picked up for $50! The PC has a very interesting hardware layout - NEC V30 CPU with no hard drive. It has 2 DD FD drives, and a system disk in which it boots off of. When it loads up it turns some of its 640K of RAM into a RAM disk too! And not rare, but cool - my beloved 386 PC. My whole setup is the following: Intel 386-DX @ 25MHz, 8MB of RAM, Western Digital Caviar 85MB HDD, Oak Technologies OTI-37C (Unfortunately not an SVGA card, which I desperately need), a Soundblaster 16 with a real OPL3 chip and a Dreamblaster wavetable add-on, and other assorted things like a modem, a couple peripheral cards, and a controller card. It has MS-DOS 6.22 installed as well as Windows 3.1! Paired with the machine is a generic but great feeling AT keyboard, a generic serial ball mouse, and a Mitsubishi Diamond Scan 15VX CRT Monitor (it is absolutely LOVELY) that I picked up at a thrift store for $4! I also have some other rarities like a cartridge-based CD drive, an Iomega Jaz drive, a tape drive, and a couple other things!

I had cd case of Microsoft "Drive Time" discs that were internal training materials for Microsoft employees. They were designed to be played in your car like a book on tape so you could learn things while driving. The ones I had were basically how to downplay Linux to your customers, so mainly if your customer was thinking about implementing a Linux solution, you could counter that with the company approved talking points.

Lots of large companies had 'internal distribution' disks custom made back in the day. I have a full box of Verbatim 3.5" floppy disks with Tektronix logo labels and a box of 5.25" floppies, also with Tektronix branding - the 5.25" disks apparently have development code for one of the products in their old terminal family; at least that's what the (now retired) engineer who worked on the project told me when I got them while he was clearing out his desk.

Something that is a bit harder to come by, not rare but i suppose somewhat obscure is installation dvd's for Windows 7 Starter. A basic version like XP Starter, limitations & whatnot, not the best of versions like it. You'd only be able to get it preinstalled on lower end machines back when, and yeah can't find the DVD's for it much. Though a few years ago i saw a listing on eBay for what i read as 1 copy of 7 Starter, could get more if you chose a higher quantity, though there were 5 copies for sale. I misread it at the time, and when i received it, turned out to be 5 copies for each single purchase, so that was a nice surprise. Was $70 AUD or so when i bought them too. In the standard clear DVD case, and all 5 were sealed but opened one up to install it on a VM & for whenevev i'd mess about with it too, so still have the 4 sealed. Are the 32-bit version as 7 Starter was only offered in that, and these were only meant for sale in latin america as it mentions on the discs. Have aquired beta & whatnot physical versions of windows over the years, such as a few of Windows 2000 of the corporate preview program discs, some XP & Server 2003 evaluation discs along with XP Professional Beta 2 Build 2463 or 2462 it is. as well as this interesting 4-disc set of vista in a clear cube where the discs sit in it, has a fold out manual type of thing & the discs are of beta 1 build 5112, RC1 i think it was but don't remember the build & the RTM of Vista, and another pre-release build that i forget what it was, an interesting find it was too. Also got 2 sealed copies of NT 4.0 Terminal Server, with the floppy disks & the documentation that comes with them. Not a big box one, something more like an OEM thing i'd best describe it & 1 loose copy with just the CD, you don't see NT 4.0 Terminal Server pop up as much for sale. Those are some of my interesting software finds i've gotten over the years. Are a few more things i've found, that's just some of them.

@j.m.744 жыл бұрын
"This is a lava lamp." Close, but not quite... if you want to get technical, it's a glitter lamp. My mother has one nearly identical to this, but for 3 minor differences: 1) the plastic holographic "glitter" isn't in the shape of Windows XP letters, just ordinary small squares & circles. 2) In hers, the water is tinted light blue. 3) No Windows XP logo printed on the base. I really like that Motorola phone. Same keypad as their Razr line from some years back, and that slide feature to reveal a full keyboard for texting... just like my T-Mo (Alcatel) Sparq phone 😃

I have the iPhone slim box too, I got it when I bought a refurbished iPhone from ATT/Cingular in early 2008. It came shopped in a larger ATT box with custom cut out styrofoam to fit the phone box and other cut outs for the cable, charger and headphones that obviously don't fit into the slim box. I'd wager this slim box would be used for all refurbished iPhones.

Since you previously did the Windows 98 Indiana University Edition CD-ROM back in 2017 (even though it was the same as the retail copy of Windows 98), I'm still curious to see both the Windows 95 Indiana University CD-ROM as well as the Microsoft Office for Mac Indiana University CD-ROM just for fun (even if both the Windows 95 & Office for Mac CDs are the same as the retail copies like the Windows 98 one). Ah the Ubuntu 10.04 distro. I had one of those CD's, coolest thing was you could install the software as a directory on Windows without changing anything about the Windows OS. One small change was the new Windows boot menu, letting you pick which OS to start. Draw back of this method was the file system had to be FAT32, you could try NTFS, but several warnings about compatibility issues gave good clause to steer away from this option. If you chose Ubuntu you were reminded that you could install it permanently or keep your directory install (with implied limitations).

I actually came across an interesting piece of tech when I was shopping at Goodwill. It's a Sony Mavica FD75 digital camera that uses standard 3 1/2" floppy disks and it seems like it was made in early 2001 even before XP was released, so at the time, Windows ME would have been the latest and greatest operating system. Still works perfectly today.
